Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/25/17

Angels, Brewers, Blue Jays all have needs at second base and make some sense. Injuries can always create a new opening as well. Mets make some sense, too, if they want to play Asdrubal at 3B and spend more aggressively elsewhere (bullpen, outfield)

If Hart is gone and Moore steps in, what kinds of offseason moves do you see him making to the Braves?
Steve Adams
7:52
I don't think Moore is stepping in even if Hart does go.

What do the Mets do this offseason? Sign Dickey and Frazier or Nunez? Payroll is supposedly coming down and they have lots of holes.
Steve Adams
7:54
Dickey has all but said he's only going to play for a team close to his home in Nashville, and the Mets don't fall into that bucket. I do think they'd be wise to pursue an innings eater of that ilk -- just someone they can rely on to take the ball and not entirely suck. Jason Vargas maybe.
Bartolo! Another option of course. Even Ricky Nolasco if they think he can put up a 4.40 and just eat 190 innings.

What would it take for the Cardinals to land Archer? Flaherty + Bader/O'Neill possibly?
Steve Adams
7:56
You're still way light. Archer's deal is, in my eyes, one of the 2-3 best pitcher contracts in all of baseball. The Rays have him for $33.75MM over the next four years, with only two of them being guaranteed. It's an even friendlier version of Quintana's deal.

And it's so friendly that I don't see any chance the Rays realistically move him this winter.

Riskiest free agent to sign this winter?
Steve Adams
7:58
The answer is basically always going to be one of the top pitchers. Darvish is 31 and is going to get 6-7 years, taking him through his age-36 or 37 season. Arrieta has tons of warning signs, will pitch next year at 32 and is going to command a huge annual salary. Tanaka had the elbow scare a couple of years ago and has his homer issues.
7:59
I do think there's also a good deal of risk in JDM and Hosmer, as both will be looking for $130MM+, and Martinez's defensive value is questionable at best, while Hosmer has only had two really great seasons at the plate.

What’s your favorite color?
Steve Adams
7:59
Excellent question. It is green.
Yu Darvish
7:59
Why so much hype over Arrietta? Why am I not the rumor darling? I AM in the World Series, after all. I also don't come with a probable QO. And don't give me no schtick about my Tommy John surgery. I've done enough to prove that's behind me.
Steve Adams
8:00
MLBTR has had Darvish ranked above Arrieta pretty much all season, and the two aren't going to be close in terms of projected contract on our Top 50 Free Agent list next week.

Nick Senzel time frame??? Cincy starter by the close of 2018??
Steve Adams
8:00
Yeah I think he'll be a regular for them by the end of the year, barring injuries.
Probably at second base.
(Unless Suarez gets hurt)

(Ok I'm done)

thoughts on this? Kinsler for Travis, Morales, and a prospect... Tigers get younger (albeit health issues) and a prospect in exchange for eating the extra year on Morales
Steve Adams
8:02
As ever, it'd depend on the identity of the prospect you threw in there, but jettisoning Kinsler's $11MM to pay $22MM for Kendrys and reacquire an injury-prone 2B that has never shown he can stay on the field doesn't seem like a good way to further their rebuild. Plus Travis only has three years of control left himself.

Sure thing Tanaka opts out?
Steve Adams
8:04
I've been of the mind that he'll opt out since about July, and his strong finish and big October performance don't change that thinking
Whooooooooo
8:04
Do you think the Cubs would rather have Cobb at 3/35 or Arrieta at 3/75?
Steve Adams
8:05
If Arrieta would take 3/75 I think a whole lot of teams would be in on him. Got to take that over Cobb at 3/35 in my eyes. Cobb was trending up at season's end, but durability will always be a concern, and he wasn't exactly dominant this year.
Adam
8:05
Will ATL be barred from resigning Maitan if MLB takes him away?
Steve Adams
8:06
I don't think anyone has a very good feel for whether they're truly at risk of losing him, but I'd imagine that yeah, if he's taken away the Braves would also not be able to spend a bunch to just re-sign him.
Alex Cobb
8:06
Why do people think I'm going to be a bargain? lol
Steve Adams
8:06
I'm more confused as to why people seem to think he's as good as he was in 2014. He wasn't this season -- not by a long shot. Seems like more name value than actual on-field value. He was solid, but not great. I wouldn't want to go 4/48 on him, but I think that's probably in the range he'll end up

Are the Twins gonna be over .500 next year or are they gonna be typical Minnesota sportz?
Steve Adams
8:08
They topped .500 this year despite their pitching staff being composed entirely of smoke and mirrors. I expect Falvey and Levine to add multiple arms to help legitimize the staff, and I think they'll get better (or at least more consistent) full-season results out of Buxton, Sano, Kepler and Polanco.

Hey, Steve. Thanks for all the chat, as always.

Do you have an approximate prediction for Eduardo Nunez's contract? Asking as a Jays fan.
Steve Adams
8:09
Depends who you ask -- Jeff likes him on a three-year deal I think, but Tim and I are more in the 2/14 range. He's a nice player, but he's a bat-first utility guy that isn't great at any one position and will be coming off a knee injury. I could see him slipping as far as $10-12MM over two years, depending on what we learn about the health of his knee in the coming weeks.
