Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 3/22/22

Steve Adams
2:07
Greetings all! Believe this is my first post-lockout chat, as we were too buried in the free-agent deluge last week to get many of these on the site! It's been a crazy week-plus, and actual real-life baseball is being played while teams sign and trade players. What a time to be alive.
Let's chat.

I'll start off the Jose Ramirez Trade Scenario's
Steve Adams
2:09
They will be fascinating to consider, next winter, when he's actually somewhat likely to move.
This spring? I don't see it.
Adams Steve
2:09
White Sox and Conforto are a natural fit. They need a RF and left-handed bat.
Steve Adams
2:10
I generally agree with this, especially if Adam Engel is banged up. But they're also already in record payroll territory and trying to dump Kimbrel's salary.
Josh B
2:10
Is Wilson Contrares still a Cub in August?
Steve Adams
2:11
I'll bet against it, but if the QO system remains in place (i.e. there's no international draft agreement by July 25), I'd call it a bit more likely.
Twins Fan
2:11
Will the Twins actually give what it takes to get quality starting pitchers (i.e. Montas and/or Manaea)?
Steve Adams
2:12
After stunning baseball by landing Correa, yeah, I don't see why or how they can take their foot off the gas now. Doesn't necessarily NEED to be Manaea or Montas -- they're just the most obviously available names. But I would imagine the Twins are looking into trade possibilities with the Padres, Orioles, D-backs, Marlins and just about any team with some potentially available arms.

Anyway I can get Meadows without giving up abrams or hassel?
Steve Adams
2:13
Meadows shouldn't cost anywhere near either of those two prospects.
Reds
2:13
What in the world are we doing? Besides having an owner that is running us into the ground (Castellanos, Mileys comments confirm)
Steve Adams
2:14
Getting worse to try to save money. That's really about the bottom line of it all. They're not rebuilding, they're not aggressively trying to win. It's been a terrible couple of offseasons for Reds fans. There's no real way to sugarcoat it.
White Sox Trade
2:14
Kimbrel, Engel and 6million to Phillies for Stott, who says no?
Steve Adams
2:14
Phillies. Easily.
Snowballing here

Phillies worst defense ever?
Steve Adams
2:16
They've been the worst defensive team in baseball for several years now. It's nothing new, but I find it fascinating that they're going over the luxury tax to sign Schwarber and Castellanos to a combined $39.75MM AAV when there were so many ways to both deepen the lineup AND improve the defense if they were actually willing to exceed the tax for the first time.

Thoughts on the Giants offseason?
Steve Adams
2:19
Love the Rodon signing, risky as it is, and think they've done a generally good job of building out an entire rotation without taking on any real long-term risk. It's pretty clear they're just philosophically opposed to long-term deals for anyone other than elite talents -- remember, they pursued Bryce Harper in free agency -- and I think this front office is generally more cautious than my own personal preference (at least, you know, when playing fake GM with a billionaire's money from the comfort of my home office, ha).

I'd have liked to see them take on a bit more risk in some mid-range deals to boost the offense, but hey, the Farhan/Harris tandem and their staff have made it work so far and have earned the benefit of the doubt.

Will the Guardians EVER make a free agent move?
Steve Adams
2:20
Tommy Pham is still there for the taking!
Philly A's
2:21
Jays extend Chapman for 2 years, $25M,  did the A's just put blinders on and sold him tonmove on?
Steve Adams
2:21
They didn't really extend him... they just bought out his remaining two arbitration years. The Jays aren't getting any extra control over him, they're just establishing cost-certainty right now.
Ark Angel
2:22
Do you think the Angels are more likely to acquire another starting pitcher by trade (Montas/Manaea?), by free agency (Archer/Cueto?) or not at all?
Steve Adams
2:24
At this point, while I wouldn't be shocked to see them get another SP or anything, I feel it's likelier they're done. I'd imagine other teams with clearer SP needs can and will outbid them for the A's guys. They could sign a Chris Archer type, sure, but if you're Archer I would imagine you prefer somewhere that doesn't already have a projected six-man rotation, plus a near-MLB-ready top prospect (Reid Detmers) and a bunch of other depth options in front of you.
Tinker to Evers to Chance
2:26
Don't the Cubs need another starter or two? Are they just going to fill innings with more low rent free agents?  The Owners obviously have money if they are looking to buy Chelsea,  they just don't want to spend it on the Cubs.  Scrubs.
Steve Adams
2:28
Most teams could use another SP or two. The Cubs, for the first time in the past few years, at least went out and acted like the big-market team they are -- to some extent. I like the Suzuki and Stroman deals a lot, and getting a free Miley from Cincinnati was a nice gift to begin the offseason.

Their other pitching additions may not be sexy, but it's been clear even amid the Stroman/Suzuki deals that they're not quite makin an all-in push in '22.
I thought the Smyly deal was a perfectly sensible low-cost pickup

Manaea for Kirillof?
Steve Adams
2:28
Twins aren't giving Kirilloff for one year of Manaea
2:29
I doubt they'd give him up for two years of Montas, either.

2:29
Might the Mets go into the season without a LHP? And is that inadvisable or just very rare?
Steve Adams
2:30
I think guys like Shreve and Claudio have decent chances of cracking the bullpen
It's rare to see a no-lefty pitching staff but not unheard of. Hell, the Astros had an all-righty staff in the playoffs not long ago.

Isnt it funny Story took less money than Bryant AND has to play a position he's never played before
Steve Adams
2:32
I don't know of too many people who thought Story would earn MORE than Bryant, and him moving to 2B is probably a one-year thing until Bogaerts opts out and Story takes over at SS in Boston for the foreseeable future.
Cards
2:33
Are we going to get any pitching insurance soon? Why no chatter about Cards getting another SP?
Steve Adams
2:35
There's not that much in terms of quality arms left out there. I could see J.A. Happ coming back, but they'd already added some decent depth options. Drew VerHagen was a starter during his time in Japan. Aaron Brooks had a good run as a starter in the KBO. Woodford, Johan Oviedo, TJ Zeuch all in house already. They just claimed Packy Naughton.

It's maybe not the most exciting group of names, but even without Flaherty the Cardinals can start the season with Adam Wainwright, Steven Matz, Dakota Hudson, Miles Mikolas and one of the other names I just mentioned. It's not a terrible group -- especially not with the team's defense.
