Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/24/17

I think part of the reason they traded for AJ Ramos was so they could get a comparable arm on a one-year commitment rather than sign a free-agent reliever to a longer-term deal. I don't expect Reed to land back in Queens.
AJ

Thank you so, so, so much for doing these chats while I’m in my Applied Ethics lecture
Steve Adams
4:27
That is precisely why I schedule them at this time.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES CARDINALS GET STANTON AND HOSMER?
Steve Adams
4:28
THEY ARE NOT GOOD. LIKE NONEXISTENT.

But I can see them getting one of the two if that makes you feel better. Or JD Martinez. Or virtually any middle-of-the-order bat that is available this winter. They're going to add someone notable.

The Pirates need to dump salary. Cervelli, Harrison and McCutchon are their highest salarys. Can they get any return on any of the three?
Steve Adams
4:29
Cutch and Harrison have surplus value on their deals. I'm not so sure Cervelli does coming off such a lackluster and injury-filled season.

Phillies trade for G Cole
Steve Adams
4:29
They'd target players with more than two years of team control remaining if they were looking to add to the rotation.

4:30
What could the Rays get for Adeiny Hechavarria?
Steve Adams
4:31
Not much. They didn't have to really give up much to get him, and he's more expensive now. He's a great glove, but if you want an all-defense SS just go sign Alcides Escobar. Or call the Tigers about Jose Iglesias. (The fact that there are two readily available and largely comparable alternatives further illustrates that his value isn't exactly sky-high.)

What do you expect Brandon Morrow to get this offseason? Do you think a team may try him as their closer?
Steve Adams
4:33
Morrow is this year's Ryan Madson. He's an absolute monster and will probably be compensated as such despite the injury risk. I would imagine that yes, some teams will have interest in him as a closer. Cubs, Twins, Rockies, Nats could all conceivably offer a ninth-inning role to him.

4:34
Don't you think trading MadBum this offseason is the best option the Giants have moving forward. His value has to be more now than next July when the Giants are 12 behind Dodgers, Dbacks, and Rockies again.
Steve Adams
4:35
I think his value would be higher mid-season when other clubs are more desperate and when he (hopefully) has another three months of solid pitching in his back pocket and further distance from the idiotic dirt bike debacle.

Any chance you guys can get a chat option/button that allows you to scroll to the top of the chat?  Thanks.

It's a third-party software that we license, but I can certainly present that idea to the developers at Jotcast for an added feature. Certainly seems useful.
Certainly were a lot of certainly-s in that sentence.

Who do you like in the World Series?
Steve Adams
4:37
I'm picking the Astros but admittedly have no great reason for doing so. Two really good teams.
Let's see what everyone thinks! Why not
4:38
Who will win the World Series?

Those Dodgers, Steve. You'd better believe they're gonna do it. (45.9% | 72 votes)

The Astros will win, Steve. This much is certainly clear. (54.1% | 85 votes)

What are the chances cardinals get nicasio and a good closer?
Steve Adams
4:39
I don't think they're going to spend heavily on two relievers when there are other needs to address. I'd think if they pay Nicasio, it's going to be him and a lower-cost flyer on someone like Yoshihisa Hirano (or a trade pickup) to compete for the ninth-inning role.

Am I the right guy to right the ship in Detroit, or am I a placeholder for the post-rebuild phase?
Steve Adams
4:40
If the Tigers are showing positive progress in 2020, he'll probably get extended, but there's a definite "two years and you're out" possibility with this signing. I hope he gets the chance to stick around beyond that, personally.

Yoshihisa Hirano- Umm who is this?

Jaime Garcia, Miguel Gonzalez plus resigning and Tillman on a 1 year deal feasible for the Orioles?
Steve Adams
4:42
It's feasible, but gross. That'd be an underwhelming rotation.
Steve B, hi Steve A
4:42
Will the Cubs resign Duensing?  I think they should, he had a good year.
Steve Adams
4:42
I don't see why they won't look into it. Cost won't be exorbitant and he was, as you said, quite good there.
Boston
4:42
Theoretically, could the Red Sox surprise everyone by making a free agent splash to upgrade their rotation? Otani? Darvish?
Steve Adams
4:43
I think they're going to be much more focused on the lineup. And adding Darvish gives them three pitchers making $20MM+ for the next few years, which seems unpalatable for any club.

4:43
Who do the Tigers trade this offseason
Steve Adams
4:43
Ian Kinsler, maybe Shane Greene and Alex Wilson.
