Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/5/17

Mike Napoli

Will the Rangers pick up my 2018 option?
Steve Adams
4:15
I can't really see how they'd justify $11MM+ on Napoli next year given the way he's hit in 2017. Power is still there but strikeouts and infield flies are at an all-time high
4:16
38% of Nap's plate appearances have resulted in a K or pop-up to the infield. That's just so many wasted PAs
pizza
4:16
Deep dish or thin crust?
Steve Adams
4:17
I'm a NY-style slice kind of guy, but I'd rather have Chicago deep dish than a really thin, crunchy, flaky crust any day
Mariners announce that they're bringing Jacob Hannemann right to the Majors
Vogelbach also up

Do you think the Rays shop Archer this offseason?
Steve Adams
4:18
I don't see why they would. They might have the best pitching contract in baseball right there, and they're fringe contenders this year. I expect them to make another run at contending, and trading Archer almost certainly won't help that.

What happened to Brett Lawrie? Is he still trying to play?
Steve Adams
4:19
Said he wasn't going to sign until he was fully healed up. Perhaps that didn't happen this year? I haven't heard anything to suggest he's retiring, so I'd bet he'll be looking for a minor league deal this winter
Tigers
4:19
Not sure Detroit will win another game this year.
Steve Adams
4:19
BOLD PREDICTION: They will win at least one.

4:20
Favorite Cookie: Chocolate Chip, Snickerdoodle, or Carrasco?
Steve Adams
4:20
I enjoyed this question. Carlos Carrasco is awesome, but I'd still take a fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip
Baby Bears' Rotation
4:21
Who do you see the Cubs going for to replace Arrieta and (probably) Lackey? Thanks.
Steve Adams
4:23
They have the money to get Arrieta or Darvish if they're so inclined, but they never really seemed willing to pay Arrieta beyond four years. If they're going to be averse to long-term deals for pitching (which seems like a fine general rule to have) then there are still some useful arms in the second tier. Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn, Marco Estrada, etc.
Dbacks
4:23
Any chance we can find a team that will take Yasmany Tomas if we eat a portion of his contract?
Steve Adams
4:23
If by "a portion" you mean "80 to 90 percent," then maybe some AL club will try him at DH sure.

Say the Reds hadn't been hit with mounds of pitcher injuries and DiSclafani, Finnegan, and Feldman all stayed healthy. With that offense, how close would they have been to contending?
Steve Adams
4:25
They'd be better but not close to contending. I don't think any of that group is much more than a mid-rotation arm. DeSclafani is probably the best of the bunch, but they still wouldn't have had enough quality pitching.
Tanaka
4:25
should i opt out
Steve Adams
4:26
Yup. He's been really good since late May, and even when he was struggling it was all homer-related; the Ks, BBs, grounders always were there. I think there will be some concerns about his penchant for serving up homers, but he can still do better than $67MM on the open market, even if it comes by taking a lower average annual value.
Blue Jays
4:26
Why didn't they trade Estrada and Happ when they were claimed? I know Rogers needs content for their cable enterprise but the product is due for a retooling, don't you think?
Steve Adams
4:27
They were 2.5 games out of the Wild Card when Estrada was claimed, and the Yankees claimed him more as a means of blocking others than actually trying to trade for him.

They want to contend next season, and Happ helps them in that regard.
Grichuk
4:27
Me to SF in off-season trade for Strickland straight up??
Steve Adams
4:28
I'd rather have Grichuk, but if the Giants toss something else into the mix, I don't mind the framework I suppose.
Sam
4:28
White Sox bring up Kopech in 2017?
Steve Adams
4:29
Nah. He's already up 60 innings over last year's total, and he's only thrown 15 innings in AAA. I think they'll call this year a success and start him in AAA next year.
4:31
Ok, I have to wrap up for the week. Jason's chatting tomorrow night at 6:30 CT, Jeff on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 CT. I'm on Twitter if you'd like to ask further questions (@Adams_Steve). Thank for chatting everyone!
