Good morning all! Sorry for the lack of chat yesterday. With the Rule 5 deadline looming and plenty more in the news elsewhere, I opted to push back a day. We'll get started at 1pm CT. Looking forward to it!

Hello! Sorry to be a couple minutes behind. Let's get going

Does Cal Quantrill even make it to waivers?
Steve Adams
1:05
I assume the Guards tried unsuccessfully to trade him before moving to the DFA. It's always possible they felt there was a groundwork for a deal in place with a couple clubs and just made the DFA knowing the roster spot would soon be freeing up anyhow, but the DFA is likelier a sign of pretty tepid interest.

Quantrill had a nice ERA in 2021-22 but doesn't do a lot of things front offices like, even when he was at his best. Now he's had a shoulder injury and an ugly run of 99 innings this year. I won't be shocked if he clears waivers entirely and becomes a free agent. The trade value here is pretty minimal.

Extend Max Fried or trade him now?
Steve Adams
1:05
Can't it be neither? Keep him for 2024, make a QO, thank him for seven great years if he signs elsewhere, and collect your comp pick.

would the brewers trade burnes to the cardinals considering they’re division rivals?
Steve Adams
1:06
I doubt they'd make that swap, no, but the Cardinals could always try with a massive offer to force them into it. That said, it goes both ways. The Cardinals are probably even more reluctant to make the move, since they'd have to overpay in terms of young talent, and Milwaukee could have those guys for the next five, six years.

Don’t you think gio urshela makes sense for tigers as a veteran stop gap at third base?
Steve Adams
1:08
He makes sense for a lot of teams as a veteran stopgap at third base. Tigers are among them, sure, but Colt Keith is closer to the Majors than a lot of the top 3B prospects for other teams who'll be looking at GIo

Did Rangers prove “can’t buy a World Series” wrong? Seager. Siemen, Scherzer, DeGrom, etc, all cost prospects or money and they went from bottom to the top real fast.
Steve Adams
1:10
Speaking in absolutes in general is pretty silly. "Can't buy a World Series" (Rangers, 2009 Yankees to an extent)... "small market teams can't win" (Royals).

It's hard to win a World Series. In general, I think people take that difficulty and use it to fit the narratives they want. Of course you can spend insane amounts of money and instantly make yourselves a World Series contender. It can also blow up in your face, as it did for the Mets this year.

Is Joey ortiz enough for Corbin burnes?
Steve Adams
1:12
I don't think so, but maybe Matt Arnold feels differently. In general though, if the offer you're constructing for a top-tier trade target like Burnes consists of someone (or someoneS) who feel  largely superfluous to the current big league product, it's probably light.

That's not a knock on Ortiz -- more so just a comment on the depth the O's generally have in the infield.

I saw were Nola turned down 6-150 ???
Steve Adams
1:14
Jayson Stark suggested that the Phillies' spring offer might've been in that vicinity in his morning column today. There have been past suggestions that the Phillies were in the low to mid-100s as well. Nola was justifiably seeking 200+ at that point. I doubt he'll get the 200 now, but passing 150 or coming close to it is still totally feasible.
Gleyber Day
1:14
Gleyber Torres for Edward Cabrera. Who says no?
Steve Adams
1:15
I doubt the Marlins are giving up Cabrera for one year of an expensive (for them) second baseman when they already have Arraez as an option at 2B. Even if Gleyber could play SS, his status as a relatively pricey one-year rental makes that tough for Miami
Juan Soto
1:15
Will Christopher Morel be the Center piece for the Cubs to acquire Soto? Is there any chance of an extension for no matter who potentially acquires the generational talent of Juan Soto?
Steve Adams
1:16
I don't think Morel has sufficient value to be the centerpiece in a Soto trade.
Nor do I think Soto will sign an extension
Max Naka
1:16
Morel and Wesneski for Logan Gilbert?
Steve Adams
1:17
Not close for me. Would much rather have Gilbert.

Is there any sentiment around Major League Baseball that the Red Sox overpaid for Rafael Devers because the front office was being heavily criticized at the time?
Steve Adams
1:18
If anything, I think the contract was viewed in the opposite manner; it was a generally reasonable price point for a 26-year-old star.

Does Rhys Hoskins to Colorado on a one year deal make sense? Then if he has a good first half, (hopefully) flip him to a contender?
Steve Adams
1:20
Sure, but similar to the prior comment on Gio Urshela/Tigers, there's nothing unique about that fit. Hoskins on a short-term deal makes sense for a lot of clubs. And while you can rightly point out the allure of hitting at Coors Field, a free agent going there on a short-term deal may also have some trepidation. Beyond the fact that he'll probably have offers from contending clubs, there's also the worry of how he'll adjust to living/playing at altitude, which could impact his performance negatively.

Generally speaking, I think Hoskins signs two years with an opt-out and does so with a contending club.

No way Alek Manoah starts 2024 with Toronto right?
Steve Adams
1:20
I wouldn't say "no way," but I do think there's a pretty decent chance he's moved this winter

Do you have the leaderboard posted for the FA prediction contest
Steve Adams
1:21
Not yet. I'm not sure the timeline on that -- I'll ask Tim after the chat -- but I know it's in the works and shouldn't be long.
So far, everyone's tied!
Reds
1:21
Which is the greater possibility, sign Othani or trade for Soto? Neither isn't an answer!
Steve Adams
1:22
If I can't choose "neither," then the latter, ha. Soto has no say over where he's traded, so the Reds could just lose their minds and package a bunch of their young infielders and Andrew Abbott or something. The chances of the Reds convincing him to sign there and the Castellini family spending the money seem nonexistent.
1:23
(That said, the obvious answer is "neither," which you clearly know based on your framing of the question haha)
Rule 5 Question
1:24
So do teams need a vacancy on their 40 man to make a selection in the Rule 5 draft?  (or need to immediately designate someone)
Steve Adams
1:24
Need a vacancy yeah

1:24
Do the Orioles have enough for Corbin Burnes from Milwaukee?
Steve Adams
1:26
It's one year of Burnes and they're stacked with young talent. Of course they do. But Burnes isn't going to sign an extension -- or at least, no one hires Scott Boras less than two years from FA with the idea of doing so -- and I imagine the O's might balk at the asking price for one year, given the lengths they went to in order to build up that system

More likely for Braves- Sonny Gray or Aaron Nola?
