Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/30/18
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
2:57
Greetings world. Let's discuss things that have (and, sigh, still have not) happened.
2:58
Or hell, any other topic you fancy, since there've been like 4 things that happened in baseball over the past week since our last chat.
Jared
2:58
Will the Astros go after Tony Watson?
Steve Adams
2:59
If they really loved him, I kind of feel like they'd have just signed him by now -- or at least that there'd be more smoke connecting the two. Maybe they'll jump in if his price drops, but if he's still trying to get a three-year deal I doubt it. I never thought he was especially deserving of that type of contract.

Who’s moved in Milwaukee OF? Would Boston be interested Braun for fallback on JD? Thanks
Steve Adams
3:00
Braun has a full no-trade clause and has all but said in the past that the only team he'd really want to approve a move for would be the Dodgers

Do you think the Cardinals will trade for Archer (or another good SP)?
Steve Adams
3:00
I think they already made their biggest trade of the offseason with Ozuna.
And I don't think Archer will be traded anywhere before Opening Day
Rock
3:01
which pitcher will the Brewers get?
Steve Adams
3:01
Probably one that more or less falls into their laps -- I don't think they're going to beat the market for Darvish or Arrieta, but if those guys sign and Cobb is left with a diminished asking price, the Brewers will oblige
Jared
3:02
Do you think Colin McHugh will be traded by Astros or be long man in bullpen?
Steve Adams
3:03
The Astros aren't the type of team that thinks "hey we have too many of X asset (pitchers, in this instance), so we need to trade one to clear space." They'll be happy to have McHugh for the depth he brings unless someone makes them a decent offer, I would think.

Generally, there don't seem to be too many teams that think "We have a surplus so we need to move one of these guys just to free up space."

3:04
Do the Giants have any wiggle room to add some bullpen depth?
Steve Adams
3:04
There'll be a whole bunch of guys getting DFAed as free agent sign in the next few weeks. Can just add some league-min depth via waivers, given that they're second in waiver priority behind the Tigers.

Will the Cub's sign a premier starter before the season begins or go with what they have and save some cash for next year's off season ? Go Cubbies !!
Steve Adams
3:06
I guess it depends on your definition of "premier" -- I'm not convinced it's Darvish or Arrieta, but I'm fairly convinced they'll add a starter.

Salazar for Santana makes too much sense for both sides not to happen,  doesn't it?
Steve Adams
3:06
There's some sense to it, but Salazar is coming off a couple of injury wrecked seasons and Santana isn't a very good option in center field, so I don't know that it's some kind of fait accompli
Ryan K
3:07
Do people realize that the Brewers rotation will be the Death of them?
Steve Adams
3:08
Well, this isn't the group they're going to take into the season, for one, so there's no point in judging it right now.

A combination of Anderson, Davies and Chacin is serviceable enough, and there are enough options for a fifth guy (plus the impending FA signing/trade that will eventually take place) to hold things down until Nelson returns that I think they're in decent shape if they add someone else.
They have plenty of younger guys that could take a step forward, too -- Brandon Woodruff perhaps chief among them now that Hader is bullpen-bound to open the season.

If Darvish really is waiting on the Dodgers, should Twins just turns their focus elsewhere?
Steve Adams
3:09
Not if they think Darvish is the clear best option on the market, which they do. (And which he is)

It's not like the other SPs are getting impatient and signing elsewhere.
3:10
Sorry, Internet cut out there for a minute
3:11
second time that's happened today -- weird
LOGJAM
3:11
When will the logjam end?  I'm sure MLBTR's add revnues are great because you're getting so many more hits than normal because no one will sign anybody.  Is MLBTR colluding with teams to slow down hot stove season to boost add revenues?  Be honest.
Steve Adams
3:11
We make more money when things are actually happening, because when things happen, traffic is higher
3:12
(Obviously I know that was a joke, ha, but the logic behind it was weird -- trust me, I'd much prefer to actually have some news to help these painstakingly slow days go by)
Scott
3:12
Are the Twins really in on Darvish?
Steve Adams
3:12
They have been all offseason.
Drew W
3:12
Do you think the A's will be able to flip Brandon Moss?
Steve Adams
3:12
Nope.
3:13
Any team that wants a left-handed-hitting 1B/OF/DH can just sign someone in free agency for way less.
Steve
3:13
Is there any market for Moustakas left? Will he wind up back in KC or does someone come in with a reasonable offer?
Steve Adams
3:14
It doesn't seem like there was ever a huge one to begin with. I'm kind of lamenting the fact that we let ourselves predict five years for him even though no one at MLBTR really liked him or saw any logic to the deal. It was just kind of, "Well Boras usually gets his guys paid, he hit a lot of HRs, he's still young -- let's ignore the OBP, knee injury, defensive questions, etc."

That's the one prediction we made that I'd take a mulligan on.

I could see him going back to KC -- especially if Hoz signs in San Diego.

3:15
Which outfielder should I trade to open up a slot for Winker since ownership won't let me trade Billy Hamilton
Steve Adams
3:16
I don't know that you really NEED to trade anyone. If Duvall and Schebler get less playing time because you need to get Winker everyday ABs, then so be it. Winker has more club control and is more a part of the future than either of them (or Hamilton). Plus, injuries and other things tend to allow logjams of this nature to sort themselves out organically.
Dave
3:16
Moustakas makes sense for Atlanta, why is his market so quiet?
Steve Adams
3:17
Because he has a .305 career OBP and was at .314 last season in a career year, and his defense at the hot corner isn't good enough to compensate for the poor on-base skills.

His biggest selling point is that he hit a bunch of dingers last year in a season where everyone hit a bunch of dingers.
