Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 2/11/20
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
3:20
Spring Training is here. Mookie Betts is a Dodger. Let's chat.
Dallas
3:21
Byrant to the Mets happens when?
Steve Adams
3:21
Gonna go out on a crazy limb and say the Wilpons aren't keen on paying the luxury tax. Ask again when he's a free agent in 18 months maybe?
My guy
3:22
Do the Blue Jays finish at or above .500 this year?
Steve Adams
3:22
I can see them finishing right around there with a mostly healthy season
Red sox
3:23
How improved is the farm system
Steve Adams
3:24
A little? Can't count Alex Verdugo since he's a big leaguer, so they basically added one high-end prospect in the Mookie deal (Jeter Downs).
Angels
3:24
Is the Joc Stripling trade completly dead ? I loved it for the Angel's
Steve Adams
3:25
Seems that way -- and hard to really love a trade when we don't even know all the would-be pieces.

“Cargo” Signs with mariners, what will his purpose be?
Steve Adams
3:26
As I said in that post -- he'll compete for the right field vacancy created by Mitch Haniger's injury. If he makes the club and hits well early in the year, he'd presumably be in the mix as a part-time corner OF/DH moving forward

Kirby Yates for Nick Senzel, who says no? And could this happen if more pieces were involved?
Steve Adams
3:27
One year of Yates is not fetching a half decade of Senzel
Twins
3:27
Is Maeda worth Graterol?
Steve Adams
3:29
The Twins added four affordable years of a quality starting pitcher. So many Twins fans seem to have fallen in love with Graterol for the velocity and top 100 rankings, but his stock dropped in 2019 when he missed time with a shoulder injury. I think it was a perfectly fine deal for them.

See the ranger acquiring a centerfielder or another RH bat?
Steve Adams
3:29
They're a reasonable fit for Kevin Pillar

What’s with all the hate on the Betts trade? I understand that nobody in Boston wants to lose a homegrown player who’s a generational talent, but he declared that he’d be testing free-agency regardless of what the Sox do. Why let him walk and get nothing in a year you’re likely not winning a title? Verdugo is a stud, and while I understand he has an injury history, his upside is sky-high. Downs is also all upside in my mind. As a Yankee fan I’m actually a little nervous about this deal long term. Not just because of the talent the Sox got back, but also because of the very real possibility that Boston could re-sign Betts a year from now.
Steve Adams
3:33
Because the Red Sox effectively punted on the 2020 season while ownership outright lied about prioritizing competitiveness over the luxury tax. It's crazy to me that a team worth that much (or any team, really) even cares about the luxury tax in the first place. They deserve ridicule for the process behind the trade, even if Verdugo/Downs is a sensible amount of long-term value to receive in return.

Anybody left who deserves an MLB deal?(aside Puig)
Steve Adams
3:35
Brock Holt should get one. I bet Kevin Pillar will, too. Taijuan Walker. Aaron Sanchez, depending on the state of his shoulder. Even if he's out, it wouldn't be nuts to do a Pineda/Smyly/Eovaldi deal for him.

T
e Rays'  Eovaldi deal -- 2/4 -- not the Red Sox one, ha.
The Rays*

Not sure what the heck happened theree

How do i know that this chat is real?
Steve Adams
3:36
Is anything real?
3:37
"Is this a camera? ....Is everything a camera?"

Ok let's not devolve into Rick & Morty quotes here. Back on track

Does any trade sending Bryant to Atlanta work or has AA reached the bottom of Liberty Media’s pockets?
Steve Adams
3:38
I don't expect a deal to happen there; I think their last big move (for the offseason, anyway) was adding Ozuna.
Perry Winkle
3:38
Is this reported playoff change designed just to prevent tanking?
Steve Adams
3:40
There's probably some of that to it. But as Jeff said in today's video, it could also disincentivize some teams from being aggressive. We already see clubs reluctant to "go for it" just to win a Wild Card berth. In the proposed setup, only one team in each league would be assured of a full playoff series.

Do you think Chase Anderson is a possibility for a cheap SP for Boston? Toronto has added a lot of other arms this offseason and have no room for Shoemaker when he gets back and the rest of the kids when they are ready.
Steve Adams
3:42
Nah -- I don't think they'll move Anderson already. They obviously like him, and the Jays aren't going to fret over having "too many" rotation pieces. Injuries and struggles will happen. They might want to limit some innings for guys coming back from injury. Etc. etc.

3:42
With Suarez on the shelf for a bit, does Moose get moved to 3rd temporarily, or do the Reds leave him there to acclimate?
Steve Adams
3:42
I'm sure they'll tinker with ideas in Spring Training, but if I'm making a prediction, I'd say he plays 3B while Suarez is out.
Alex
3:43
Yankees rotation is nothing but question marks after Cole, amirite?
Steve Adams
3:45
I don't think Tanaka's much of a question at all -- guy is solid and has averaged 30 starts over the past four seasons. I get calling Severino that for health reasons, but right now it seems as though he's healthy. That's a sharp 1-2-3, even with Paxton sidelined. Happ and whoever takes the fifth spot (Montgomery is my guess) feel a bit less certain though, yeah.

Who do we add now that Ohtani will not be ready until May?
Steve Adams
3:46
They've probably known this for awhile. Ohtani's knee injury slowed down his TJ rehab
