Happy 4th of July to all the American readers out there. Let's celebrate with some baseball questions!
All Star Snubs
7:48
Bassitt an All star snub imo, who else do you think was snubbed from this meaningless popularity contest?
Mark P
7:49
Bassitt not making the team was an eye-opener for me as well, but there will be probably close to a dozen All-Star roster changes between now and the game due to injuries and whatnot.  I suspect Bassitt will end up on the team
Red Sox fan
7:50
Are Duran and sale enough reinforcements for the Sox?
Mark P
7:50
I think they'd look for more established help than "only" a rookie (albeit a promising one) and a guy coming back from a long TJ absence (even when that guy is, you know, Chris Sale).
7:51
Bench help in the form of a multi-positional player or a first baseman (or one guy to check both boxes) would also be of use
Eric
7:51
Is there any way to convince  Hal to sell and gear up for next year?
Mark P
7:53
As we saw in 2016, the Yankees aren't afraid to sell at the deadline if they don't think they can realistically contend.  I don't think you'll see a full-on fire sale or anything, but the team will be willing to move some rental players, at least
Andrew
7:53
The Yankees are really bad right now. Should they consider unloading Judge?
Mark P
7:54
Hmm, well, this would be a bit more than just a rental move.  Frankly, given the Yankees' usual hesitance about contract extensions, Judge seemed maybe a little unlikely to be a long-term answer in the Bronx.

I would consider the odds of a Judge trade to be pretty low.
7:55
Oops, hit 'send' too soon!

Low because if the Yankees just wait the season out and get under the luxury tax threshold, they'll theoretically be willing to spend like crazy again this offseason and overhaul the roster.  In that case, I can see them just keeping Judge because, y'know, he's really good, and so they can make a run in 2022
Tommy
7:56
Do you buy the White Sox being interested in Story?
Mark P
7:56
Sure, I don't see why just about any contender *wouldn't* be thinking about creative ways to add Story to their team
Matt
7:57
If Cubs were to pay salary for Bryant to a team like OAK or TB, what type of return could they expect?
Mark P
8:01
Let's see, maybe a three-prospect trade package headlined by a top 100 guy.  Not Wander, Brujan, or Soderstrom, but the next tier down in either organization.

For the Rays, maybe someone like Edwards or Walls, considering they're so loaded with middle infielders.  For the A's, maybe the Cubs would be interested in someone like an AJ Puk as a change of scenery candidate?
Reds
8:01
Should the Reds trade Castellanos?
Mark P
8:01
Things tend to change on a dime in the NL Central, but the Reds are currently looking more like buyers than sellers.
Matt
8:02
What type of price do you see CHI getting for Kimbrel?
Mark P
8:04
"Someone as good as Gleyber Torres, RIGHT?" --- every Cubs fan

If the Cubs did go into pure sell mode, I wonder if they might accept a pretty minor return (couple of ok but nothing special prospects) for Kimbrel if another team is willing to eat his entire salary.  That seems like a more realistic scenario to me than the Cubs scoring a major prospect back
Astros
8:05
Could we trade for Adam Frazier and Rodriguez of the Pirates
Mark P
8:07
Sure, except Frazier/RichRod would put Houston over the luxury tax threshold, which the team is trying to avoid if possible.  Getting both in the same deal would also cost quite a bit in prospects, which I'm not sure the Astros are willing to do given their lack of high draft picks to replenish the system
AJ
8:08
What are the odds of Jonathon Scoop being traded at this point?
Mark P
8:08
Very high
I guess we should acknowledge that Detroit has quietly been a pretty decent team over the last several weeks, but they're still too far back to avoid being anything but deadline sellers
Astros
8:10
Frazier and Rodriguez to the Astros for Toro, Whitley and a PTBNL who says No?
Mark P
8:10
Pirates say no in a heartbeat
Dalton Wilcox
8:10
Does anyone on the planet care that the Brewers' 11-1 run got the offense all the way to 17th place by wRC+ and wOBA? The mighty Brewers, half season champs!
Mark P
8:12
If the Brewers' offense is starting to heat up, then this team is a legitimate World Series challenger.  The Brewers contending, the Bucks in the NBA Finals, the Packers in the final four last year.....what a time to be a Wisconsin sports fan!

uh, please forget about the inevitable Aaron Rodgers trade. And Giannis being hurt.
Andrew
8:14
It’s clear at this point that Hosmer is a liability for SD. Do you think SD could find a realistic trade for him?
Mark P
8:17
It would take some creativity, and fortunately AJ Preller is a pretty creative GM.  Hosmer is owed "only" $59MM from 2022-25, which isn't an incredibly exorbitant sum all things considered (it was a wise move to front-load that deal).

Seems like San Diego would either have to take on another big contract in return, or attach a very good prospect or two to Hosmer to get another team to take the contract off their books.  The other factor is Hosmer's partial no-trade clause, so he can veto deals to at least some teams.

So hear me out… could Matt Chapman (OAK) be available this off-season? Houston is stacked, Seattle and LAA are coming on strong, and Oakland never quite keeps their stars through arbitration, especially on a down season but with his arb platform high. Donaldson 2.0 perhaps?
Mark P
8:19
I mean, every Oakland fan reading that question cringed at the idea of another trade return like the one the A's got for Donaldson, but still.
Can't be ruled out, especially with Chapman/Olson getting more expensive in arbitration, and Olson looking like the better investment of the two at the moment.
Jill
8:20
If Cleveland sells at the trade deadline will they retool or do a full rebuild?
Mark P
8:21
My guess is retool.  "Full rebuild" would suggest moving Ramirez, Bieber, etc., and the team has too much talent on hand to blow things up entirely.  I'm sure Cleveland is thinking that if their pitching can stay healthy in 2022, they can make a pretty quick return to contention
Cards Fan
8:21
Will Kim get traded?
Mark P
8:22
If the Cards decide to sell, yeah.  Kim is maybe the only rental player who is either a realistic trade candidate (I doubt Molina/Wainwright get moved) or would have any real value.
Xander
8:24
Who will be drafted higher, Leiter or Rocker?
Mark P
8:25
Based on the most recent rumors (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/06/2021-amateur-draft-rumors-pirat...), my guess would be Leiter, since it seems like Boston will grab him at #4 if he's still available.  Texas at #2 is the only team really linked in any strong way to Rocker at the moment.

Of course, with all draft rumors, who knows what might have changed in the last few days, or what'll change between now and next week.  (Or what false information is being floated by teams.)

does The emergence of Jake Fraley make a Haniger trade more likely?
