Hi everyone, let's talk some Mariners baseball.  Hey baby I hear a blues a'callin.....
Uh, "the" blues a'callin'

One post in and I've already screwed up a layup of a Frasier reference.

Frazier has left the building...

Yeah, he isn't being re-signed

If the M’s opt not to make a QO to/re-sign Haniger, does Conforto feel like a guy they’d go after on a one-year deal? He’s a Seattle guy, and he’d figure to be the clear starter in RF and give him a chance to re-establish his value before hitting free agency again next offseason to land a multi-year contract.
Mark P

Conforto adds another question mark to an outfield already full of question marks (aside from J-Rod).  I can see a rebuilding team signing Conforto to give him those at-bats, and then maybe flipping him at the deadline.
Ironically, if Conforto did hit well, and the Mariners were trying to get by with their current outfield mix and it wasn't working.....Conforto might be a trade target

How aggressive on spending do you think the FO is? Our pitching is locked in, but we desperately need offense, and a lot of it. Don't have a ton of prospects anymore
Mark P
5:34
Now that the Mariners are in go-for-it mode, I can see them bumping spending by a pretty considerable margin.  As I noted in the Outlook, the M's have about $28MM to spend before even matching the previous franchise high.

If you were in Dipoto’s position who would be at the top of your wish list? Would you sign one of the top shortstops even if you have to overpay for them?
Mark P
5:36
Shortstop seems like a big need, and I'd dispense with the position-change idea and just move Crawford to second base.

Do you believe Haniger receives a QO from the team, and if so, do you think he accepts it?
Mark P
5:38
I'd lean towards the M's issuing Haniger a QO, since if he accepts it, that more or less solves the outfield "problem" right there.  Naturally $19.65MM is a big chunk of that $28MM in payroll space I just mentioned, but the Mariners could have more to spend on another big addition, or they might free up some money with another move.

If Haniger rejects the QO, then the Mariners can get an extra pick if he did leave.  Having that extra pick would also be useful if Seattle did end up surrendering a pick for another qualifying free agent

Flexen got sidelined big time when they got Castillo.  Do they move him the bullpen with option to fill in the rotation, or do they look to trade Flex (or Marco)?
Mark P
5:41
I'm always prone to thinking a team should keep as much pitching depth as possible, since the Mariners' other depth options (i.e. Hancock and company) are all untested at the MLB level.  It only takes one injury for Seattle's rotation to suddenly look a little thin.

Why are the M's so adamant about keeping JP @ SS? Move him to 2nd and sign Turner!
Mark P
5:42
My hot take is that I probably wouldn't have signed Crawford to an extension at all.  He's a perfectly good player, but not someone I would've felt overwhelmed to commit $40MM to

Should the mariners trade Kyle Lewis? Would a team like the Nats make sense?
Kyle Lewis & Abraham Toro

Are we part of the M’s future plans?  Or are we trade bait?

What do you do with Evan white?

What do they do with Winker?
Ro
5:43
What do you do with Kelenic at this point?
Mark P
5:45
It speaks to the Mariners' outfield issue that they have so many outfielders who can just as easily project as trade bait as they can pieces to be counted on for 2023.  If Lewis is healthy, he still has a lot of potential.  Kelenic has looked overmatched in the majors but he has still so little experience that I'd be hesitant to give up on him entirely.
5:46
Toro might be just a guy, and superfluous on a team that has Dylan Moore.

White should probably get another look to see how he recovers from injury, but the M's certainly wouldn't say no to a decent trade offer.

Are there any player chats in the works? The one with Sewald last year was super fun!
Mark P

The plan is to explore some more player chats later in the offseason, when things are a little quieter hot stove-wise.

Guessing Matt Boyd will want to see if a team gives him an opportunity to start this offseason, but if not he was really solid out of the pen as their only lefty arm post-ASB. Feels like a reunion would make a lot of sense for the hometown kid?
Mark P
5:48
If they did trade Gonzales or Flexen, re-signing Boyd for essentially that kind of swingman role would be an interesting idea.  Boyd might be open to it, since he'd likely get some chance to start, and he'd stay close to home and playing for a winner.

I’m afraid the team won’t even finish ahead of the A’s next season. All the position players outside of Julio are bad. How do we fix this
Mark P

After the JP, Julio, and Luis Castillo extensions this year, do you believe any current Ms still under team control will get a long-term extension this offseason? If so, who do you think would be the most likely candidates?
Mark P
5:50
I'd be surprised if the Mariners hadn't already talked to Gilbert and Sullivan's agents about an early-career contract extension
LOL, I meant Kirby, not "Sullivan."  Oops.

5:51
If they let Haniger walk does it upset team chemistry like it did when they traded Graveman?  Jerry risk losing players faith?
Mark P
5:52
The fact that the Graveman deal ultimately didn't hurt the team surely helped sooth any hurt feelings.
An offseason trade also carries less in-the-moment impact than a deadline deal, since players can be shocked by a trade and then have to play a game a few hours later.

Macko to the Guardians for Rosario. Guardians are looking for LH RP, Seattle extends Rosario…what say you?
Mark P
5:54
Guardians are also trying to win in 2023, and the M's might be direct competition for a playoff spot.  Macko isn't an immediate help for Cleveland.
