Is Robbie Ray going to strike out 20+ today?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:34
On pace for 27 Ks but I'll bet he won't make it out of the 5th. Nats crush lefties.
Cliff
4:34
How can the Dodgers convince AGon to go on a 10 day DL so we can keep Cody on the ML roster?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:35
I think Bellinger is staying either way. With A-Gon not 100%, it gives them an extra incentive to keep him around so he can play 1B 2-3 times per week when he's not in the OF.
Brian
4:36
Moncada is hitting .330 now, his OBP is .406 and OPS is .938. With numbers like that, does it matter what his strikeout rate is?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:38
In regards to how that translates to the Majors, it matters a lot. The strikeouts will only increase when he's consistently facing really good pitching.

4:38
Do you see the Mets trading Harvey at the deadline they're out of it?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:41
I'm sure they'll shop him. More likely to be have enough interest if he's pitching well over an 8-10 start span. Contending teams will be willing to pay up for the hot hand.

Is Danny Espinosa playing himself out of the starting 2b job for the Angels? He has his strikeout average is .393. He has 37 strikeouts and 16 hits in 94 atbats and he is hitting for a .160 batting average.
AvatarJason Martinez
4:43
They got him for his defense and power and he's currently not hitting enough HRs to make up for the Ks and .160 BA. Problem is that they don't really have any better options.
Ray
4:44
What is it going to take to get profae for the pads he needs a change of scenery and he's still young
AvatarJason Martinez
4:45
I'm sure his value will rebound if he hits in AAA while playing every day. If he stayed in the minors for the remainder of the season (or all but a couple weeks, I think), he'll be under control for an extra year. That would really pique the Padres' interest because they'd have him from 2018-20. I doubt that would happen, but it would certainly boost his value.

What player do you think will be generating the most buzz at the deadline? If you had to make an educated guess...
AvatarJason Martinez
4:49
If teams like the Giants and Blue Jays don't rebound from their slow starts, I can see guys like Stroman and Cueto getting shopped. Same for the Rangers and Yu Darvish.
Mitt
4:49
The Marlins want to compete, from where I see it lacks a starting pitcher and a first base. What would it take to bring Danny Duffy and Eric Hosmer
AvatarJason Martinez
4:49
Whatever it is, they don't have it. One of the weakest farm systems in baseball.
Sean
4:50
Do you think Tyler Beede will get called up soon?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:51
Barring an injury, no. Ty Blach has been very good in his 2 starts. I think he will get the call at some point in 2017, though.

4:53
Amateur Draft question - do you see Oakland drafting Jeren Kendall out of Vanderbilt? They need a Center fielder and leadoff hitter badly.
AvatarJason Martinez
4:53
Sure, but I don't think teams draft based on current need. It's rare that a guy is ready right away and even those that appear close now could take longer than expected. Most teams are drafting best player available on their board.
Nugget McGinty
4:53
Could Cowart possibly be a solution for the Halos at 2b? He's raking in AAA, and probably would at least provide a better avg than Espinosa
AvatarJason Martinez
4:54
Don't think so. I think he's had enough chances and he hasn't hit in the Majors. If they're going to take away Espinosa's defense, they need a lot more offense than Cowart would likely provide.
Mike Illitch
4:56
What is Al Avila doing? We have no c.f. and no bullpen?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:56
Don't think he had a lot of resources ($ or prospects) this offseason and I think the team is good enough that it was worth giving them one more shot to compete before tearing it all down and rebuilding. With that said, I thought he could've done more to improve the bullpen.

4:57
How long have I got until ownership hires the next Pads general manager?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:57
Pretty long leash, but need to be over .500 in 2019.

See anyone as the favorite for Robert -- or anyone's guess between the four or five teams that keep getting mentioned?
AvatarJason Martinez
4:59
Not a lot of rumors surrounding these types of deals. All pretty quiet aside from who is working him out and who can't sign him for whatever reason.

Odds I'm still closing games in August?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:00
1% chance. More likely you'll be pitching in a setup role on a contender.
Drew

IF Yu is on the trade block this summer, would he be the hottest name out there? More than Quintana?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:01
Yes. Bigger name. Ability to carry a team in the playoffs. Wouldn't cost as much because he'll be a 2-3 month rental.
Rule 5 Card Stud
5:04
Which Rule 5 guys do you think will stick with their ML teams all season?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:04
Padres will keep all 3. Covey will stay with the Sox. If the Braves and Blue Jays aren't in the playoff hunt, they'll active Rivero and Sparkman at some point and they'd have a good chance to stick.

and speaking of Options...is there an easy way to understand options? Quack up and down like a yo yo, and all the talk about Betencourt being out of options, yet now he is back in the minors...??? mai kowjai

Once a player is on the 40-man roster, they can be optioned to the minors in 3 separate seasons. Players who are added to the 40-man roster early in their pro career (not sure of the exact number of years off the top of my head) can qualify for a 4th option. Minor Leaguers who miss a season due to injury could also qualify for a 4th option. If an optioned player isn't in the Minors for more than 20 days total during the season, the option doesn't count.
Bethancourt was out of options, so he couldn't be optioned again. Therefore, they placed him on waivers. He went unclaimed and he was "outrighted" to the minors. He's no longer on the 40-man roster.

Looks like Giants will be sellers, who do you think they trade?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:12
Don't think they'll look to trade anyone until at least early July. If they do, I can see Cueto being the big name being shopped. Maybe Eduardo Nuñez and a reliever or two (Kontos, Strickland). No need to rebuild. Their core players are still in their prime. And owed a lot of $, which lowers their trade value.

With Hamels out for 2 months, should the Rangers look to be sellers this trade deadline?
