I think they'll add a second baseman
They're aiming for the division title next year now -- there won't be too many "well let's hope these guys can rebound" spots in the Opening Day lineup next year.
John Mozeliak
3:23
Holland for 4yrs/48-50mil and JDM for 5yrs/85mil and last but not least Moustakas for 6yrs/100+mil
Steve Adams
3:24
JD Martinez will sign for $50MM more than that, and if you're giving Moose $100MM+ he'd sign on the dotted line today. I don't think that's an accurate assessment of their open-market values.
3:25
And I don't think you should be anticipating the Cards just signing three of the top 15 FAs and calling it a winter anyway. It's just not realistic to expect any one team to win three highly contested auctions -- which is all free agency is. An auction.

3:25
Are there any oft-injured starters that could be converted to shutdown relievers, a la Brandon Morrow?
Steve Adams
3:26
Mat Latos? Derek Holland? Tyson Ross?
Tayne
3:27
Where do Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela fall into the Rockies rotation plans next year? And how do you rate their future (mid-ro/back-end/RP?).
Steve Adams
3:27
Fourth and fifth slots at best? Which is about where I'd peg their long-term roles anyway. I'm not enormously bullish on either. Freeland is the better of the two for me.
WHO SAYS YES
3:28
how many Marlins will get trade this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:30
I think they could realistically move 4 players. If I were setting some kind of over/under on it, I'd put it at 3.5 and take the over I guess.
Allirow
3:30
Dee Gordon to the Jays?
Steve Adams
3:30
Jays, Angels, Mets, Brewers -- I could see any of those I think. Jays do want speed though, which Gordon obviously has in spades. And they can't really count on Devon Travis for much.
Joshua
3:31
Mozeliak said the bat would come via trade. Who are the top 3 targets?
Steve Adams
3:32
I've not seen a definitive quote from Mo saying "I'm going to trade for a bat," but I wouldn't expect him to state "We're going to sign a slugger!" on the record this offseason anyhow. JD Martinez's agents would sure love to hear him say that, though. Ha.

They'll talk to the Marlins about Ozuna and Stanton. They'll talk to the White Sox about Abreu. And they'll be serious players in the FA markets for JDM, Hosmer and Upton (if Upton opts out) as well.

Favorite Halloween candy?
Steve Adams
3:32
I don't really eat a lot of candy. Snickers or Reeses PB Cups, I suppose.

Is Dusty done being a manager? He's too good to never get a ring. It's too bad that everything he touches in one way or another falls apart.
Steve Adams
3:33
I don't think he's going to land on the Yankees, so he might have to wait another year to try again. I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of him landing somewhere for a couple of years.
AJ Schied
3:34
Is Michael Pineda a decent "buy low" FA coming off TJ surgery, similar to Eovaldi and the Rays deal last season?
Steve Adams
3:35
Yeah -- he might not pitch at all in 2018, but if you sign him for two years and backload the salary into the second season I love the pickup. And I think the Rays are a reasonable candidate to do so. They engineered similar deals not only for Eovaldi but also Wilson Ramos. They even did two-year minor league deals with Jonny Venters and Neil Wagner (though those didn't really pan out)

3:35
Tim wrote a great piece about the White Sox offseason outlook and mentioned their need to try to acquire short-term vets that could turn into potentially valuable trade chip at the deadline. Would a guy like Jose Bautista fit that bill for them (especially considering their fluid OF/DH situation)?
Steve Adams
3:36
Sure they could roll the dice on Joey Bats. But there'll be a lot of players that fit that mold. The corner OF/1B market is going to have far more supply than demand once again. The Sox will almost certainly just wait it out and scoop someone up on a bargain deal later in the offseason.

What's going to happen with Matt Albers next year?
Steve Adams
3:37
He'll sign a one- or two-year free agent deal -- probably with someone other than the Nationals.
JP
3:37
Why wouldn’t the Cubs try to bring back Wade Davis?
Steve Adams
3:38
They just haven't really shown an inclination to pay top-of-the-market prices for relief pitching in the past. I don't think they'll change that this winter. They didn't even make a serious play for Jansen last offseason. I think they'll add one or two pieces from the second tier this winter (Addison Reed, et al) and also shuffle the composition by non-tendering or trading Hector Rondon and bringing in some other relief arms in trades.
GO MARINERS
3:39
Shohei Otani?
Steve Adams
3:40
Another weekly chat installment! There's really no good way to know where he's going to sign, and I wouldn't characterize any team as more likely than another for the most part. Generally speaking, I think he'll sign with an AL team so he can DH some, but I don't even have as strong of feelings about that as I did a couple months ago
Tayne
3:41
Is Jacob Faria as good as his stats showed this season?  He was sneaky good.
Steve Adams
3:41
I'm on board with him as a solid mid-rotation arm for the Rays for the foreseeable future, yeah.
Have to take a phone call -- one second, sorry. Will be quick
3:43
OK
Apologies on that
Concerned White Sox
3:44
Do you think Kopech starts the year in the White Sox rotation?
Steve Adams
3:44
He's barely pitched in AAA and they have no reason to start his service clock. Nope.
Guy Smiley
3:44
Which team's contention window is most in danger of closing first?
Steve Adams
3:46
If I can say the Royals, I'll go with them, but their window may already be closed. Orioles and Blue Jays are certainly on the brink, and the D-backs aren't exactly poised for long-term success (though I think they've got a better chance in 2018 than Baltimore).

3:46
If the Braves ask the Royals again for Dayton Moore what level of player should the Royals request in trade?  Maitan?  Acuna?  Gohara?
Steve Adams
3:46
I can't imagine Atlanta seriously entertaining that level of compensation -- or even close to it.
