Okay, welcome to the Brewers chat. There's already a good pile of questions. Let's dive in.

With the huge number and potential value of the 18 arbitration cases, should we expect the Brewers to continue their downward trend?
Darragh McDonald
10:00
I don't know if a downward trend is a given, but the payroll is obviously going to be a factor.
10:01
Unless a big bump is coming, they only have about 10-15 mil to play with. Though some non-tenders could create some breathing room there.

Is it possible for Stearns to be "traded"? Could the Mets offer the Brewers a player or prospect to convince them to release Stearns from his contract? I don't know if this is even allowed under MLB rules, though manager and executive trades used to happen in the old days.
Darragh McDonald
10:02
This is an excellent question that I don't know the answer to. I've definitely seen manager trades, with John Farrell's trade from the Jays to the Red Sox being the one that jumps to mind.
But I don't know about executives.

What would Woodruff or Burnes cost the Jays?
Darragh McDonald
10:03
If the Hader trade is anything to go by, the Brewers would be looking for a mix of MLB-ready players and prospects.
10:04
What MLB-ready pieces could the Jays give up? Catching is the obvious one, which actually suits the Brewers well since they are losing Narvaez to free agency.
So, maybe Jansen and Orelvis for Woodruff could be a framework, though Burnes would cost more.

Corbin Burnes and Hunter Renfroe to Red Sox in a Marcelo Mayer package. Would you do that?
Darragh McDonald
10:06
I don't know how much trade value Renfroe has. He's a solid player, to be sure. But he'll be making around $11MM through arb. I'm not sure how much surplus value is there.

I see that the Brewers will be in on more pitching depth. Does that mean looking at signing like a Jordan Lyles who is pretty serviceable, or someone like Brett Anderson who is guaranteed to get a blister?
Darragh McDonald
10:07
The rotation is actually in decent shape at the moment, I think. They have a very strong front three and then three decent candidates for the backend.

What kind of deal from the Orioles for Burnes might the Brewers go for? DL Hall and Westburg? Or would Milwaukee insist on Grayson Rodriguez/Jackson Holliday? I don’t see the Brewers trading Burnes until next July at the earliest
Darragh McDonald
10:09
Yeah, I don't think a Burnes trade is imminent either. But then again, I didn't think Hader was going to be traded until it happened.

Brandon Woodruff is likely to be traded this off-season, in my opinion.  What should Brewers fans expect to receive in return?
Darragh McDonald
10:12
I don't know that a trade is a given. But if it happens, it should be something like the Hader trade but better.
Hader was making $11MM this year and had 1.5 years of control when traded.
10:13
Burnes and Woodruff will be in a similar situation this year, making about that much money and slated for free agency after 2024.
But as excellent starters, they should have more value than an excellent reliever.

Are the Brewers going to bring Esteury Ruiz up to the big league club? Ruiz was a top prospect with major potential and never got the chance in Milwaukee. Glad the Padres brought him up but hoping for the same with the Brew Crew.
Darragh McDonald
10:15
Yeah, I can see that. He killed it in Triple-A this year, not much left to prove there.
Unless there's a defensive concern.
10:16
But his speed should give him a decent floor even if there's some growing pains at the MLB level. He stole 85 bags in the minors in 2022.

In retrospect, did the Josh Hader trade doom the Brewers chances of finishing ahead of the Cardinals?  And why would the club accept Dinelson Lamet back as part of a package and then immediately let him go?
Darragh McDonald
10:16
Yeah, the Lamet thing was weird.
10:17
It could have been a financial thing. But I think Stearns said something about subsequent moves pushing Lamet out of the picture.
10:18
So, that could mean they wanted Lamet but then finished deals for Bush and Rosenthal and decided they didn't want Lamet anymore.

Is Freddy Peralta ready  to take the next step
Darragh McDonald
10:18
I think it's all about health/durability with him.
10:19
He was elite in 2021 but only got to 144 1/3 innings, which is still his highest.

Poll Time: Who’s more likely to get traded Christian Yelich, Brandon Woodruff, or Corbin Burnes.
Darragh McDonald
10:20
Well, Yelich won't get traded because of his contract. But I'll give you a poll on the other two.
Who is more likely to be traded?

Corbin Burnes (30.7% | 59 votes)

Brandon Woodruff (69.3% | 133 votes)

Total Votes: 192

What brought you to MLBTR?
Darragh McDonald
10:22
As a reader? I love MLBTR's deep dive on the off-field of stuff. Payroll, luxury tax, waiver rules, arbitration, etc. It helps explain why teams operate the way they do.

What is Willy Adames’ contract status?
Darragh McDonald
10:23
Adames is eligible for arbitration in 2023 and 2024, slated for free agency after that.
