Day 1 of the draft in the books, and trade season approaching -- should be plenty to talk about. Feel free to start asking questions and I'll start answering in a minute

Too early to determine if Matt Adams has any return value. 9 Hrs in a few weeks.
Steve Adams
3:06
I don't think a couple weeks of hot hitting is going to alter his perception much -- he's had hot streaks before. He's still the same guy that can't hit lefties and isn't a great defender and is limited to 1B only. They might be able to get a bit more than they gave up for him, but I wouldn't anticipate them getting anything especially exciting. Plus, they'd be fine just keeping him as a bench bat. That bench was/is awful.

3:06
Surprised by Royce going 1st overall?
Steve Adams
3:06
It was a surprise in the sense that Lewis wasn't mentioned as a serious 1-1 candidate until the day of the draft. But by the time the draft rolled around, it was clear that he was as likely as McKay.
3:07
Found it interesting that one of the Rays beat writers (Topkin?) said last night that McKay acknowledged that the Twins made him an offer but he felt he could do better further down the board. So it probably very much did come down to which of the two would take a price in the Twins' range to allow them to sign some tougher guys later in the draft (e.g. Blayne Enlow)

3:07
Do you follow all three days of the draft?
Steve Adams
3:08
I have MLB.com's coverage of the draft with Callis and Mayo up in the background, but we're not going to do much in the way of coverage of Days 2 and 3 on MLBTR. We'll note when mid-round guys sign way over/under slot and when the first-rounders sign

SI compared Hunter Greene to me. Is that an accurate comparison?
Steve Adams
3:09
I find comps in general to be lazy and all too often based more on race/nationality as opposed to actual athletic similarities. Hunter Greene is Hunter Greene. Let him be Hunter Greene.

3:10
Hey steve, do you think Yankees will go for someone at first base? or they are going to trust in Carter and Bird?. And, it's obvious they're going for a 3rd baseman, who do you think could be?
Steve Adams
3:10
I do think they'll be in the market for first basemen -- probably rentals, because they're not going to give up on Bird long term. Hosmer and Alonso make sense. I don't know that they'
that they'll pursue a 3B with Gleyber Torres waiting.

3:11
Does a Jose Iglesias trade for Brad Hand sound good? What about a Zimmerman for Jacoby Ellsbury trade?
Steve Adams
3:12
Both sound good to a Tigers fan, I'm sure, but no neither is realistic. Iglesias is a no-hit shortstop that'll be a free agent before Hand. The Padres wouldn't even entertain the thought. If they move Hand, it's for young, controllable parts.
Blue Jays Fan
3:12
Think the blue jays need an upgrade in LF could they look at Andrew McCutchen?
Steve Adams
3:14
How sure are we that McCucthen is even a definitive upgrade? He's been hitting well for all of two to three weeks, and he'll cost a significant amount in a trade and financially. I know McCutchen is a fun name to speculate on, but the trade buzz and excitement surrounding him for the past year plus hasn't lined up with the actual on-field results. There are plenty of corner outfield options that would be cheaper to acquire and probably more productive. We'll have an updated list of our top trade candidates in the near future.

3:15
Which AL team with a sub-.500 record is more likely to make the post season: KC, TOR, SEA, or TEX?
Steve Adams
3:15
I'd take the Jays of the bunch. They've been playing fine since their 2-11 start, and they're getting healthier (Travis loss hurts them). Royals are cooked as far as I'm concerned. Mariners and Rangers have a whole lot of health concerns, especially Seattle, and they're both buried in the West.

3:16
Will Newcomb stay in the rotation long term?
Steve Adams
3:16
I think it's entirely dependent on his performance. They have enough other arms that they could turn to that they don't stubbornly need to let him get mauled against MLB hitters if he's not performing.

3:17
If Cubs take on all money for Greinke who would we give up in prospects?
Steve Adams
3:18
The reason the Cubs don't have Greinke or the other top arms (excluding Lester) is because they didn't want to make that level of commitment to a pitcher in his late 30s. They made Lester the one guy they're committing to on that level... they're not eating the whole Greinke contract
Brewers Fan
3:18
A RH high school pitcher has never gone #1 in the draft. Why do teams not like drafting high school right handed pitchers early?
Steve Adams
3:20
Any pitcher is risky -- taking a high school pitcher is about the riskiest proposition there is. These kids are often so much more projection over polish... you're dreaming on how well their body is going to fill out, how much velocity they'll add, how the raw third pitch they're showing a feel for will actually develop, etc. And you're banking on all of that panning out well without the kid succumbing to injuries.
Position players in general are safer than pitchers, and college players safer than high school kids.

3:21
Does Andriese's injured hip do more damage to the Rays, or to his chances of staying in the rotation when healthy?
Steve Adams
3:22
They're well equipped to handle the loss. Not to insult Andriese, but I don't consider his loss especially damaging to the Rays' chances simply because they're so deep in arms with Faria, Snell and De Leon (although he's currently on the minor league DL) all waiting in the wings. Andriese is a fine 4/5 starter, but they can weather that loss. If anything, it's more detrimental to his chances of remaining in the rotation, as you said, because Faria/Snell/De Leon could easily lay claim to that spot and leave Andriese in a swingman role again.

3:22
Should I take a flier on Jhonny Peralta? Pablo just isn't cutting it.
Steve Adams
3:23
I don't really see why not. Someone's going to. I don't have high hopes, but their third base mix is pretty ugly right now.

3:23
Time to institute a pitch clock? Imagine the NFL without a play clock. Or the NBA without a shot clock. B-O-R-I-N-G!
Steve Adams
3:23
Those aren't apples to apples comparisons at all, but I'd be fine with a pitch clock. Especially after watching Cory Gearrin pitch the other night. He may be the most insufferable pitcher I've ever seen. Guy makes Raffy Betancourt look like a quick worker.

3:24
What is the Royals really going to do at the tradeline!! Trade or say put!!!
Steve Adams
3:24
I'll be shocked if they don't clean house for the most part. Might keep one of the pending FAs if they don't get offers to their liking, but the best ones (Cain, Moose, Hosmer) are all playing well and should all net a pretty nice return.
Jonathan Lucroy
3:25
Seeing as Texas has good depth at C in both big leagues and in the minors and they just drafted a catcher high, where do you see me being traded and for what kind of package???
Steve Adams
3:27
They'll only trade Lucroy if they're out of it in late July. The fact that they drafted a catcher has no bearing on their Major League roster. Catchers take longer than almost any position to develop, and the guy they took -- Matt Whatley in the 3rd, which isn't that high -- has questions about his hit tool. He's years away from the Majors.
Ben F
3:27
Brent rooker a soild pick for twins after drafting him last year?
Steve Adams
3:28
He was a signability pick -- huge power without defensive value and little leverage as a senior. It was a fine pick, but it was also about saving money to be able to draft Enlow in the 3rd and Bechtold in the 5th.
Yankees 1st Round Pick
3:29
What were the Yankees thinking picking a pitcher that just had TJ with the 16th overall pick? He surely would have still been there in the 2nd round.
Steve Adams
3:29
They took a first-round talent in the second round and will try to sign him to an over-slot deal with the money they saved from taking Schmidt at 16
