Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/8/19

Steve Adams
3:42
Greetings! I'll get this started in a couple minutes but feel free to start asking questions right away
Machado
3:43
He doesn't have enough pull to get Showalter hired does he?
Steve Adams
3:45
Not on his own, of course not. But Showalter and Padres GM A.J. Preller know each other a bit from their brief work together in Texas, and it always seemed likely to me that they'd look at someone with some experience after going to rookie route with Green. Showalter will probably be one of many in that mix.

3:45
Do you think the Brewers sign Gio again? He did pretty well aside from injury.
Steve Adams
3:47
He was generally fine, but I think after consecutive seasons with so many questions surrounding their rotation depth, the Brewers should consider aiming higher and adding someone they'll trust for more than 5 innings. They didn't re-sign last year's bargain lefty (Miley), either, though that probably doesn't have tons of bearing on the Gio decision.
Jose Quintana
3:47
Is there any chance the cubs don’t pick up my option?
Steve Adams
3:49
It's a net $9.5MM decision -- I'll be stunned if they don't pick it up. Quintana's ERA spiked, but that was due largely to what was probably a fluky drop in his strand rate. His K/BB numbers remained good, ground-ball rate was solid, HR rate didn't spike even in the year of the juiced ball. It's a pretty easy call to me.

is today a must win for the Astros so they won’t have to pitch Cole on Thursday?
Steve Adams
3:50
I don't really buy into that narrative, no
Hmm..
3:50
If Chapman opts out, what kind of deal could he be looking at?
Steve Adams
3:53
I don't think he'll get another five-year deal, and at 32 this February he might not find four. But another three years and a push for a record annual value for a reliever ($17.5MM), or close to it, I can see.

So maybe he's looking at 3/53 or so. If the three- or four-year term he'll probably seek isn't there early in the winter, he might still be able to find like 2/36 or something later in the winter, which would give him the record and top the 30 he still has left
Gerrit Cole
3:53
I will be wearing a Giants uniform next year. My brother-in-law convinced me its a great club to play for.
Steve Adams
3:54
I can't fathom the Giants being serious players for Cole. Sorry Brandon Crawford. You'll just have to see him at Thanksgiving.
Well -- shouldn't say "can't fathom." They certainly have the funds if Larry Baer and ownership want to lead the charge. But that move does not strike me as something Zaidi will push for.

Tanner roark to the orioles 2 years 24 mil
Steve Adams
3:55
Seems more like a move the old regime would've made. I don't think Roark gets to that level in free agency, nor do I think the Orioles will spend that much on a starter
Eric
3:55
Will this finally be the year the Twins look to add a legit starter?
Steve Adams
3:57
I mean, they offered Darvish over $100MM two winters ago. Not like they haven't tried.

But yeah, look around the lineup and there aren't going to be tons of spots they're looking for upgrades, especially not since I'm sure they now see Arraez as their regular 2B and Garver as their main catcher. So, adding in the rotation and bullpen certainly makes sense.

Tough to see them winning a bidding war for Cole, but there are second-tier arms I'm sure they'll pursue, and the trade market always presents some interesting candidates. (Go get Jon Gray, someone)

Will I be coming home and possibly playing for the Marlins next season?
Steve Adams
4:00
They seem more likely to add bargain relievers than starters. They have quite a few internal rotation options in Smith, Alcantara, Lopez, Yamamoto and others. There's certainly room to add a veteran type if they like, but the 'pen and some veteran bats look more likely to me.

4:00
Chances that Strasburg actually opts out?
Steve Adams
4:02
I find it a lot more likely than I have at any point through the first three years of his deal. I'm leaning in favor of him doing it -- or at least of the Nats just tacking a year on to keep him from doing so.

Others on the MLBTR staff are less convinced. We'll be debating it heavily this week and next.

5/$100m for Wheeler?
Steve Adams
4:02
I'll take the under on the years and the annual value there.
Damn Twins
4:02
Is CJ Cron back with the Twins next year, or does the club pass on his option?
Steve Adams
4:04
It's not an option; they'd have to tender him a contract and give him a raise on this year's $4.8MM salary. Cron isn't a great defender, barely kept his OBP over .300 and was a legitimately bad hitter against RHP (.225/.281/.404). I think they'll look for an upgrade at the position.
Nats
4:04
Will Smith to the Nats? 3yrs 21 mil?
Steve Adams
4:05
I'm sure the Nats will target him, but he should trounce that contract. I'll be surprised if he doesn't top 3/30 and I can see him being the only reliever to land a four-year deal next winter, too.
Mookie Betts
4:06
Do I really get traded this off-season or do I and the team find a compromise on a new long term deal?
Steve Adams
4:06
He's been pretty clear that he intends to explore free agency. I'm not 100% convinced he'll be moved this winter, but the new GM will absolutely explore it.
Aaron Bogota
4:06
Should the A's trade Chapmán and Olson for a slew of talent?
Steve Adams
4:07
No. No they should not.
I was trying to come up with a sufficiently stunned reply to that even being a question, but we'll just keep it matter of fact, ha.
Adam Steves
4:09
Early thoughts on what Grandal's deal could look like? Any chance on a return to MKE?
Steve Adams
4:09
I'm in the 3/60 range
AZ Ranger
4:10
Which player gets traded this offseason: Mazara or Choo?
Steve Adams
4:11
Choo's contract would be difficult to move, even with only one year left, and he has full no-trade rights
Some teams would probably still be happy to buy low on Mazara given his age and pedigree, but he just hasn't been a very good hitter to this point in his career.
Huh?
4:11
Roark won’t get 2/$24? How many starters are out there that can get you 170-180 OKish innings?
Steve Adams
4:12
He's 33 with a pretty limited ceiling. That set of qualifications didn't really serve Gio Gonzalez too well last year.
