Yeah, I would pump the brakes. Only preseason. Reaves is a vet. He knows the drill. Also, I don't think he's looked that bad. I think he knows what he is and plays within that.

Hags?  I like his bank account, but I hope to produce a better dollar to goal ratio, believe me...
Jason Mackey
2:26
He would as well, trust me.

Jason have long wondered about amount of time players miss in NHL vs NFL due to concussions. Both leagues seem very adamant about protocols but the difference in missed time for NHL players (usually at least 2-3 weeks) vs NFL players (usually 1 week) seems out of line to me. Any insights to share?
Jason Mackey
2:27
None. I'm not privy to protocols in either league, and I'm not about to try and evaluate concussions. You should remember, though, that NFL careers are much shorter. That creates a heightened sense of urgency to players to play and make money. Does that contribute to all cases? No, definitely not. But I'm willing to bet it contributes to some.

On paper what looks better in your mind, last year's squad considering all injuries, or this year's squad with 58 back but departures?
Jason Mackey
2:28
I'll take this year's squad with Letang back. I think they can replace Daley and Hainsey. Can replace Kunitz with a productive Hagelin. Rowney will be fine. I'll take Letang > whatever's left from Bonino/Cullen vs. Rowney.

I thought the bottom two lines were pretty bad last night and showed no offensive instincts. Did Sully have anything to say about McKegg last night? He oils the win face offs and showed zero playmakimg ability IMO
Jason Mackey
2:31
One, it's the preseason. I wouldn't get too terribly worked up. Also, you're throwing different combinations together that haven't had much time to build chemistry. Bottom line, McKegg's speed offers a weapon that is ultimately very valuable to the Penguins.

Phil would shoot more if he was on his own third line assuming there's a center who can get him the puck. Do you agree they should split up the offensive talent?
Jason Mackey
2:32
I think Phil and Malkin have earned the right to start together. If it doesn't work, sure, I'm fine with a chance. But there's a chance they could be really, really good together with just a little bit more shooting from Phil.

so do the penguins come out on the ice before each game in the exact same order?  they sure are supersticious.....
Jason Mackey

Hockey players are crazy. And I say that in the most endearing way possible.

Any thoughts on McKegg's career possession numbers? Simply put, they're ghastly, even relative to some bad teams.
Jason Mackey
2:33
Yeah, not good. But he's going to draw third-line matchups here with the potential of having Hagelin and Hornqvist on his wings, provided things track as we're expecting. I'm not ready to get too worked up over past possession numbers.

Is Dumo still the locker room DJ?  or did he pass off to one of the younger guys?
Jason Mackey
2:35
Nope, that's him. He's also commissioner of the team's fantasy football league. I think he likes both roles, honestly.
Lauren
2:35
Given his recent offensive production, do you think Olli Maatta will receive power play time this year?
Jason Mackey
2:35
Not sure. Brian Dumoulin has looked good there so far, and they value Maatta on the PK. You may be looking at Letang/Schultz as the only D on the top unit, then a 3-2 look on the second unit, with Dumoulin and either Letang or Schultz.

Do you see this being a rebound year for Niemi, and do you think he's a bonda fide backup for Murray?
Jason Mackey
2:36
Both, honestly. I still think Niemi has a bounce-back year, but he's absolutely a backup to Murray. It's not the timeshare that it was last season ... which, even that wasn't completely true.

Who decides the schedule Im really glad not mad or sad that the regular season is in eye sight but opening night against the blues is lame rather stick it to Washington again.
Jason Mackey

Honestly, I don't know. That's a good question. The league? But I don't know who specifically or even what department. It's an interesting story. Quick Google search turned this up. Check it out: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2014/11/08/a-few-clues-as-to-how-n...

If it's Hags McKegg and Horny on the third line, that's great for possession perhaps, but who's going to put the puck in the next. They all have pretty bad 5-on-5 scoring numbers
Jason Mackey
2:38
I'm not saying those are set in stone, either. But, also, have those three ever played together on a line? No, they haven't. That's why I'm not willing to predict whether it will be good or bad.
Ollie
2:38
If I am so bad why was I such a high pick, and why am I absolutely rolling in it?
Jason Mackey
2:38
You're not rolling in it, Olli.
2:39
OK, folks. Thanks so much for your patience. That does it for this week. Talk to you next Thursday ... when the season will have started. Crazy.
