No, there could be a delayed call, and Edmonton kept the puck. I just found it a bit odd that Jake Guentzel did something penalty-worth at all, let alone two times in the same sequence.

Do you think the Pens need to add a blue liner if so what type TWF, DFD, Off? Ty
Jason Mackey

I just finished a conversation with Mt. Lebanon's Matt Bartkowski here in Calgary. Honestly, someone like him. Simple game. Physical. Fun in the room. Steady. Won't embarrass himself. Put it this way: I don't want Zach Trotman or Frank Corrado playing playoff games. I'd be OK if I had Bartkowski out there.

Caught your interview on Stan Savran's show the other day - very informative and entertaining. Two questions: Does the station pay you and/or the P-G for your appearance, or is it just sort of an even trade - they get a guest and you get publicity for the P-G? (maybe that's a question you're not really at liberty to answer). Also, do you have a list/schedule of your radio appearances that you can share?
Jason Mackey
1:29
Thanks, Hollywood. I don't have a schedule, and I don't mind talking about it. Radio stations do not pay. Occasionally they will toss us perks. WDVE, for instance, got me Phish tickets when they came to town. The Fan has sent gift cards for restaurants. All very much appreciated. I did previously have a conversation with iHeart when I was at the Trib. Lost it when I went to DK/Steelers. Would not mind again having regular appearances and regular ancillary incoming. The PG does pay us a speaker fee for doing these; it's very good advertising for the paper. No, I do not have a schedule. A lot of times they're random. Depends on who asks.

Do Pens players share rooms when they are on the road?  I was wondering how Reaves got into Kessel's room for that hilarious prank.
Jason Mackey
1:29
I think they arranged for Reaves to get Phil's key. Or a key to Phil's room. No, I do not believe they share rooms.

does the locker room seem tense at all given some of their recent bad performances?  I worry they are missing all the lost leadership to help pull them through on ice struggles.
Jason Mackey
1:30
Umm ... maybe not tense, per se, but there was a palpable sense of relief last night. Noticed that. They needed that win. But overall tense-ness because they lost Cullen, Bonino, etc. ... No, I don't think that's accurate.

What move's are made on or before the deadline to solidify the roster for another run? Does JR pull a 92 roster blow up or a tweak at the deadline ?
Jason Mackey
1:31
I wouldn't blow up this roster. I think GMJR needs to wait and see on a couple things. Backup goalie. Secondary scoring. Depth on defense. May need none, may need all three. Evaluation is taking a little bit more time, however, because of their difficult schedule in the early going.

I think it is a shame that the Pens played both of their games against Edmonton so early in the season, the league does not do a good job of showcasing their best matchups.
Jason Mackey
1:32
Agree here. The NHL does a lousy job of marketing its stars to the casual fan. The NBA is terrific at this. Crosby vs. McDavid -- whether the players like it or not -- should be shown everywhere in North America, to try and please existing fans and attract new ones. That stinks that there's not a better effort made. All of us want to see hockey grow and for people to realize how great it is. Not showcasing your best players? Doesn't help.
Connor McDavid

Good game last night, Pens. See you in the SCF.
Jason Mackey

Thanks, Connor. Honored you could join us.

Hey, what's up, Jason....love the chat!
Jason Mackey
1:32
Thanks, Gordon. Hey, think Gordon Bombay is here, or is he busy preparing for the Junior Goodwill Games?

Hey, what's up, Pittsburgh? We are the champs!!
Jason Mackey
1:33
Chuck!
Jason Mackey
1:33
Hey Jason, how do you think the Pens fare tonight in Calgary?
Jason Mackey
1:33
Hi self. I think the Penguins have their best back-to-back effort to not. Not a blowout, but they win handily. And Jarry shines.

That darn Dino got loose again. Anyone seen him?
Jason Mackey

Check by the rock formation.

I have never been able to find the answer to this but the last few years the Pens have not had a yearbook available for purchase (they are offered as a giveaway during a game, but that's it). What gives?
Jason Mackey
1:33
Have you checked their website?

Was the move to reward DeSmith for his good play in WB by bringing him up for a short time and sending him back pre-planned?  If not, it seemed like an awfully small sample size to make any judgments on him.
Jason Mackey
1:34
It was pre-planned. Sort of. It's very simple, Harold. DeSmith was playing better at the time, and they wanted Jarry to make a few starts and finish working on some things. They figured after that weekend, they would make the change Monday regardless of what happened. Jarry is ahead of DeSmith on the organizational depth chart.

Fire on the Mountain or Scarlet Begonias?
Jason Mackey
1:36
Both. But Begonias is I have to. Favorite: 3/22/90, Copps Coliseum. Brent is so, so on. Runner-up is 7/18/89, when they went Sugar Magnolia > Scarlet Begonias believe on a whim.

How long do we wait to start worrying about lack of 5 on 5 scoring and lack of secondary scoring?
Jason Mackey
1:45
I'd give it until 20 games. Maybe 25. I think it's too early now to form any sort of judgement.
Kevin
1:45
For all the talk of a No. 3 center, I'd love to see them get a No. 2 defenseman. Is that possible/reasonable/smart
Jason Mackey
1:46
I don't think it's any of the above. Their top four is as good as almost anybody, in my opinion. I like Cole-Hunwick as a third pair. Could use depth, but I don't see the need for a No. 2 when you factor in the insane price that would carry with it.

Do you think they are still interested in duchene, galchenyuk, etc? Or has that ship sailed?
Jason Mackey
1:47
Right now ... I think they're going to role with what they have and hope Sheahan improves. It doesn't been long enough to see whether he has made strides. So, for now it has sailed. But who knows? If Sheahan doesn't work out, GMJR has to do something to address that spot.

This long road trip is probably a good time for the team to bond and they can use it given some of their bad games.  Do the guys get a lot of free time or is the trip fairly structured to help the bonding?
Jason Mackey
2:00
No, there's definitely some time for bonding -- team dinners and the like. Really doubtful they practice tomorrow in Vancouver. That's always good for something to do. Great place. These long road trips can be good for a team figuring things out and guys trying to get to know one another.

It has been a bitter/ sweet season so far. Pens are 2nd in the division, 3rd in the conference, 5/6 in the league, have played well at home, have beaten Caps, Preditors and Oilers (and a decent Jets team). Not bad. Then again, they've laid a few eggs too. Think is is a matter of motivation early in the season?
Jason Mackey
2:00
I think there's some validity to that. When you win so much in June, it has to be hard to care as much in October. It's just human nature. I think the trick here is caring enough about the process. Don't have to go nuts but have to do more than they've been doing.

I don't understand why the fourth line is not playing more?  They need to keep minutes down for the top guys.  Is it because Reaves can't play as good as they thought and is holding the whole line back?
