I also would add, shouldn't downplay the extent to which the Hoskins discovery matters. Nobody knew quite what he'd be. But with that output -- and the way he did it -- there's now reason to think they have a top-flight slugger who'll cost nothing for the next 3 yeas. That's huge. I think it impacts how they think about salary and other pieces. Timing, to an extent, too.

Any chance the Braves scandal touches not only John Hart but John Schuerholz?
Jeffrey Todd

Regardless of how far the league goes, the one thing nobody is talking about is that this team is owned by a big corporate entity. It's not a question of who's chummy with one rich old guy. Liberty Media has to answer to shareholders. And they have to disclose info publicly that other teams dont.

Does the Toddfather return to the Yankees next year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Could see a fit, sure. Say they can get him for a fair price on a two-year term ... he can play from the bench or share time with Bird at first if/when Torres is ready. Makes more sense than Moustakas.
Update for those that have asked ...

A pool filled with gold dubloons a la Scrooge McDuck?
What MLB team can you think of that has a pool ALREADY PREPARED to handle this situation???
2:24
Okay, I actually don't see a fit with ARZ b/c of the payroll. But I don't have much of a bead on where he could land, since the bat is good enough that some teams could move other pieces around to make room.

The Padres still don't have that Carlos Correa or Kris Bryant to lead their rebuild. Where can we get that?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
Same place those guys came from, most likely.
2:26
Of course, actually nailing your draft picks is easier said than done. And the same team that rightly took the first of those guys somehow passed on the second.

What do the Angels do to improve 2B and 3B this season?  Thanks!
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
I won't give you a name, but a process. There are so many possibilities out there, many of which could deliver solid veterans on limited years/dollars. They should knock on all the doors rather than picking a guy and running up the bidding (either FA or trade). It's actually a pretty good place to be in for LAA, I think, given the way they have tried to manage their combination of salary limitations, a picked-over farm, and the need to take advantage of Trout.

do the indians decline brantley's option now?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
I lean yes. There's just so much risk there. Think what they can do with the 13 mil (my estimate). Won't get them a guy capable of putting up 5 WAR, but they can add much-needed pieces around a core that they know is good enough to win.

With so many apparently bad contracts on the books, the Giants really don't have any choice but to blow past the tax threshold and spend big to try and compete, thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
See Angels. They can try to stay below the line, or go over. What they most need to take care to avoid, though, is continuing to add on to the long-term commitments. Even if they pay more in the near-term, don't go tacking on big contracts that run 2019 and beyond. (See eg Phillies, Tigers.)

Yanks eating a bunch of salary and trading Ellsbury?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Sure. I think Sherman suggested trying to pay him down to the 3/30 range. I don't think that's far enough.
AJ
2:32
Do you see Yelich being a better fit for the Cardinals than Stanton? And what would a package look like to get him?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Guess it depends what you're after. Very different players. Yelich is also less good but more valuable b/c of contract.
I don't think Yeli will come cheap. There would be lots of competition. I'd expect the Phillies and others to be hot after him.

Matt Harvey for Joc Pederson, who says no first? Seems like both could use a change of scenery. Dodgers need some right handed pitching. Harvey would seemingly love LA. And Joc seems like the perfect left handed platoon partner for Lagares.
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
You must be a Mets fan!
Joc's value is obviously down, but they aren't going to just give him away. Guy has hit in the majors.
2:34
(Harvey is basically worth his anticipated contract. He's not going to bring back a player with surplus value.)

How bright is the Yankees future considering their young roster, rookies in the minors and money coming off the books? Is this the early stages of a new Yankee dynasty?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Let's not forget what everyone was saying about the Cubs this time last year. The Yankees have a good thing going, but there's a lot in the way of a dynasty.
2:36
If that's even really possible in the same way it was previously for that organization.
2:37
Just to take one example, let's look at the rotation. What if Severino gets hurt? Tanaka opts out? Montgomery falls back? Gray never really rebounds? they make a big mistake on an expensive FA?
Ed
2:38
Has Masahiro Tanaka been dominant enough this postseason for him to opt out? Rumors had it he was staying in NYY, but now I'm not so sure.
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
As Steve Adams has been mentioning to me for some time now, it has seemed for some time now that Tanaka would opt out. (Or, at least, should from a market perspective.) It has nothing really to do with the postseason in particular.

Where are the potential fits for Tyler Chatwood? And what is the maximum he could get from a team?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Another plug for Steve ... he is bullish on Chatty's market. I answered this before at like 1/5-6 mil. Still see that as a possibility but I am increasingly open to Steve's reasoning (velo/GB/age).
Brandon
2:40
Do you see a front running team that could pry Jake Odorizzi away from the Rays? What type of prospects would do the trick?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
Sure, but I'm not certain they'd be after prospects so much as more controllable, MLB-level talent.
