What better way to spend Valentine's Day than baseball questions?!
Nats Fan
7:02
Who plays 3rd base for the Nationals this year?
Mark P
7:03
Some combination of Kieboom and Harrison, and obviously the Nats would love it if Kieboom starts to show that he can be at least a big league regular this early in his career.  Harrison provides some cover in that respect, and we also can't rule out Starlin Castro getting some time at the hot corner.
Dodgers

Hey are we done for the off-season,?
Mark P
7:03
Probably, barring some moves to lessen the luxury tax bill.

7:04
How concerned are you about White Sox rotation depth come playoff time?
Mark P
7:05
First things first, they need to get to the playoffs.  Not that Chicago hasn't put themselves in good position, bu Minnesota and Cleveland aren't just going away in the AL Central, and the wild card race will be competitive.

Should the White Sox advance, however, Giolito/Keuchel/Lynn is quite a solid top three.

Given a strange 2020 draft/minor league season how does that affect the value of PTBNLs?
Mark P
7:06
If I'm not mistaken, the rule is still that PTBNLs have to be identified within six months of a trade.  Wouldn't shock me if teams take closer to the long end of that six-month window in order to properly scout and evaluate prospects they didn't get a chance to see in 2020

Do you think the Reds could snag Chris Taylor from the Dodgers? $7.8mil for a bench bat seems like something the Dodgers may move and Reds still need a SS
Mark P
7:08
That would an interesting add for Cincinnati, but I kind of doubt L.A. is in any rush to make such a trade.  With Enrique Hernandez gone, Taylor is now lined up to take over the super-util role, and Taylor has a lot more experience than other bench options like Rios, Beaty, Neuse, or Lux.

Fair to say Çubs Darvish trade wasn't salary dump anymore?
Mark P
7:10
Uh, no, it was most definitely a salary dump.

I said this last week, but I wonder if Jed Hoyer is a little annoyed that he deals his best pitcher for salary relief only to have his owner go "my bad, turns out we have a few extra million to spend after all."
Jays
7:10
will this be our starting rotation to start the season, or will we add at least one more starter?
Mark P
7:11
Odorizzi or Walker would be good additions to a staff that I still think needs some work.  As presently composed, the Jays are putting a lot of trust in Ryu remaining healthy and effective, and then a lot of trust in a bunch of pitchers who weren't very good in 2020.

Is it possible for a player to sign a one million dollar contract with absurd incentives like “plays one game” that increases the contract by like 20 million? If so, wouldn’t the luxury tax hit only be one million since that is what is guaranteed?
Mark P
7:13
I don't know the particulars of the luxury tax rules, but I have to imagine there are some rules preventing those kinds of loopholes.
7:14
Plus, a star player capable of landing a $20MM deal wouldn't sign such a contract, since if he got hurt in Spring Training and didn't even play the one game, he'd be outta luck

Do yankees have role for andujar?
Mark P
7:16
Given how many Yankees have hit the IL over the last couple of years, we can't rule out Andujar still getting a good amount of playing time in 2021.  I realize the Yankees had a deep roster last year, but it still struck me as odd how they used him last year, since yo-yoing him back and forth between the big leagues and the training camp did nothing to help his development.

In your opinion Mark, how many teams are in serious financial difficulty, if any?
Mark P
7:18
Unless a team has an owner who has taken a big financial hit for some other business endeavor (i.e. the Wilpons in the Bernie Madoff scandal), nobody is losing money by owning a Major League Baseball team.  If any owner was in actual serious financial woe, they could make at least a cool billion by selling their team.

Are you surprised Mazara got 7.5 on a major league deal?
Mark P
7:19
To be clear, the Tigers only signed him for $1.75MM

What are the odds JBJ signs back with the Red Sox?
Mark P
7:21
Not great.  They seem to have their outfield picture pretty filled out, they're close to the luxury tax line, and there are other teams with more pressing CF needs.
jaysfan9293
7:22
hi, thoughts on whether the jays would be better off signing one of odorizzi / walker now or waiting for the trade deadline to see if they can shoot for say german marquez or chris bassitt?  the latter sounds better on paper but hoping the market breaks the ways you want to seems like a sketchy way of going about things.
Mark P
7:22
Technically, there's no reason they couldn't sign a pitcher now and ALSO look to add another at the deadline.
Angels
7:23
Are the Angels assuming Ohtani comes back healthy and that is their "top of the rotation pick up" for the offseason?
Mark P
7:24
I thinking "hoping" moreso than "assuming," since they can't consider Ohtani a sure thing after his last two seasons.  But if he gets back to 2018 form when healthy, that's a heck of a wild card for the Angels to unleash on the AL West

7:26
What is market for Mitchell Moreland like?  Not much news on him so far.
Mark P
7:27
The Tigers and Red Sox were the only teams linked to him, as per past reports.  If the NL gets the DH at some point in Spring Training, his market will open up

7:27
What is the deal with Seattle giving Giles a 2yr contract?  So basically they are paying him not to play in 2021?
Mark P
7:28
There have been a few of these two-year contracts to recent Tommy John patients, and essentially it's the team getting the pitcher on retainer.  He earns a minimum salary in the first year of the deal with the understanding that he'll miss most/all of it, and then a proper salary in the second year when he is healthy.

LA Dodgers resigning turner good or bad
Mark P

Adding Justin Turner makes your team better, period.  The Dodgers' deep roster got even deeper.

Thanks for answering our questions!  Chances of bounce-back years for Willie Calhoun and David Dahl?
