A later start than usual for the weekend chat, but, y'know, it was kind of a busy day around baseball.  Let's get to the questions!
Tom Robson

Is the best thing for the Phillies to sit back a bit for next season and try to get player development turned around, then make a push in 2023?
Mark P
9:33
When you're paying that much to Wheeler, Harper, Realmuto, etc., it doesn't make much sense to waste a year of their primes to sit back for a season.

The Phils have to figure out a way to rebuild their minor league system on the fly, while still being competitive at the big league level.  No small feat.

Will Kershaw stay with the Dodgers or sign somewhere else?
Mark P
9:34
I'm pretty confident Kershaw is a Dodger for life

Chances Machado is traded this offseason?
Mark P
9:35
MANNY Machado?  How about zero?  The Padres will have to make some overhauls this winter, but moving Machado wouldn't be the way to go about it

Will trading draft picks be a part of the new CBA? Has there been talk of it being included in recent months or past years? What do you think the value of the #1 pick be?
Mark P
9:37
I'd personally love to see all draft picks be open for trades, that would add a lot of spice and casual fan interest to the draft.

The #1 pick would hold close to as much value in baseball as it would in other sports.  Unlike in football or basketball, a blue chip #1 wouldn't instantly turn a struggling baseball team into a possible future contender, but that doesn't mean a team would surrender it without an absolute trade haul

Is DH in the NL a given?
Mark P
9:39
Probably nothing is a given since who knows how the CBA talks might play out, but many around the game expect the universal DH to become a reality.

Lots of moves for Mets .. does Rojas get the axe?
Mark P
9:40
I think he's a goner

Did we mess up trading for berrios and missing the playoffs?
Mark P
9:41
(Atkins = Jays GM)

Berrios wasn't the problem, or even a problem.  Not getting any real bullpen help at the deadline was the larger issue, since the Jays ultimately never got truly steady relief pitching at any point.
Of course, when you miss the playoffs by one game, there are a million things you can point to

% chance Castellanos is in a Reds uniform next year?
Mark P
9:44
This is speculation on my end, but I think a slightly better than a 50-50 chance. Maybe a deal could be worked out for an extension beyond the remaining years on Castellanos' contract....so he can get a salary bump once Votto's deal is off the books.
9:45
Based on Castellanos' comments today, he is definitely factoring possible labor tensions into his opt-out decision.  I also wonder if some of the recent extensions we've seen in the last few weeks have been inspired in part by free agents worried about getting caught up in a roster freeze
Aaron Boone
9:46
Am I going to get fired it I lose on Tuesday?
Mark P
9:47
There hasn't been much out of the front office to suggest that Boone is anything but safe.

9:48
Mariners fan for life- do they better 90 wins next year? #Believe
Mark P
9:49
In a division where the A's might be taking a step back, and considering the Mariners have a lot of payroll space and a willingness to win....I can see it
I'll hold off until, you know, a bit later than hours after the end of the regular season to lock in an official prediction.  But the future looks bright for the M's

Angels have to go all in on Scherzer right? Will they ever learn that they need elite pitching? Not Anthony rendon?
Mark P
9:51
In fairness to the Angels, they were willing to give a huge deal to Gerrit Cole, but he simply preferred to go to New York.

9:51
Any chance the White Sox make a big splash in free agency?
Mark P
9:52
I don't see why the Sox wouldn't be inspired to keeping building on this year's successful core.
Rays
9:53
Does it help us that the Yankees and Red Sox had to go all in this weekend and play Tuesday or does it not matter much this time of year?
Mark P
9:53
Shouldn't be much of an issue.

How did the '22 draft order for the 77-85 teams get decided?
Mark P
9:55
For context: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/2022-amateur-draft-order-establ...

The tiebreaker is the previous year's record.  The Tigers were worse than the Angels and Mets in 2020, so Detroit picks 12th.  Since LAA and NYM had the same record in 2020, they then go back to 2019, when the Angels had the worse record, and thus get the 13th pick while the Mets get #14

Do the Orioles draft Elijah Green?
Mark P
9:56
Green seems to be the current favorite as the first overall pick, but obviously a ton can happen in the next several months before the draft.

Given how the O's have prioritized spreading their pool money around in recent drafts, I wonder if they'll pass on a high-profile guy like Green in order to take a more "signable" (i.e. below-slot) player at 1-1
Who’s your pick?
9:57
To play in the series?
Mark P
9:57
My preseason pick of Dodgers/Yankees is still valid, though I don't have a ton of faith in it at the moment.

Can we all agree that the idea of having Ohtani be a closer/DH in the future is dumb? (MLB Network was talking about it today) Logistically, too many game situations where it doesn't work.
Mark P
9:59
That's a problem for the future.  Right now, the Angels should be enjoying the spectacle of Ohtani as a front-of-the-rotation starter

Can the Padres get to the level they want while carrying guys like Hosmer? I can't see the team being successful again when it starts someone who brings no value.
Mark P
10:01
The Padres' problem is that Hosmer isn't their only problem.  A big chunk of SD's payroll was invested in several players who provided little to no production in 2021, whether it was because of injury or just lack of performance
