Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/29/24
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
8:35
Good morning! We're potentially just 24 hours from the start of the 2024-25 offseason, as the Dodgers have the Yankees on the ropes with a 3-0 series lead. Lots to talk about. We'll get started at 3pm CT today, but as always, leave a question(s) ahead of time if you like!
Darragh McDonald
2:47
Testing testing.
2:49
Hey, everyone. Steve has to bail due to a personal issue. I'll take over and will start the chat at 3pm Central, as planned.

Your attention, please ... now batting for Adams, #10292024, Darragh McDonald!
Darragh McDonald
2:57
What the heck is the manager thinking?!
Seriously though, one of Steve's kids is not feeling well, so send good vibes towards Minnesota.

Should we expect the top 50 free agent list to be released this coming Sunday or Monday? Will it be free for non subscribers?
Darragh McDonald
2:58
It will be free for everyone, yes.
2:59
And it depends on how long the World Series goes. We will wait until we get all the info about qualifying offers, options, opt-outs, etc. before publishing.
3:00
I think we've agreed that Monday will be the earliest publishing, even if the Dodgers finish it off tonight.
3:01
Sorry, phone call. Gong show day at MLBTR, apparently.

This will mark the third time I have asked this question and hopefully it will get an answer.
What good is paying for a subscription if your question doesn’t get answered Who do you think the Pirates will hire to be their next hitting coach?
Darragh McDonald
3:02
We don't have any inside info on that.
And honestly, I don't think it matters much.
3:03
I think fans overstate the importance of hitting coaches. Every player has personal hitting instructors these days. The team's hitting coach can only influence them so much.
3:04
I recently saw Andrew Stoeten, great Blue Jays blogger, made this excellent point. If hitting coaches were as influential as people think, teams would have bidding wars for them. But they don't do that. They move around like musical chairs.

3:06
Will the chisox be sold to a Nashville owner so they can move there?
Darragh McDonald
3:06
Personally, I think the recent news is all a bluff by Reinsdorf.
He wants public money for a new stadium and hasn't gotten it yet. He dangled the threat of relocation to get Guaranteed Rate built back in the days and is using the same playbook.
Chandler
3:07
Willy Adames to the Braves 5/150?
Darragh McDonald
3:07
It makes some sense but Anthopoulos never does the thing that makes sense.
3:08
He'll do something that nobody expected, like trading for J.P. Crawford by taking the Haniger and Garver contracts away from Seattle.
Of course, now that I said that, it will be something else.
Are we spending?
3:09
Red Sox need pitching! Assuming the Sox will spend, how realistic do you think it would be for them to sign Fried and a Buehler or Bieber? I think a Fried, Giolito, Bieber , Bello and Houck would be pretty good. You would move Crawford to long relief or a depth starter.  Then sign Tanner Scott and maybe a Hoffman for the pen. Find a strong righty bat and they are set. Am I dreaming?
Darragh McDonald
3:10
I do think the Sox are going to spend this winter. I know Boston fans are probably skeptical after the "full throttle" thing last year, but I think there are good reasons to expect different this time.
3:11
Even if payroll stays flat, they have about $50MM to play with. And I think they are tired of being sorta mid. Both Breslow and Kennedy made some recent comments that suggested they want to be more aggressive. With the prospects coming, it's a good time for it.
3:13
I think the scenario you laid out is vaguely plausible. I wouldn't pin my hopes on any one player or a string of specific players, but a strong starting pitcher  like Fried or someone else is definitely believable.
3:14
With guys like Buehler or Bieber, you could make a case for almost any team and the Sox would be one of them, sure.
A big relief signing is also possible with Kenley and Martin hitting free agency.
Kevin
3:15
In your opinion, what are the odds that Roki Sasaki is made available to sign with a MLB team this winter?
Darragh McDonald
3:15
I'd be pretty surprised. He'd be leaving millions on the table by not waiting two more years.
Per the league rules, you're an "amateur" until you're 25 years old and have six seasons in a foreign league.
3:16
Yamamoto waited until he was 25 and got over 300 mil. Sasaki would be limited to a signing bonus of the 6-8 million range max.
3:17
It's possible he doesn't care. Ohtani went this route, so it's been done before, but I'd bet against it.

3:17
Who do you think is the biggest name traded this offseason?
Darragh McDonald
3:17
Crochet.
Yastrzemski will be literally the biggest name traded, however.
3:18
But Crochet is almost a lock to be traded and he's a borderline ace, so he's the real guess.
Weak NL Central
3:18
With both STL & Chi apparently resetting next year, who steps up to challenge the Brewers? Can Cincy step up their game enough to be the challenger? Pittsburg is well, just Pittsburg.
