Juan Nicasio

Does Neal Huntington realize that the Phillies were the first in waiver priority for both kinds of waivers?
Jeff Sullivan
10:43
He probably didn't think the Phillies would care about grabbing Juan Nicasio
Daniel
10:45
Is Tommy Pham going to get MVP votes?
Jeff Sullivan
10:45
I bet he could get one or two down-ballot votes
Charlie Blackmon got one last year. So did Evan Longoria

I feel like my opinion is extremely unpopular in that Verlander doesn't really make the Astros much better. Keuchel has been great despite his ~3 weeks of being bad, McHugh has been good since returning. McCullers will be back soon. Peacock is having a career year. Morton, etc. What am I missing?
Jeff Sullivan
10:46
Not one of those pitchers is considered reliable
The fair counterpoint is that, even a month ago, Verlander himself wasn't considered reliable. But there are major question marks about every single Astros starter candidate. Even Keuchel, who hasn't been great since returning from the DL
Verlander is insurance, and he's a far better bet than anyone else to soak up six or seven playoff innings at a time

Do minor league players have a union?
Jeff Sullivan
10:47
No

10:48
Can you give a quick dissection of Carmo since the all star break? has a 5ish k/9 and a 4.50 SIERRA. Darvish doesn't appear that far behind him either in looking bad. Is this just a case of guys getting tired towards end of the year?
Jeff Sullivan
10:48
Darvish is fine. Torpedoed by one horrible start
10:50
Who is CarMo? Is it not Carlos Martinez? Because Carlos Martinez has far better numbers than that
Anthony
10:50
Fun fact: what would a player look like if you combined Joey Votto on - base ability with Giancarlo Stanton slugging?
Jeff Sullivan
10:50
Barry Bonds
Pete
10:50
Any concern for the Dodgers after losing 5 straight?
Jeff Sullivan
10:50
They have nothing at all to play for. These games don't matter
HulkSmash
10:51
more/equal/less than you thought the tigers would get for verlander considering the money they sent to the astros?
Jeff Sullivan
10:51
They got more than I expected. Astros clearly really buy in to Verlander's surge
Matt
10:51
Speaking of Stanton, does he still have any chance of being traded? Or does this recent homer surge somehow put him in the "untouchable" area because of PR concerns for new ownership?
Jeff Sullivan
10:51
I think this is a situation where, objectively, it could make the most sense to trade Stanton, but realistically, the new owners just can't do that
10:52
The number-one priority for these people is to prove to the area that they're committed to trying to build a real baseball team. There's no way they could flip Stanton and sell it as a different-thinking, forward-thinking baseball move
10:53
The fallout would be catastrophic, and fans would tune the team out immediately
Charlie
10:53
Do you think there should be more bunt hits in general?
Jeff Sullivan
10:53
Yes
But bunting is very hard, especially with everyone throwing 95
forever it
10:54
It's supposed to be 115 degrees in the Bay Area this weekend. How hot would it have to be for MLB to postpone a game? A cursory Google search shows the last such postponement was back in 1936.
Jeff Sullivan
10:54
I'll say that conversations would begin around...120 degrees. I mean, they play summer baseball in Texas.

10:55
Which comes first: league-wide DH or 26+ man active rosters?
Jeff Sullivan
10:55
I'll guess the second one
mmddyyyy
10:55
How much are you on twitter?
Jeff Sullivan
10:55
I feel like I have to read it way too often
But I am not that active a twitterer because I get nothing out of it
Anthony
10:56
Would you consider Jonathan Schoop a top 3-5 second baseman at this point?
Jeff Sullivan
10:56
Gets pretty weird after Altuve. Not a lot of distinction. So Schoop is as deserving of that placement as anyone else
NL
10:56
Will Dodgers ongoing 5 game slide end their 116 win hopes?  Need to go 25-5 the rest of the year which is doable but very difficult even for them.
Jeff Sullivan
10:57
I can't imagine they care

re: rosenthal, i want your work and i want it for free. is that too much to ask?
Jeff Sullivan
10:57
Look at his mentions sometime when he links to one of his articles. People suck
