They're the best team in the NL since the break and are within striking distance of the Wild Card, so they figured "let's go for it."

I don't think they'll make it, but I don't blame them for trying. The only thing they really lost out on was whatever return they'd have gotten for Boone Logan, which isn't all that great a loss. CarGo and Blackmon will still have plenty of offseason value if they want to explore trades then

Seems weird since he hasn't been hitting despite playing in one of the best offensive environments in pro baseball. Seems to me like they said "Sorry about Lucroy, Jeffress and Smith ..... BUT LOOK OVER HERE. SHINY!"

Was Zach Duke a good pickup?

Yeah I liked the move for the Cards -- Duke was hilariously underpaid relative to other free agent relievers when he signed his initial contract. His 2014 season with Milwaukee was outrageous. Lots of Ks, lots of grounders, death on lefties and not totally useless against righties -- he's a nice add to STL's bullpen, especially since they dealt from an area of huge depth
