Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 11/14/17

Steve Adams

Greetings! GM Meetings are underway, hot stove-y things are happening, players are free agents and all kinds of offseason-ish things are on the horizon. Let's collectively rejoice.
And chat. We can chat, too.

Should the Pirates pursue Tyler Chatwood?
Steve Adams
3:13
Absolutely, but there'll be a lot of teams on him. Between his velocity, ground-ball tendencies and lack of hard contact, I think he's going to get a three-year deal. We put him at 3/20 on our Top 50, and I was pushing for more honestly. He's young, too -- I think he can get something like 3/30
But, the Bucs have less margin for error than most teams on that type of deal, so that may be more than they care to spend.

3:13
Giants seem to be aggressively pursuing Stanton. Thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:14
They can pursue him all they want -- I don't think they're a serious contender for him when they're this close to the luxury tax barrier and also have a weak farm system. Cardinals make much more sense, as do the Red Sox and Dodgers.
Will
3:14
Will we see a deal during the GM Meetings?
Steve Adams
3:16
There are usually a few early signings that get done here. Believe the Tigers got Victor Martinez at the GM Meetings three years ago. (Well -- re-signed him)

Marlon Byrd signed with the Phillies while I was there a few years ago. I doubt you'll see Darvish, JDM or any of the top names come off the board just yet though

3:16
Thoughts on the Mets-Carlos santana rumors?
Steve Adams
3:17
They have needs across the board -- if they feel they can flip Smith as part of a package for a tougher-to-obtain asset (be it a center fielder or young starting pitcher), then why not? They're exploring tons of scenarios, like a lot of teams. It's probably more due diligence than anything at this point, though.
Carlos Santana
3:17
Any chance I end up back in Cleveland next year??
Steve Adams
3:18
I don't think they're going to be willing to pay at the level he's going to command. He's at four years for me -- $14MM+ annually. Cleveland payroll is already pretty tight after picking up the options on Brantley and, to a lesser extent, on Tomlin.

3:18
Are the Dodgers the front runner for Otani?
Steve Adams
3:19
I don't think there's any real front-runner for him at this point. If you asked me to pick a team, I'd just go with one of the three AL clubs that can offer him the most money -- Rangers, Yankees and Twins.

Also, for the record (as we noted the other day) -- we've confirmed that he'll likely move forward with the "Ohtani" spelling of his last name in moving to American ball

We have not heard any major news so far at the GM meetings. Where is Stanton issue at ?
Steve Adams
3:20
There's rarely major news that breaks at the GM Meetings. It more serves as groundwork for tons of trade and free-agent talks -- many of which come to fruition a month from now at the Winter Meetings (Dec. 10-14).

What are the reds plans after another tough season
Steve Adams
3:23
Probably sign some fairly unexciting rotation depth (Jhoulys Chacin type?) and add a couple of upside bullpen plays late in the year. I don't think they're going to radically alter their course from last offseason. Could see them moving some combination of Hamilton, Duvall or Schebler. They'll want to get Winker into the lineup every day, get a longer look at Peraza as a SS option and also eventually get Senzel up in the Majors next year. 2019 seems like a more realistic year to expect things to come together for them.
Dick Williams
3:23
Brian Shaw setting up for Iggy?  Your thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:23
There'll be cheaper options for them to pursue -- though if Shaw is one of the relievers that's left looking for a contract in late January, maybe they can get him on a reasonable two-year deal. I don't think the Reds should beat the market and give any of these guys three years though.
AA
3:24
thoughts on the AA hiring in ATL? When do you see him making his first big move?
Steve Adams
3:25
I thought he kind of got a rough deal in Toronto so happy to see him get another shot. He's a good exec, and I love that he's not afraid to make some bold moves. Having GMs like him in the game keeps things fun.

That said, I don't know that the Braves will go nuts this winter just yet. Anthopoulos will still be learning the system, and we more often than not see that when a new front office leader takes over at the beginning of an offseason, they're more reserved in year one.
There are, of course, exceptions. (Hey there AJ Preller)
3:26
But I don't think AA is going to blow up the roster or farm. He'll try to dump Kemp/Markakis, add some bullpen pieces, some kind of innings eater, etc.

The the Nats plan on adding starting pitching?  If so who get's moved if anyone? Joe Ross?
Steve Adams
3:28
I fully expect them to add another starter -- and a pretty decent one. Not just a Jaime Garcia or Jeremy Hellickson type. They're basically all-in on 2018 for lack of a less hackneyed term to use. Harper, Murphy, Gio, Madson are free agents next winter,.. go for it now.

They don't need to move someone if they sign a starter. Ross had Tommy John surgery and is going to miss most of the 2018 season anyway. He'll be put on the 60-day DL as soon as Spring Training begins.

Brb one minute-- apologies

Will we see a FA face-off series this year? Something like Cozart vs. Frazier or Hosmer vs Santana? Those were interesting.
Steve Adams
3:30
Yeah we'll be doing those and Free Agent Profiles. I think Connor did a Free Agent Faceoff over the weekend, in fact.
3:31
He did!

Anyhow, yes we'll be doing some of those.

SP for BAL on opening day?
Steve Adams
3:31
Bundy -- they won't a higher-profile arm than him.

3:32
Should I trade Betances for Hand ?
Steve Adams
3:32
The Padres aren't going to trade two years of Hand for two years of a more expensive reliever.
If/when they trade Hand, it'll be for several young prospects they can control for five to six seasons.

Have we seen all i have to offer or do i just a need new scenery?
Steve Adams
3:34
I'm not much of a fan, but who knows? He does have some power, and changes to swing plane, launch-angle alterations etc. have resulted in some unpredictable breakouts. But he's never going to walk much and doesn't have any defensive value... he's a lesser version of Mark Trumbo which isn't a great thing to be.
Daryl

How bout a dark-horse landing spot for Cozart?
