[Insert witty opening line to chat]
3:18
Now that my razor-sharp wit and creativity has sufficiently lightened the mood, let us commence this chat of all things baseball. (Or really whatever we wanna talk about)
J Up

Angels probably won’t make playoff. So do I stay or opt out?
Steve Adams
3:18
I think he either opts out, or the Halos just tack another year and $25-30MM onto his deal. Even with the reduced market for corner bats, he's been a monster since last July and should clear 4/88 in free agency.
Bryce
3:19
Cubs' chances of resigning Davis in the off-season? Who's the closer if not him?
Steve Adams
3:21
I doubt they'll beat the market for him. Cubs weren't really huge players in the market for top closers last offseason and I don't envision much of a departure from the norm. They can try to orchestrate a similar trade (totally speculative, but if Britton is made available and they're convinced he's healthy, he fits the bill) or look at the next tier of relievers.

Pursuing a trade for a big relief arm with some team control left would be plenty logical as well. There are lots of options, but I don't expect it to be Wade Davis or Greg Holland.

chance of Otani taking 300,000 from teams in the penalty box?
Steve Adams
3:22
Probably not great, but let's be honest here -- we're pretty much all expecting some means of circumventing the bonus limitations, so if a team in the penalty comes up with the most compelling pitch, I guess we shouldn't totally rule it out. But I still think he goes to an AL team with money to spend -- assuming he is indeed posted.

Bryce is back. Bryce is back.
Steve Adams
3:22
Bryce is back, tell a friend.

I'm speaking about Aaron Judge because he's not comfortable doing it: Is this monster the AL MVP? Yanks are nowhere without him and still "rebuilding".
Steve Adams
3:25
It's probably him or Altuve -- depends how heavily the voters want to penalize him for not being as consistent as Altuve and how much the recency bias of Judge absolutely laying waste to MLB pitchers over the final few weeks impacts their perception.

Also, it sounds kind of silly to say, but if Altuve misses 5 of the final 6 games or something after getting plunked yesterday, it's close enough that even a short absence could impact the final decision.
3:26
At any rate, yes, Judge should be firmly in the MVP mix, and I wouldn't begrudge one for feeling it's him or for feeling it's Altuve. They're damn close. The only thing that will strike me as silly is when someone tries to make a case that one "BLATANTLY" is more deserving. There's no runaway winner here.

Seeing how Toronto went after Fowler last year do you see them looking at Cain?
Steve Adams
3:27
I can see them kicking around the market, but I don't think outfield will be perceived as such a great need this winter now that they've traded for Teoscar Hernandez and have Alford on the cusp of MLB readiness.
Tom
3:27
Mets eyeing up Holland and Davis or a tier below them in the bullpen market?
Steve Adams
3:27
From my vantage point, they have far too many needs to make such a heavy investment in one single reliever.
St Louis
3:28
Last year we focused on greeting "more athletic"  wouldn't trading carpenter and using some of our younger players do just that.  Maybe get a front line starter for carpenter and others
Steve Adams
3:29
You make getting a front-line starter sound like it's easy. Carpenter isn't bringing one to St. Louis -- especially not as the centerpiece of a deal. Even if he's included, other teams are still going to ask about the Alex Reyes and Jack Flahertys of the organization.
Trout
3:29
I deserve MVP?
Steve Adams
3:30
On a per-game basis, you're probably still the most valuable in the league. Unfortunately, missing 50ish games when Aaron Judge is having a historically good rookie season and Jose Altuve is, well, being Jose Altuve, doesn't have Trout in the mix for me.

(Good thing for Trout that I don't have a vote! But I think most voters will agree)
Harper
3:30
Can/Will I still win MVP?
Steve Adams
3:30
Same situation as Trout as far as I'm concerned.
Monty
3:31
Assuming Arietta leaves, who are Cubs SP free agent targets this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:32
As is the case with the 'pen, I think they'll look more at second-tier starters (Lance Lynn, Alex Cobb, etc.) and try to trade for a more notable arm. Maybe they can work something out with Jake, though, if he's willing to do five years instead of chasing six. Believe previous reports have pegged the Cubs at willing to go four years, so perhaps the gap isn't insurmountable.

Does Carter Capps have a better chance at returning to his old form next year than matt Harvey did?
Steve Adams
3:33
Capps has a ton working against him with his oddball delivery in the first place, and he had TJ and TOS even closer together than did Harvey. I don't think the odds are in his favor.

Have the Braves quietly had one of the best catching tandems in baseball? Flowers and Suzuki raked this year and the Braves have them for under 8 million. Are both bargains?
Steve Adams
3:34
They have indeed, although I don't know how quiet it's been. I suppose because I spend half my waking life reading about baseball online, discussing baseball with others, etc. I'm more apt to see praise for guys that fly under the radar of the more generalized national media, but I've seen my fair share of praise for that duo and given them some love myself. It's been a really, really nice pairing in ATL.

Brad Hand.  Where does he end up to start 2018?
Steve Adams
3:36
I've probably said this before, but the most realistic answer is that there's no great way to know. It's weak, but there are going to be 20+ teams calling the Padres about him this offseason. Just as picking the destinations of relievers in our yearly Free Agent Prediction contest is even more of a total crapshoot than starters/position players, you may as well put a blindfold on and throw a dart at a list of 15-20 teams that need bullpen help and have even an average farm system.
The Boat
3:36
Few teams need a SS.  Would StL consider a move like signing Cozart (a bargain at the 3/36 I keep hearing bandied about) and trading away from their already-crowded infield (and outfield) to buy RP/ bolster the farm?
Steve Adams
3:38
I don't mind the notion. I think they'll certainly be open to moving Aledmys this winter (Hey there, Padres!), and they could always slide DeJong over to 3B and continue to bounce Gyorko all over the diamond. Cozart would certainly enhance their defense, and at a certain price point, it just makes sense for teams without obvious shortstop needs to shuffle their internal options to get Cozart into their infield mix.

Adding value is adding value.

Best Contract of the year?
Steve Adams
3:39
I'm working on a list of the best minor league signings of the year. He's toward the top along with Yusmeiro Petit, but I quite honestly cannot recall the order, and it's probably changed a bit in the couple of days since I looked at it. I figure I'll run it once the regular season is over.

3:39
What ever happened to Kelly Johnson?
Steve Adams
3:40
To my knowledge, he held out for a MLB deal that never materialized last winter. At a certain point, some veteran guys don't relish the idea of fighting for a job in Spring Training when the lack of certainty comes at the cost of spending time with their often young families. Not sure what his exact reasoning was, but he never seemed anxious to take a minors deal

Who do you think gets a QO?
Steve Adams
3:41
This is primarily off the top of my head so I assure you I'm going to miss someone, but....
3:43
Hosmer, Cozart, Moustakas, Cain, Arrieta, Cobb, Lynn, Wade Davis, Greg Holland. Tanaka if he opts out.

MAYBE Carlos Santana, LoMo.
