You'd think, but the Royals have managed with very little production there in recent years. I really thought Merrifield would get the gig, but I suppose he's still around if need be.
Kinda surprised KC didn't get a few more veteran types in camp -- Aaron Hill say.

2:25
what would a Josh Donaldson extension look like after 2017 if he puts up similar numbers as 2015/2016?
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
He is already 31. On the other hand, Miguel Cabrera would be a legitimate comp in terms of on-field value.
Steve
2:26
Not to judge spring stats too closely but would you still be comfortable starting Maybin over Revere?
Jeffrey Todd

Platoon, adjust as needed

When Tilson was traded from STL to CHW, the scouting reports I read called him a 4th OF. Is he more than that now, and if so, why>
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
Nobody knows because he has been hurt the whole time. Clearly the Sox think there's at least a chance he's more and want to give him a shot to find out.

What are the Dodgers thinking with their rotation? It is Kershaw and the M*A*S*H unit. Maea, Ryu, McCarthy, Kazmir and Wood are mediocre veterans with health issues. Are they going to put guys like Urias and Stewart off for another year or more?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
It's sneaky brilliant, really. Last week, I think, I said I feel it's the best staff in the game. They have so many waves of talent and so much depth stashed around. Really a fun experiment in some regards.
Any wise team would be careful with Urias. In LAD's case, they can just slow him (and other young guys) to start the year and ramp them up when it seems advisable.

The odds that the Cardinals and Molina get an extension done before opening day?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Always seemed pretty likely. After yesterday's report, I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen.

What do you think of the Reds likely going with Arroyo for the rotation?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Mostly, I love him for coming back and am glad we have another funky old school delivery in MLB with Ross Ohlendorf going to Japan.
2:33
But it makes sense for the org .... they need to get innings without relying too hard on the young guys, and he seems like a great veteran clubhouse type.

Does cardullo amarista or Adames get traded before springs over? Seems like there are only two spots left on the bench between these three
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Cardullo can just be stashed if he doesn't make it. If either of the others don't, they'd just end up being DFA'ed most likely. All are fringe 25-man guys.

After all these years a question of mine was finally answered!!! This must be what heaven feels like.
Jeffrey Todd

See?! There's hope for all.

I want a 4th OFer with CF capability. Who is a realistic shot on FA market. We know Pagan has balked, but Stubbs or de Aza make sense?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
I mean, Stubbs is a righty so he'd pair with Inciarte and/or Markakis, and they are familiar with him. On the other hand ... he really hasn't shown much of late. I'm guessing ATL is waiting to see if something interesting shakes out in the next couple days.

Can I realistically earn a September call-up this year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Yes
Red sox fan 1
2:37
Do you think the depth @ 3b can be something to be worried about as a red sox fan? Panda as the starter with rutledge seems to scare me
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
Fair to worry, but basically every team ever has at least one spot where there's at least that much concern. Can always pivot mid-year.
I mean, shouldn't you be more worried over Price and Thornburg?!

whats your read on nats closer
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
I feel like they want to give it to Glover.
But if Craig Kimbrel can be traded on Opening Day eve, then so can David Robertson or Sean Doolittle, say.
Phil B
2:39
So the Brewers couldn't get a low level lottery ticket prospect for scooter, or even a bag of bats for him?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
Nope. They got him to agree to a sub-projection arb deal because the alternative was being non-tendered. That he accepted shows you his agent's read of his situation. He's a platoon second baseman, and it's not like he crushes lefties. Just too many limitations as a player to be that valuable.

Has my rebuild stalled? Can I be sure that my bosses are fully supportive?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
Traded the two biggest stars; can't imagine there's cold feet now.
Well the Nats do seem to be stalling ...
@MarkZuckerman
Who's your closer, Dusty? "Can't say yet. We're still in the process. We'll let you know."

I recently realized something - the Texas Rangers (82-80 last years by Baseruns) have Yu Darvish, Cole Hamels, and...basically a tire fire after that in the rotation. Could you see the Rangers stumbling badly enough this year that they end up sellers at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
It's hard to imagine them selling given the veteran investments. But there's a clear downside scenario where it's just a pretty marginal team.
2:43
Of course, if Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner party like it's 2014 ... and some other things go well ... could be a danged good team.
2:44
Carlos Gomez, Profar/Gallo, Odor ... there's talent and some upside there, too.
