Jeffrey Todd

Hey! Ask some questions, and I shall do my best to answer them.
2:44
Before we get rolling in earnest, I wanted to note for those who haven't heard: we are saying bye-bye to the podcast.
Will allow for more focus on original writing for the site. But who knows, maybe we'll do some one-off episodes here and there.
Chris
2:45
Throughts on Junior Guerra as possible trade chip?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
He'd have to build up more of a track record, and he's got gobs of control left, so doesn't seem terribly likely.
Jeff
2:45
Is Julio Urias up for good now, or is this just a spot start for the time being?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
No indication from team yet, but it wouldn't be too surprising if it went either way. He could make a couple starts and then move into some kind of long man role, perhaps piggybacking with another starter so he has consistent and managed innings

Are the braves going to trade Teheran? Viz?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
It's an interesting question, especially with both performing. I expect you'll see some discussion of that on the website in the next couple days. For me, the expectation is both are available but only at a fairly steep price.
Hi jeff

Buster Olney has really been promoting the idea of the cubs acquiring Andrew miller from the Yankees. Does this potential deal hold merit and what would the Cubs have to give?
Jeffrey Todd
2:49
They'd certainly be on the list of plausible partners if Miller is made available. And the two teams lined up on a deal involving two controllable pieces over the offseason (Castro-Warren), so they were able to work out that general type of agreement. But it's premature to call any single team a favorite, imo, let alone to know much about Miller's availability.

Is Giolito still going to be called up this year or is the magic 8 ball pointing to no?
Jeffrey Todd
2:50
Trending a bit towards "no," as things stand, but there's a lot of time for things to change. Performance of Ross/Roark/pen means there's no need at the moment. Who knows, maybe he's a relatively late call-up and throws from the bullpen? Could still factor in, for sure.
Given his messy start to the year at Double-A, though, he's not exactly forcing his way up at the moment.

2:50
With Benintendi's recent promotion and play do you see him maybe getting some plate appearance in the majors later in the year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
Not likely that they'll rush him up, but something like what the Dodgers did last year with Seager isn't out of the question.

2:51
Do you think the Brewers are more likely to resign Chris Carter or deal him away?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
Well, he's under control via arb and is certainly trending toward being a pretty easy tender at present. I do think that he'll be dangled, but they don't have to deal. That's a good spot to be in.
Jacob
2:52
Can the Indians find an upgrade over Mike Napoli?
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
Not terribly likely. They paid him to take the spot, and he's been underwhelming but hardly a problem. Maybe a platoon mate to share time, though.

2:53
How good would Ryan Braun look in a red sox uniform? Probably wouldn't cost much prospect wise with his contract.
Jeffrey Todd
2:54
I'm not so sure about that. What would he be looking at in free agency? Health/PED past is a concern, as is lack of defense, but the guy just plain hits. I mean, we're not talking Moncada/Benintendi, but I don't think the Brewers will sell him short just to cut loose all the cash.

2:54
Do you think Leonys Martin will approach 25-30 homers, barring injury?
Jeffrey Todd
2:55
That's way over where I'd set the line. But he has popped a dozen in 260 PA at Triple-A before, so reaching 20 wouldn't be a surprise at this point.

2:55
Hi Todd do you think the Phillies can or will stay above ..500 all year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
They have the resources to do so, if they are willing to take on salary and maybe give up a few assets for some additions. And if the pitching holds up. I'd still be surprised if they are a real contender, but I guess I wouldn't be totally shocked at this point if they end up around .500, though that seems more like a ceiling.

2:57
Sorry to see the podcast go! What kind of trade value could the Phillies expect to get from impending FAs, like Carlos Ruiz and Jeremy Hellickson? Or, are there more likely players the Phillies would move?
Jeffrey Todd
2:57
Thanks! Was fun while it lasted.
2:58
So ... this is the other side of the coin, the sell scenario. Your best case with a guy like Hellickson - pending FA, not super cheap, questionable track record - is something like the Feldman deal. But that's a crazy pie in the sky scenario, because Arrieta is a rare bird. Still, he could return some legit value if they move him.
Less so Ruiz.

Considering the upcoming weak FA class we should expect a robust trade market this summer. But looking at the non contenders I don't see many quality targets. What's going to happen? Major sellers market?
Jeffrey Todd
2:59
Hard to make global guesses, but teams holding obvious trade chips could be in a nice spot, yeah. Maybe we'll see some more interesting, lateral trades in the Cespedes-for-Lester mold?
Ricky
3:00
Any Justin Morneau updates? And do you see anyone taking a chance on him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Crickets. But if he can show he's healthy, then sure.
Paul
3:01
Do you guys ever break news?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Occasionally, but it's not our primary function.
Jeff
3:01
Do the Twins have any solid trade chip that they are putting out there?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Plouffe looks like the clearest possible trade chip, though it's still unclear if they'll look to move him.
Ed
3:02
Do you see Shields opting out? The FA class is awful and he'd be at the top. If he does opt out the Padres will have 3 more first round picks next year(Cashner QO) and should allow Preller to really overhaul the farm
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
Hard to know - guys at his stage tend to have personal reasons that go beyond simple dollars and cents. Maybe his family is committed to San Diego; maybe he'd rather play elsewhere. Don't really know. From a pure market standpoint, it looks like he'd be in position to go back to the market, though hanging a QO on him would weigh him down a good bit.
