Flexibility and awesome human being/clubhouse guy
Erik

Is there a yet undiscovered metric out there which would show that the high value teams are placing on elite relievers is actually accurate? Or are we right to be a little skeptical of this from an analytic perspective, and teams are being irrational and overpaying?
august fagerstrom
12:46
I'm open to either stance.
JD
12:47
Do you think the Astros have enough farm system strength to make a competitive offer for Archer without including Bregman? Could a package around Reed/Martes and maybe Kyle Tucker be interesting to TB?
august fagerstrom
12:47
Without Bregman, no
Rafe
12:47
Does Edwin Diaz keep this up? He's quietly been Seattle's Betances.
august fagerstrom
12:47
Keep up a 41 K-BB%? No. He looks like a relief weapon of the future, though
12:48
And by future, I mean current and moving forward

August! Glad you're back. You know how to make a high quality low effort chile? Ancho peppers. They're big and weird looking, find em at your grocery store. Get some dry beans--they cost like 89 cents, soak those suckers before you go to work. Then when it's time to cook just throw in the ancho, onions, carrots, whatever you've got around, chop it up, boom (don't chop that ancho unless you want some spice attacks). Easy. Filling. Delicious.

I do now?!

12:48
What are you buying me with all that money you made? I am your best friend after all.
august fagerstrom
12:48
I will buy you 100 BORKPOINTS
12:49
redeemable at any BORKSTORE

Which team can rebuild quicker, the Angels or the Tigers?
august fagerstrom
12:50
Tigers, I think, because the Angels have, like, two assets, and one of them isn't going anywhere.
But I think it's a moot point because I don't see either rebuilding

I just looked at Tyler Naquin's advance defense metrics and they are not good. Is there a chance he improves or should the Indians cover their butts and pick up a CF at either the non-waiver or waiver deadline. I am nervous about a -10 DRS CF roaming the outfield come playoff time.
august fagerstrom
12:51
Yeah, that's weird. Funny thing about Naquin is, he was always a glove-first prospect. He hasn't looked great out there from what I've seen, but he certainly hasn't looked -10 DRS bad. I don't think they're in any rush to move him off the position

Was part of the reason the cubs were willing to pay such a premium to get chapman so they could set the value of the relief pitching market? Other teams will have a hard time affording elite bullpen arms just due to the huge prices, if they pay it they are handicapping future.
august fagerstrom
12:52
They wouldn't pay more than they're comfortable just so other teams would be forced to do the same
Erik
12:53
Are they Cubs acting the same as any team with their playoff odds/payroll/minor league system/etc. would act? Or are they acting differently due to their 108-year World Series drought? Do teams get demonstrably more "win now" the further they are from their last victory?
august fagerstrom
12:53
I think there's something to this line of thinking, but I doubt it changes much
Particularly because Theo isn't on a 108-year drought
Seanto
12:53
Why haven't the Rays traded Moore or Odorizzi to the Rangers for Profar?!
august fagerstrom
12:54
Because the Rangers don't want to give up Profar for a mid-rotation-at-best arm

Jose fernandez leads baseball in LD%... what?
august fagerstrom
I think Danny Salazar is experiencing a similar phenomena
12:55
Last I checked those two led baseball in highest average exit velocity allowed

12:56
with upton traded, does alex dickerson get more ABs? -- if so, what does he do with them?
august fagerstrom
12:56
That's what it sounds like

12:57
This David Dahl character was destroying the ball in the minors, and will now play in Colorado, but I seem to remember him playing in one of those minor league places where you assume video game numbers. Whatcha think?
august fagerstrom
12:58
He did indeed play in Alburqueue, which is basically the Coors of the minors
and the PCL, which is hitter-heaven in general
12:59
Even then, his numbers are insane, and were insane pre-Alburquerque, and he's long had prospect cred
Erik
12:59
Is it fair to say that teams generally overpay for rentals? That one player can't raise your world series odds by very much, and you're better off making sure you just get to the playoffs as often as possible?
august fagerstrom

Think your latter sentence is mostly true. That being said, Cubs are essentially already guaranteed a playoff berth. So then, you just want to make sure you have better WS odds, right?
1:01
I think there's also something to just *making* a move, in terms of the clubhouse. I know we're venturing into team chemistry analysis territory here, and not that it would justify an overpay, but there's got to be some kind of morale hit when a contending team is expecting a splashy addition and it doesn't come

After googling Ben Broussard to see what he's been up to, it appears that he is now a musician. His stuff is apparently on Spotify
