How many games do you think the pens win this year?  I know it is REALLY early but I am still interested in your response based on your time with the team.
Jason Mackey
1:20
Hard to predict exact wins, but I see no way the Penguins don't win the Metro. Sorry for the double-negative. If they're healthy, that is.

I know they don't want Rowney to be 3C, but are they ok with him as 4C, or would they prefer him to be a winger?
Jason Mackey
1:22
It actually could be some of both. The Penguins really like Rowney on the wing. Playing him there, though, means that they got a 3C -- it won't be Jay McClement, I can tell you that -- and McClement or Blueger has nailed down the 4C role. That's a couple boxes to check. But I think if you gave them reliable options at 3 and 4C, then, yeah, they'd be happy to move Rowney to the wing. He was good there. Maybe better than at center.

Mr. Mackey, thank you for the time.
Jason Mackey
1:22
Thank you, Guido.

Hey Jason -- what order would you list the Defense After Letang and Schultz in order of value
Jason Mackey
1:23
Value is a tricky word, but probably 3. Dumoulin 4. Maatta 5. Cole 6. Hunwick 7. Ruhwedel 8. Pouliot.
Guido
1:23
Sorry, How serious are the Penguins wanting to sign Hornqvist long term?
Jason Mackey
1:27
There's definitely interest, Guido, but that's like saying you and I are interested in hitting the lottery. For what price? And is Hornqvist healthy? My guess is that an opposing team will throwing much money at Hornqvist next offseason. His agent is likely advising him to do that. The Penguins, given their young forwards, aren't going to overpay for a winger in his 30s. Wanting to and being able to smartly do so are two different things here.

I'm not high on Sheahan. You seem to be pretty sure the Pens are looking at him. Any other names you think they are looking at for 3C. Hopefully, it begins with a D and ends with an E. He'd be awesome here. We could afford him for the remaining two years of his contract, if someone like Maatta's contract was sent the other way
Jason Mackey
1:28
They've stayed on the periphery with Duchene, but as I point out often: Rutherford and his staff are really good about leaving no stone unturned. Because they stay interested doesn't mean something is imminent. Sheahan was put to me as the biggest and most likely target. I did not hear other names.

Is Sheahan fast enough to play on this team...hopefully faster than Bonino?
Jason Mackey
1:29
Like Bonino -- who wasn't God's gift to skating but was good enough -- I think Sheahan would be fine. It's not a 40-yard dash out there. Smarts count. That's why Bonino was so effective; he knew where to be. They'd have to be convinced Sheahan would feel the same way.

Who are they more likely to acquire, Bozak or Sheahan?
Jason Mackey
1:30
Sheahan. As for Bozak, I worry why it would have taken so long. With Sheahan it makes sense. They want to know what they have with Andreas Andreas Athanasiou
1:31
Sorry for the fake SEND. So Athanasiou has dragged this out. Plus, with Bozak, you're sending out Olli Maatta to get him. A young defensemen under club control at a reasonable rate for a number of years for a one-year rental? Bozak would be great, but I worry about the deal making any business sense whatsoever.

Do you feel JR is being disingenuous regarding a 3rd line center considering the depth of forwards coming up
Jason Mackey
1:32
I'm not sure I understand your use of disingenuous here. If you could clarify, that would be greatly appreciated. Disillusioned? No, I don't think that either. I think Rutherford is being calculated here. Very calculated because he wants to get the right guy. I can't blame him for that.

Is Bengtsson ready for NHL duty? He looked pretty good during the tournament and seemed to have no ill effects fro, his condition. I like his playing style
Jason Mackey
1:33
I do, too. Especially in this system. He's close, I'll say that. But as long as everyone stays healthy -- I know, I know -- there's not a spot for him, and that may be a good thing. He could stand to play a stretch of games in a row at the AHL level. Wouldn't be the worst thing for him.

Is kris letang the second best player on this team?
Jason Mackey
1:34
Could be. There's an argument you could make -- I don't buy it, but I understand it -- that he's more important than Crosby or Malkin because they don't have a replacement for him. Crosby or Malkin could theoretically replace the other one. Letang is such a rare breed. They're definitely a different team with him.
Jaromir Jagr
1:34
Hi Jason...why is no one interested in me? Fourth line would look great with me on it, no?
Jason Mackey
1:34
I would sign you if I could, Jags, believe me.
Lukas
1:34
Are you hearing any other names besides Sheahan tied to the Penguins in trades talks?
Jason Mackey
1:35
I am not. Sorry. I've heard the Sheahan thing is fairly close, though.
Jeff Jimerson
1:35
On a scale on 1-10, how would you rate my singing of the National Anthem?
Jason Mackey
1:35
An 11.
John
1:35
Does Schultz have any chance of staying on the top PP unit with Letang back?
Jason Mackey
1:36
Yeah, I think he does. I'd go with the hot hand. Letang's going to want to play there. I get that. But if he starts the year and they don't produce, I don't think the Penguins owe it to him to keep him there when another option is available to them. I would swap them in and out based on who's productive. But I would give Letang the benefit of the doubt and priority to run the No. 1 unit.

Excited for this hockey season. Pens, bring it!
Jason Mackey
1:36
T.J., it's so good to see again!
Lukas
1:36
Do you see any extensions coming to our next years FAs?
Jason Mackey
1:37
Assuming you mean UFAs ... They'll get something done with Rowney. I see them letting Reaves, Hornqvist, Cole and Niemi walk. I think Hornqvist and Cole will get paid quite nicely.
Lukas
1:37
Any news on the Danis Zaripov front?
Jason Mackey
1:38
Nope. Checked with my source the other day. Was told the Penguins wanted to close on a 3C before saying yes/no on Zaripov. Makes sense.

If Pens stay healthy, do you see them in the SCF? Who looks good in the West? Hear a lot of talk about Edmonton.
Jason Mackey
1:38
Absolutely I see the Pens in the SCF if they stay healthy. See them winning it, too, again if they stay healthy. Out of the West, I like Edmonton some, but I'd more intriguing by Anaheim. Ducks are due.

Better move, signing and spending free cash now on a 3rd line center now or seeing what you have in the young guys for some of the regular season? Remaining a cup contender (even without acquiring a center now) with money to spend seems while trying out the young guys doesn't sound bad.
