Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 12/29/20

Steve Adams

Happy final chat of 2020! If only we had something to talk about.
Cubs
2:01
Seems they just gave away Darvish. Also are Cubs in rebuild now.
Steve Adams
2:03
They pretty much did. They're a worse team now with Davies than with Darvish and Caratini, and no one else they acquired will help them before 2023. This team won the division and went to the playoffs -- and despite the fact that no one else in the NL Central is trying, the Cubs are content to just deliberately get worse. I'd be furious if I were a Cubs fan.

Did the prospect package the Jays have to give up for Lindor just get seriously recalibrated by the Cubs?
Steve Adams
2:05
Darvish and Lindor are completely different players with different contracts. I saw some reporters trying to link the two returns, but I don't think the two are comparable in that sense. Nor should they be.

Do the Reds reverse course now since nobody in the NL Central seems to be going for it? A SS and a few relievers and they could walk away with that division
Steve Adams
2:07
I've been critical of the Reds but also open that I'd give them their due if it turns out that was the gambit all along: cut costs in the 'pen because relievers will be a dime a dozen late in the offseason, then reallocate those dollars to a more clear position of need.

They should do that, but I'm not convinced that they actually will. They passed on getting aggressive for Ha-Seong Kim when it seems they could've had him for something like four years and $28MM. Maybe they just don't think he's an everyday shortstop and prefer Didi, Semien, etc. -- but that was a pretty reasonable price to pay to fill a glaring need.

Seems like the trade market is red hot right now! Who all will the Pirates trade? I assume Musgrove and Frazier but anyone else in your opinion?
Steve Adams
2:08
I don't see a huge market for Frazier. There are tons of 2B alternatives out there, and he's coming off a poor season. I could see the Pirates trading any of Steven Brault, Chad Kuhl or Richard Rodriguez.
2:09
Rays and Padres have officially announced the Snell trade.

2:09
Seems like the Mets are an innocent bystander in all this. Any clue as to their mindset?
Steve Adams
2:09
I'd imagine they're waiting on Springer to make some decisions, first and foremost.

2:10
Sense the padres got snell snd darvish does that mean the dodgers should push for bauer
Steve Adams
2:11
The Dodgers aren't going to get reactionary like that. I'm sure they'd love Bauer on a creative, short-term deal. If he's still set on taking a one-year pact, the Dodgers would be my pick to sign him. If he wants 5+ years, I'd probably pick the Angels, Jays or Mets as likelier to go that route.
2:12
Stove remains LIT. Twins signing Hansel Robles, per Dan Hayes of The Athletic.
I'd assume that's a minor league deal but could be a low-cost Major League pact based on how good he was in '19

Do you think Didi would sign a 2 year 16M deal with Reds?
Steve Adams
2:13
He played last year on a one-year, $14MM deal looking to bounce back from injury. He did just that. He's not signing for 2/16 this winter. He'd take a one-year deal before taking that kind of AAV cut.
Major League deal for Robles in Minnesota.

Richards 1/$7 and JTR 6/$125 should make Angel fans happy right?
Steve Adams
2:14
If Garrett Richards is the only notable rotation piece the Angels add this winter, I don't think Angels fans should be happy, no. And I think he'll cost more than 1/7.

Why not trade Carrasco and keep Lindor for one more year?
Steve Adams
2:14
Why is it an either-or proposition? I won't be surprised if Cleveland trades both.

Can you remember a time when a team got not one but *two* elite SP's within 24 hours of each other? And, what other moves do the Padres need to make to be the best they can be?
Steve Adams
2:15
Closest thing I can recall to the Snell/Darvish grab is the Brewers getting Yelich and Cain on the same day. Different positions, but similar vibe.
Padres could still use some help in the bullpen.

What's going on with the Yankees?  They seem to be pretty quiet...
Steve Adams
2:16
They're not doing anything until they know:

1) If they can re-sign DJ LeMahieu and
2) What that will cost, if so.

I am trying to be patient but why are things moving so slowly? I heard the reasoning was it’s because “It’s the holidays” but other teams same to be active (Padres).
Steve Adams
2:18
The free-agent market tends to move slower. Owners don't know how much they want to spend because they still don't know what 2021's schedule and attendance will look like. The few teams that ARE spending are all interested in the same group of top free agents, and that overlap leads to a lot of staring contests as well.

Hi Steve, what's left for The Padres to do? I say Trade Myers w Luccessi and get a young corner OF. Any landing spots for Wil? If they move Wil, do you think Bauer or Sugano us still in play?
Steve Adams
2:19
I don't see why a team with a young OF who is an upgrade over Myers would be swayed to give up said OF in exchange for Myers at $22MM and Luchessi, who is probably viewed as a fifth starter at best right now.

does kevin pillar make sense in cf to take pressure of mccutchen?
Steve Adams
2:20
Pillar isn't a great center fielder anymore. You could platoon him with Haseley, I guess, but you could also just use Kingery in that role and get a better player than Pillar, who has never been able to get on base much and who really isn't that exciting if he's no longer an elite (or even above-average) defender in CF.

The Padres have won the offseason so far, does it get them past the Dodgers though?
Steve Adams
2:21
No way to judge that until the offseason is over. Not like the Dodgers are going to stand pat.

What would the return for German Marquez look like from the Mariners? Is he worth more than Luis Castillo?
Steve Adams
2:22
Marquez has an extra year of team control over Castillo, so he should cost more. I think the Mariners are going to keep running into the problem that any club pitching a controllable, high-end starter is going to ask that Jarred Kelenic or Julio Rodriguez be in the deal.
Dennis
2:23
What are the Cubs plans for CF?
Steve Adams
2:24
Based on their actions over the past three offseasons, I'd imagine they'll fill it as cheaply as possible -- either in-house or signing someone like Jake Marisnick, Delino DeShields, etc. for a million bucks.
