MLBTR Chat with Steve Adams 3-8-16

Steve Adams
3:13
Have spent all morning writing Offseason Reviews for the Indians and Twins, which is astounding when considering that neither team did virtually anything this winter! Look for those in the coming days, but for now, let's chat and such.

3:13
When and where will David Freese sign and for how much?
Steve Adams
3:14
Probably whenever/wherever an injury creates a need for a third baseman, at this point. I'm pretty shocked he's out there, but there weren't a lot of glaring third-base needs this winter, and those that had them (hi there, White Sox/Angels) went the trade route. He should still get a semi-respectable salary, though -- I'd imagine in the $5-8MM range.
Mike
3:14
Alvarez a fit in Baltimore?
Steve Adams
3:15
I can't wrap my head around the organization thinking it was a better idea to give Alvarez $5.75MM and play Trumbo in right field than to just give $8MM to Austin Jackson to play in right while keeping Trumbo far away from a glove. Maybe they're planning on Davis in right field, which would probably be a better option, but it's still not ideal.

Lucroy traded before opening day? who's the most likely suitor?
Steve Adams
3:16
Guessing July at this point.
AK
3:16
If the A's fall well out of contention, can you see the Cub's putting together a package to try and acquire Sonny Gray?
Steve Adams
3:18
If the A's are in the cellar come July, I'd imagine the Cubs and about 10 other clubs will come calling on Sonny Gray. Doesn't mean the A's will be motivated to move him. He'll have 3.5 years of club control remaining, and I don't imagine the extra half-season of control he's lost will have dramatically altered the thinking with Beane and Forst. I'll never rule out the A's trading virtually anyone, but I get the feeling that Sonny Gray is going to become the new Giancarlo Stanton -- a player that is incessantly mentioned in trade rumors but never actually all that close to being traded.

You like Cleveland's "solution" to their OF problem, or should they have dipped into their system and made a trade for a major league quality player?
Steve Adams
3:19
Cleveland didn't come up with any sort of solution to its outfield problem. Their outfield situation, I think, is the single most glaring unaddressed need of any contender this offseason, with the possible exception of the Halos' second base mess. (Sorry, Johnny Giavotella and Cliff Pennington.)

3:20
Have even heard Cardinal fans mention Freeman and Aybar in same sentence. Adams, Flaherty, Pham, Ohlman, and the taking of Bourn contract get it done?
Steve Adams
3:20
Nope.
Freeman's not going anywhere, and if he did, you'd need to part with considerably more talent than that. No way Coppolella doesn't start off by asking about MLB arms like Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha.

3:21
What happens to the Free Agent Prediction Contest if Morneau or Freese don't sign until after the season starts? Or if they only get minor league deals?
Steve Adams
3:21
It sadly drags on into the season, which was the case a few years back when Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales weren't off the board until May and June, respectively.
Andrew
3:21
Elvis Andrus for Matt Holliday
Steve Adams
3:22
Why would the Cardinals take on that much additional salary to replace Peralta for half a season? I recognize that Rangers fans desperately want to be rid of Andrus' deal, but that scenario isn't realistic.

3:22
Any chance the Reds trade Voto this season
Steve Adams
3:24
I'm sure Jocketty and Williams will be open to listening this summer, but it's going to come down to Votto himself. He has full no-trade protection and recently told the media that he hopes to remain in Cincinnati through all the rebuilding. It's a tough contract to sell in the first place, no matter how great a year Votto is having, and those comments cast further doubt on it. I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon.

Do either Tyler Glasnow or Jameson Taillon make the Pirates' opening day roster?
Steve Adams
3:25
Taillon has barely pitched in two calendar years. He's not going to jump right into an MLB rotation. Glasnow has a case to do so, but the Pirates show each year that they're willing to keep their top prospects in the minors until mid- or late June in order to prevent Super Two status and buy an extra year of club control. I imagine that, barring an injury, that'll be the case again. They'll go Cole, Liriano, Niese, Locke and Vogelsong to open the year.

