Steve Adams
3:07
Greetings! Start sending in some questions and I'll begin answering them momentarily. Gonna run and pour my sad, caffeine-addicted self yet more coffee.
Ian Desmond
3:08
Is the #11 pick in this years draft worth more than me?
Steve Adams
3:09
In a vacuum, no. If we're talking Ian Desmond on a fringe contender and playing somewhere other than first base, sure, make the move and make other win-now moves accordingly.

The problem is the Rockies are mitigating his value by playing him out of position and at a spot where his bat is below the league average relative to his positional peers.
That, and the five-year, $70MM term is also steep. Generally speaking, I don't like the move for them.
Evan B.
3:09
What moves (besides a dozier trade) are next for the Minnesota Twins?
Steve Adams
3:10
I don't think Dozier is traded until this summer at this point. They'll add a bargain reliever, possibly two, that could potentially be flipped this summer and will soften the need to rush guys like Chargois, Burdi and Reed up from Double-A/Triple-A (though Chargois could open the year with the team).
3:11
If there's a cheap enough bargain to be had on the Napoli/Brandon Moss etc. front, I can see them jumping in there as well.
On a more minor note, they make a lot of sense for a Brett Eibner claim if he hits waivers, and they'll have top priority.
Zach
3:11
Anything new on the cubs besides Anderson?
Steve Adams
3:12
I'd imagine this is the only type of move you'll see for the rest of the winter -- tinkering with the back of the rotation and the bullpen mix a bit. If Anderson passes the physical, then you might just be looking at some non-roster invites for swingman types and bench bats.
Zealin
3:12
Who is better, Hundley or Brown? For backup catcher
Steve Adams
3:13
I'd rather have Hundley back there, but it doesn't matter all that much given Hundley's guarantee. They can DFA him without blinking at any point if he's not producing and they want to give Brown another look.

Are the Orioles front runners for Borne and Hunter?
Steve Adams
3:15
Are there really "front-runners" for Michael Bourn and Tommy Hunter? I think both guys are just fishing around hoping to get a Major League deal. Either could land in Baltimore, but the Blue Jays, Twins, Giants, and a bunch of other teams could make sense for Bourn on a cheap deal. Bullpen arms are even tougher to predict.
Ryan
3:15
Will the Reds sign a cheap starting Pitcher?
Steve Adams
3:17
I wouldn't mind them adding Doug Fister on a cheap one-year deal or something now that Straily is gone. Lots of injury risk and uncertainty in their current mix. Hopefully they aim higher than last year's Alfredo Simon debacle if they go that route. Colby Lewis, Scott Feldman or Jorge de la Rosa could work there.

With the unfortunate passing of Ventura, does this greatly affect the Royals chance to contend or do they have enough pitching depth to mitigate this loss?
Steve Adams
3:18
It feels cold to look at this situation through this lens right now, but the Royals already are, I'm sure (or will be quite soon). I didn't love their pitching depth in the first place, though I very much liked their pick up of four years of Karns for one of Dyson. I think they'd be wise to add some more depth, even if it's just a swingman type like Yusmeiro Petit for a couple million bucks or something.
Phillies
3:19
WTH are we doing? Why would we spend money on Benoit and Saunders? Nobody is going to give something good for either guy at the deadline and we're going to suck this year. Why not use that money down the road when we aren't as terrible instead of dumping it down the drain on a maybe done old pitcher and an always-injured, now defensively limited OF?
Steve Adams
3:21
The better question is what you're upset about. Saunders was a monster in the first half last season and has always been reasonably productive when healthy. He was also a year removed from major knee surgery and playing half his games on turf. Distancing himself from that operation and getting onto natural surface could very well keep him fresher for the second half, and the only guy he's somewhat blocking is Altherr, who's already 26 and hasn't shown much in the Majors.

Teams give up too much for relievers at the deadline every single year, and Phillies fans should know that perfectly well after getting an actual prospect for a declining Jonathan Papelbon.

Both of those signings were fine by me.

Have we secretly and quietly had the best off-season this year? Mallex, de Leon great long term pieces and Ramos could be a good value
Steve Adams
3:22
I'm not a huge Mallex Smith guy and like Drew Smyly quite a bit despite last year's HR spike, so I don't love that deal. De Leon was a nice pull for Forsythe, albeit a risk-laden one (as any one-for-one swap for a pitching prospect is going to be). The Ramos deal was great, and I like the cheap signing of Tolleson.
3:23
Curious to see what they'll do now with $7MM freed up and an easy means of creating space for a bat at first base. They could add Moss, Carter or Napoli there on a cheap-ish one-year deal that would deepen the lineup nicely.
Andrew
3:23
With possible exception of Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, have we seen the end of 7-10 year deals?
Steve Adams
3:25
Nope. They'll never go away, they'll just have more early opt-outs in them now. The market is going to continue to grow and thrive, especially as more teams sign billion-dollar TV deals and exploit their local governments for unnecessary new stadiums.
Orioles
3:25
Should we sign wieters or is it time to move on?
Steve Adams
3:25
If they were going to sign Wieters they wouldn't have signed Welington Castillo

Valbuena getting paid as much as yunel? yunel is getting traded right?
Steve Adams
3:26
Wouldn't shock me -- not like he's ever had a long stay in one spot. But there isn't a huge market for third base help, as evidenced by the fact that Valbuena just signed somewhere that already had an everyday third baseman.
Brian Dozier
3:27
If the Rays got De Leon for Forsythe, wouldn't my return be better?
Steve Adams
3:27
The Twins wanted it to be (and rightfully so), which is why Dozier is still in Minneapolis.
Scott
3:27
What do the Royal do to fill the void of Ventura? As of now here is how the rotation would project. 1.Duffy 2. Kennedy 3. Vargas 4. Karns and 5. Chris Young/Mike Minor/ Jake Junis
Steve Adams
3:28
Don't forget Matt Strahm (who I think should open the year in the rotation), but yes, they'll probably add some low-cost starting depth.
Tony
3:28
Are the Pirates front runners to land Jose Quintana?
Steve Adams
3:29
I don't think he's going to be traded before Opening Day at this point unless another suitor suddenly emerges
Buddy
3:29
So where does Chris Carter land?
Steve Adams
3:30
My guess at this point: Tampa Bay
Sluggah

Sergio Romo: closer for a noncontender or setup for a contender?
Steve Adams
3:30
I don't think anyone's going to sign him and just hand him the ninth inning -- contender or not.

Any chance the angels sign Matt wieters?
