Live Chat With Tim Dierkes

The Reds hung a seven-spot on Drew Pomeranz, David Price landed on the DL, and a dragon died.  Let's get chatting!

What’s your outlook for the Nats with so many players on the IL?
Tim Dierkes
2:03
I still think they're right there with the Phillies and Braves.  It's really hard to play with Rendon, Soto, Turner, and to a lesser extent Zimmerman, but none of the injuries seem to be of huge concern.

Hey Tim, I'm a diehard, diehard Mets fan. Is there any hope that we can turn this around or am I setting myself up for a miserable summer?
Tim Dierkes
2:05
There is certainly enough talent here for the Mets to reach the playoffs, and their rotation is top-heavy enough where they could theoretically go on a run.  To actually get there they'll probably need some pitching reinforcements.

Do you think Kimbrel will generate a bidding war after the draft ends? Every contender in the NL could use him
Tim Dierkes
2:06
Teams had all winter to enter a bidding war on Kimbrel and didn't.  While the need for relievers ramps up in the summer, the ability to fit in large salaries goes down unless a team left space for that.  Somebody could give him $7-10MM for a half season though.  I just worry about whether he'll hit the ground running after being out so long.
West Side Left Side

Over the next 5 years, which NL West Left Side of the infield is better...
Tatis and Machado,
Story and Arrenado, or
Seager and Turner
Tim Dierkes
2:07
Wow really tough one.  I would not take the Dodgers' guys there.  I'll go with Story/Arenado but it's close.

Cole has to be on the radar next offseason, right?  Cole, Gore, Paddack sounds like a mighty fine top 3
Tim Dierkes
2:09
Could Gerrit Cole be a fit for the Padres?  I think they have shown us they can't be ruled out, even on players we naturally would think they cannot afford.  But in 2020 they will be paying over $75MM to three players, so the idea that they'd add a fourth guy who will make $25MM+ seems unlikely to me.

Sitting Price precautionary or are more serious things to come?
Tim Dierkes
2:10
Based on what I've read so far, no one knows or is saying anything.  I believe we'll get more info later today.

Last night- just a bad episode or worst episode in the series?
Tim Dierkes
2:11
GoT has clearly run its course.  I don't read enough about it to understand why they truncated the amount of episodes in this season and last, but they are trying to move the plot along so quickly that all the things that happen don't carry proper weight.

Spoilers Dude!
Tim Dierkes
2:11
On the one hand, it's Monday now and I think people in general should feel free to write about things that happened in GoT.  On the other, I guess you don't expect to get spoiled here in a baseball chat, so my bad.

2:11
Should the Nats give up on Brian Dozier?
Tim Dierkes
2:12
Having him on a fantasy team, I've been asking this question all season.  I'd say they don't really need to give up on him to the point of releasing him, they can just cede more playing time to Howie Kendrick.

2:12
Where do you see Justin Smoak getting traded? Houston could use a 1B...
Tim Dierkes
2:16
Angels could be a nice fit, if they're even in contention a month or two from now.  I don't know that Smoak is THAT much better than Gurriel.
Matt Chapman
2:16
Kimbrel is a professional reliever who has been doing the same routine since 2008, why would you "just worry about whether he'll hit the ground running after being out so long." - thats so disrespectful to him and media narratives like this just amplify his situation and make it worse. He will need to pitch in like 2 AAA games and he'll be good to go.
Tim Dierkes
2:17
I disagree, I think how any player will perform without a Spring Training should be a valid concern for a team giving him good money.
The guy
2:17
Would you try to trade Stroman now well his market value is high ?
Tim Dierkes
2:18
There are certain aspects of his performance that aren't sustainable, but competing GMs already understand that and aren't going to be swayed by his ERA.  He profiles as one of the top three available SP this summer so I think the right move is to let the offers roll in throughout July and make a really strong choice.

What are the chances that Kimbrel and Keuchel file grievances against the league and cause the draft pick compensation rule to be removed for the next offseason? It seems awfully fast to make a change the way the league usually opperates, but would grievances accelerate the timetable on a rule change?
Tim Dierkes
2:19
A grievance wouldn't go anywhere, and if draft pick compensation is to be eliminated it wll happen through collective bargaining.

Do you see the Angels holding or folding at the deadline? If the latter, would there be much interest in players such as Calhoun? Harvey, Cahill, and Allen haven’t established much value.
Tim Dierkes
2:21
I'm in the fold camp.  I know they're not planning on punting 2020, but Andrelton Simmons and Tyler Skaggs are probably their best trade chips and Eppler will have to listen.
Harvey
2:21
Do you see Cleveland getting it together and making a run at the Twins?
Tim Dierkes
2:21
I think the Indians' injuries have brought them about down to even with the Twins, so take your pick.  Midseason trades could be a difference-maker.

If the commissioner's office wants shorter ballgames, why not play fewer innings?
Tim Dierkes
2:22
Your typical baseball fan would strongly disapprove of such a change, is my guess.
2:23
What would you do if MLB shortened games to 8 innings?

I'd be happy about it (3.4% | 20 votes)

Wouldn't care (5.8% | 34 votes)

I'd be annoyed but would still be a fan (55.9% | 330 votes)

I'd literally quit MLB entirely (34.9% | 206 votes)

does anybody playing positions 3-9 have positive trade value for the giants? guessing only guys to rule out are posey and duggar?
Tim Dierkes
2:24
I think there are teams that would like to have Brandon Belt on their roster, but none at $16MM/year.  So mostly, no.
2:25
So back to that poll...literally a third of the people in this chat would walk away from the sport if they trimmed off an inning.  Or at least say that they would.  It would just anger way too many fans.
2:26
However, many giant corporations have the mindset of knowingly pissing off its current fans and not caring, knowing that 10% could leave but maybe the change they want to make could cause them to grow more than that.  When corporations face decisions like that, they'll often choose the option that involves focusing only on bringing in new customers.
2:27
I don't think 8 or 7 inning games would bring in enough new MLB fans to make that change worthwhile.
2:28
One parallel that comes to mind is some terrible consulting advice I recently paid for, unfortunately.  The recommendation was to disregard current MLB readers in the name of acquiring new ones at all cost, becoming a general MLB news site and going full-on clickbait for all headlines.
