As I've thought more about long-term pitcher risk, I think Sale gets a slight edge over Archer, who gets an edge over Quintana

If the playoffs started today who would be the 4 WC teams?
Jeff Sullivan

Giants, Mets, Mariners, Rangers

It's starting to look more and more like the Braves' talk of aggressively speeding up their rebuild was just talk. What was the point? Will they actually sell more tickets if fans think they tried and failed to sign some stars?
Jeff Sullivan
10:04
For one thing, the Braves aren't finished trying. They could still, say, go get Chris Archer, because they have the pieces. But I don't think they actually thought they could assemble a playoff contender in 2017. I think the lofty goal is .500 and they've improved their chances just be putting together a pitching staff that isn't embarrassingly horrible

How bad are 20 tools compared to average joes? Could I beat Billy butler in a foot face? Does coco crisp have any "zip" on his throws?
Jeff Sullivan
10:04
Bad throwers can probably out-throw you but you can probably out-run the worst runners, provided you're in some decent shape
10:05
A year or two ago Matthew Kory, Rob Neyer and I participated in a little project where we tried to run faster than David Ortiz. We were limited by the field we chose having a really slick artificial surface but we could beat him down the line

Where do the white Sox go free agent wise? Are they keeping garcia, lawrie, and starting tilson or adam engel?
Jeff Sullivan
10:05
You think free agents are going to be falling all over themselves to sign with the White Sox?
Tyson Ross
10:06
Do you agree with Jason Churchill that Dipoto should NOT have a go at signing me for the Mariners? (I'd SO like to play in the PNW!)
Jeff Sullivan
10:06
He probably fits a lot better somewhere else, and his medicals suck
Jeb
10:06
What do the Jays do about their outfield now? Surely it doesn't involve trading Stroman, right?
Jeff Sullivan
10:06
zero chance

Snow! Would you have interest in watching snow baseball (meaning played on fallen snow, not with a ball made of snow)?
Jeff Sullivan
10:07
I watched the Mariners try to play the Indians through a blizzard. It was entertaining and horrible and I felt like someone could've died

Why has no one else repeated what John Smoltz did - Ace pitcher to relief ace? Now only failed starters move to relief. You dont think Sabathia or other older former aces would be great closers?
Jeff Sullivan
10:10
I think the things that cause good starters to break down probably preclude them from experiencing great success in the bullpen. Throw in the fact that everyone wants all their relievers throwing 95+ and there aren't many potential fits
Tim Lincecum always seemed like one possibility but, alas, here we are
The Boat
10:11
Do you think teams are really concerned about Greg Holland being toast? I'd rather roll the dice on him at 2/25 than pay like 5/90 for Chapman, wouldn't you?
Jeff Sullivan
10:11
Depends on my situation. If I'm really cost-conscious, sure. But Holland hasn't been healthy or great for two years. Chapman has been amazing for two years.

If the "Super Team of the AL" Boston Red Sox are good and stay good for 4+ years and the Yankees strategy of "get all the prospects and fill the margins later" pans out so that they are a 2016 Cubs-lite in 2019, doesn't the 1 game Wild card kinda suck?
Jeff Sullivan
10:12
I cannot imagine being worried about anything that might happen in baseball in 2019!
Capo
10:13
How many games do you anticipate out of Brantley this season?
Jeff Sullivan
10:13
130, but with a legitimate shot of him just being bad and broken forever
David
10:14
Are the Red Sox now as good as the Cubs?
Jeff Sullivan
10:14
I'd say so, especially when you fold in the AL/NL league adjustment

10:15
How much of the Dodgers decision to sign Turner considers how long Seager will be SS?
Jeff Sullivan
10:15
I don't think it's a great concern of theirs. Even if Seager had to move he could go to 2B. Or maybe by that point Turner isn't a 3B anymore

10:15
But Holland was amazing for two years before that. That's what happens to humans who throw the baseball hard...they're amazing until their arm falls off.
Jeff Sullivan
10:15
Holland's has fallen off, and Chapman's has not

Can you compare the prospect Kris Bryant to the prospect Yoan Moncada? Both rated #1 universally, but was/is either a better product in your mind?
Jeff Sullivan
10:17
I think Bryant always felt more polished. And he's had more in the way of game power. Moncada has more risk to him -- Bryant was a near-lock to hit -- but Moncada also has superior athleticism, which you can see in his stolen-base totals. Bryant of course is now good at everything but the best version of Moncada has a baserunning skill that Bryant really does not

Nats still have some qmarks - 1b/LF and closer specifically. What would you do next? I don't really want then to spend 85mil on a closer - I'd rather have another bat and colome.
Jeff Sullivan
10:18
I wouldn't be surprised if they got like David Robertson and someone like Seth Smith
jack
10:18
Heard the Sox we're shopping JBJ - what could they expect for him?
Jeff Sullivan
10:18
I don't know why they would do that
Red Sox
10:18
Would you rather have- Kluber, Carrasco, and Salazar or Sale, Price, and Porcello?- given that they stay healthy all year
Jeff Sullivan
10:19
Well, you don't just get that guarantee that Salazar stays healthy all year
So I take the latter
