Gavin Lee
7:00
Welcome to another live chat! Sorry for the delay, but we'll get started in just a few minutes.

Spurgeon a good deal? Most say overpay, but this guy earned it and might be the most underrated defenseman in the NHL
Gavin Lee
7:20
It probably looks bad over the second half of the deal, but if Minnesota wanted to stay competitive they needed to keep Spurgeon.
As you say, he's one of the most underrated defensemen in the NHL (think how Mark Stone was/is considered) and a huge part of that Wild team.
7:21
If I was Guerin I might want to tear it down and Spurgeon would have been a great start to that process, but it's clearly not what Leipold wants or what he brought in the new GM to do.
7:22
The interesting part is what it does for the market next summer
7:23
Lots of really good defensemen on the last year of their deal.
Pietrangelo, Schultz, Barrie, Krug, Vatanen, Faulk, Brodie, Muzzin, Josi etc, etc, etc.

Hey Gavin!  I assume the Faulk to the Ducks deal is dead at this point.  Does Anaheim try to get another right shot D in the next couple of weeks?  Do you think Ristolainen is a strong possibility?  Who else if not?  I read that Columbus has a lot of D and might be looking to move one.. thanks!
Gavin Lee
7:32
It does sound like the Anaheim deal is dead, though obviously anything can change.
There were just too many obstacles there.
7:33
I think Anaheim will be in on right-handed D, but I'm not convinced that Ristolainen will be moved until Buffalo is at least positive that Brandon Montour is ready to come back, and even then he might be held onto for a while.
7:34
Columbus is definitely one to watch because of how many they have, but Anaheim won't be the only team involved if Murray or Savard get put on the block.
To be frank, Anaheim dodged a bullet with the Faulk deal.
7:35
I wouldn't be trading Kase at this point, especially not for a player that you'll have to overpay to get signed right away.

If Byfuglien retires does the rest of this years contract go to him or does it come off books and back into Winnipeg's salary cap which is listed at over $15 million according to Cap Trac?
Gavin Lee
7:36
If he retires he forfeits the rest of his contract, which includes $8MM in salary ($7.6MM in cap space) this season.
What may happen though is that the team "suspends" him to give him more time to decide, which would only take it off the books temporarily.
7:37
The Jets wouldn't be able to use all that space in case he decides to report, at which point the full hit would be dropped back onto their cap
7:38
At this point in the Laine/Connor negotiations I'm not sure if they even need the whole $15MM anyway, since it looks more and more like at least Laine will be signed to a bridge deal (if anything)
If they do however, moving Byfuglien off the roster for a short period may actually help.
7:39
It would definitely help them protect against offer sheets, though I think that period has kind of passed.

I'm trying to figure out what Carolina is doing.  Why sign so many D?  There must be 9.
Gavin Lee
7:41
van Riemsdyk is hurt to start the year, but yeah they have a ton of capable defensemen.
The Gardiner contract was probably just jumping on value
They can take their time now with Faulk and find a good return, while not missing a beat even if they get hit with injury after they move him.
7:42
I love the depth they've gathered.
Claesson probably clears if waived at the end of training camp, but you probably keep him until TvR is back anyway as the 8th defenseman.
7:43
Would bet there's another move at some point during the year to open a spot for Jake Bean, but Carolina holds all the cards right now.
Kings
7:43
Any hope for the Kings ?
Gavin Lee
7:43
They'll be better this year, but unless Adrian Kempe takes a huge step forward I doubt they'll make the playoffs.
7:44
Don't think it will be that long though. Lots of talent already gathered in the cupboard, and I imagine they'll end up with a bunch more picks at the end of the year again.

7:44
If they can't get a suitable player for Faulk is he worth a number one pick?
Gavin Lee
7:45
At the deadline when a team knows their pick will be in the bottom-third of the first round, probably.
I imagine they move him earlier than that, but it would probably be for a player/prospect instead.
Can't risk giving up a lottery pick for Justin Faulk.
Kings part 2
7:46
Any chance they cam move Carter or Quick
Gavin Lee
7:47
Tough, tough contracts to move.
Those weird "Carter will retire if traded" reports probably scare off most teams.
And trading for a 33-year old goalie with four years left and has dealt with injury recently...tough.
