Tigers Offseason Chat

This chat will begin in one hour at 12 Eastern/11 Central. But feel free to drop a question in advance.
11:59
Okay, sports fans, welcome to the Tigers offseason chat.
12:00
Thankfully, the 2022 nightmare is over, right?

Do you think we see more changes (firings) in the front office (David Chadd, Scott Bream, etc)? If so, when will those start to come out?
Darragh McDonald
12:01
I will get my annoying cop-out answer out of the way off the top. Scott Harris just got the job a month ago and has never been a president of baseball operations before. So, myself and others can only infer so much about how he'll operate.
12:02
That being said, he didn't hesitate to dismiss amateur scouting director Scott Pleis, who was fired a couple of weeks ago.
12:03
My guess would be he wants to get his team in place as soon as possible. So, if there are more firings to come, they will probably come soon. Though that's just a guess.

The rebuild has imploded. What’s the first move the Tigers need to make in the off-season?
Darragh McDonald
12:04
My guess is they will be fairly conservative this year. Waiting until the next offseason makes sense for a handful of reasons.
12:05
First, they can give Greene, Torkelson and other young players another year to see if they adjust and find their footing.
They can wait and see how all their injured pitchers recover.
12:06
And 2023 is the last guaranteed year for Miggy, which means he's off the roster and his money is off the books.

12:06
Do you feel due to non-tenders the Tigers will have a significantly small arbitration class?
Darragh McDonald
12:06
It won't be huge. Candelario has the largest projection at 7MM, and he could be non-tendered after his rough season.
Spencer Cabrera
12:08
Are the Tigers likely to trade of any big pieces for help in offence or pitching?

12:09
Are the Tigers targeting stars or prospects this off-season
Darragh McDonald
12:09
I'd be very surprised if they made any big, bold moves this winter, whether that's a big signing or a big trade.
12:10
The guys with the most trade value are the young ones, who they will surely want to hang onto.
Maglio Ordonez
12:11
How did the hitting on this team regress so much? I know that there were some rookies and that some of the hitters have terrible approaches and swings (looking at you, Javy Baez), but I felt as though this team should have been at least middle of the pack. What happened? Bad coaching? Bad analytics? Some other variables?
Darragh McDonald
12:12
This is an excellent question and I wish I had a quick and easy answer.
I think approach has to at least be a significant part of it. They were second-last in walk rate, with only the White Sox below them.
12:13
As to their analytics and coaching, it's hard me to say since I'm not in the clubhouse. But hopefully that's something the new regime will look into.

12:14
Do the Tigers tear it down and rebuild? And does that start with trading Baez?
Darragh McDonald
12:15
I don't know how much trade value he has right now.
12:16
He has an opt-out after 2023. If another team trades for him and he has an amazing bounceback season, he could trigger than and be gone after one year. Given that risk, who would give up meaningful pieces to get him?
*trigger that
I think they have to just hope he has that bounceback in Detroit.

Who do you see the Tigers pursuing for catching depth?
Darragh McDonald
12:18
I would guess veteran types who have solid reputations but aren't going to cost much.
Roberto Perez, Austin Hedges, guys like that.

It kills me to even write this, but would the Tigers consider eating Miggy,
Darragh McDonald
12:19
I don't think it's completely out of the question. The Angels cut Pujols last year.
But it also depends what kind of season the Tigers are having. If they're well out of contention again in 2023, there's little harm in letting him finish with dignity.

12:20
What kind of off-season moves, do you think the Tigers will make this winter? Do you think they will move on from Candelario at 3rd base, or sign him to a more club friendly deal?
Darragh McDonald
12:21
I guess they move on, though he could always re-sign at a lower rate like you suggested.
12:23
The third base market is pretty thin, in terms of free agents. But they could try out some depth guys or a waiver claim.

12:23
Given that every thing went wrong in 2022 and the actually talent in place? Couldn't the Tigers have a significant rebound in 2023?
Darragh McDonald
12:24
I think it's hard to see given that the rotation is in such rough shape.
Mize won't be ready for spring, same for Skubal most likely.
12:25
Manning's situation is kinda unclear. Turnbull should be back, but an unknown quantity after missing this year.