With Pedroia blocking Moncada's spot at 2B, where do you see Moncada playing when he reaches the majors?
Steve Adams
3:27
Outfield, third base -- maybe second if Pedroia is injured. I doubt the Sox are all that worried about it. All the reports on Moncada said he was athletic enough to handle multiple positions, and if he's forcing his way onto the roster in any capacity in mid-2017 or early 2018, that'll be a good problem for them to have.

3:27
Is Ruben Tejada a fit in St. Louis? What could the Mets get in return?
Steve Adams
3:29
He'd be a considerably better defensive option than Jedd Gyorko, who should in no way be considered a long-term option at the position. Mets wouldn't get much of anything in return -- a warm body from the lower levels of the Cardinals' minor league system plus the salary relief associated with moving Tejada.

3:29
Ryan Raburn recently signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies. Earlier this offseason, the Red Sox inked Chris Young to a 2-year, $13 million deal. Besides a small age difference, both players seem pretty comparable as outfielders who hit left-handed pitching well. Why such a big difference in their new contracts?
Steve Adams
3:31
Young can much more capably play the outfield, is younger and can handle center from time to time if needed. I agree, though, that the discrepancy between their contracts is strange. I was surprised that Raburn's $3MM option wasn't picked up, and I'm more surprised he had to settle for a minor league deal. It shows the benefit of signing early in the offseason for any free agent; if you're left waiting in February, you're almost always going to be looking at a crappy contract. Raburn was probably a lot of teams' Plan C, Plan D, etc., but I'm still surprised he didn't get $3MM or so somewhere.
For what it's worth, I think the Sox overpaid for CBY, too.

What kinda money and years is Matt Weiters looking at next off-season? Is there a recent comparison?
Steve Adams
3:33
It's entirely dependent on the type of health and production he shows, but if he has a typical Wieters season and is back to catching consecutive games with regularity, I'd expect him to land at least in the Brian McCann/Russell Martin range of 5/80.

3:34
Who would you say has a better fastball Ray Black from the Giants or Nick Burdi from the Twins?
Steve Adams
3:35
They both get 80s from scouts -- can we call it a push? Question should be who has better control of said fastball and who has better secondary offerings, because that's going to determine which one has a better big league career. Edge seems to be in Burdi's favor on both of those.

3:35
Would Angel Pagan to the Angels make sense if the Giants paid a bulk of the salary? Opens up spot for Mac Williamson and gives Angels a real major leaguer finally in LF.
Steve Adams
3:36
Sure, but if the Giants were sold on Williamson as an everyday option in 2016 would they have signed Span in the first place? I'm not so sure they're as bullish on Williamson and Parker as many Giants fans are.
JP
3:36
What do you think of the Austin Jackson signing?
Steve Adams
3:38
Steal for the White Sox and one of the best pickups of the entire offseason. Jackson doesn't have to do all that much to be worth such a marginal sum, but his track record says he'll drastically outearn that salary. I can't believe the Orioles, Angels, Indians, etc. weren't willing or able to go beyond that point. I'd have preferred a Jackson signing for the Rockies to their Gerardo Parra addition, as well. Could still have traded Dickerson, would be better off defensively, save some money, have more lineup balance, etc.

It seems like Lincecum's missed much of a shot at a starting job by not yet even scheduling his showcase. Any scuttlebut on what the delay's about and/or what he's thinking his options might be at this point?
Steve Adams
3:40
There will always be clubs with rotation vacancies or clubs willing to boot their fifth starter to take a flier on someone with Lincecum's upside. I don't know what the specific holdup in his showcase is. I don't think anyone really does, as all that's ever reported is that it's pushed back. If he's not healthy enough to take the mound, though, (or at least not healthy enough to do so in impressive fashion) there's no point in making a bad impression on the clubs that show up.
3:41
Padres and Marlins are continually linked to him despite not having auditioned yet, and I'd imagine that if and when he is healthy enough for a showcase, we'll hear of other teams with interest. There are 150 rotation spots around the league -- Lincecum will find one eventually. (Especially when you consider how many of those starters are probably going to be injured this month)
