Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/2/18

Steve Adams
3:13
Greetings! Back from vacation and back to my regular chat schedule for the foreseeable future. Let us commence with the discussion of both stuff and things.
Allen

Should giants be concerned?
Steve Adams
3:15
No more so than they should've been entering the season. It was obvious that even with a healthy Bumgarner they were beyond extreme long shots to contend. With him and Shark on the shelf, I don't give them virtually any chance in the NL West. Sorry San Fran fans
Justin
3:15
Does Franklin Guttierez sign?
Steve Adams
3:15
I haven't heard or read anything on him in months. I'm not even 100% sure he's actively seeking a contract right now.
Andrew
3:16
Heard of anyone interested in Trayce Thompson?
Steve Adams
3:17
I actually asked a few people who'd know more on that yesterday but haven't heard back. It's been a week since his DFA, which technically means the window for a move is up. Something may well have already happened with him and just not been announced by the teams yet. I imagine we'll hear something today.

It's one start, but the Twins have to be happy with how Berrios started the season, right?
Steve Adams
3:18
I think any team is happy whenever one of its starters throws a shutout, so I will boldly answer: Yes indeed.

Thoughts on Gabe Kapler and his bullpen management?
Steve Adams
3:19
It's early, so I want to try to give him a break, but at the same time the Milner thing on Sunday was utterly indefensible. That simply can't happen. I also scratch my head at him pulling Nola at 68 pitches on Opening Day. I get that he's going to play matcnups starting with the third time through the order, and that's all well and good, but if you're not going to let a fresh Aaron Nola get to 70 pitches when you're up 5-0 -- that's going to be one hell of an overworked bullpen.
3:20
I assume they'll taxi guys from Lehigh to Philly all season to help keep the 'pen stocked with fresh arms, but I don't love the whole thing.

I looked really good last night. I've still got 5 yrs leaft!
Steve Adams
3:21
I hope Bartolo never retires.

3:21
Ordered the mlb package so I can watch the Orioles all year. Should I cancel that while I can?
Steve Adams
3:22
O's are in for a long season if Gausman doesn't pitch well and/or Tillman can't rebound. I don't think they really improved their rotation all that much from last season, honestly. It's better, but maybe by a couple of wins.
Brian Dozier
3:22
HAVE YOU ACCEPTED unwritten rules AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR
Steve Adams
3:23
Ha -- I'm Minnesota-born and have followed the Twins my whole life... and I think Dozier sounds like a maniac. It's especially hilarious that he's complaining about a bunt while the Twins were IN A SHIFT.
Kyle Tucker
3:23
Do I make my debut this summer?
Steve Adams
3:23
I think so, yeah

When do you think Acuña comes up?
Steve Adams

3:24
Any chance the nightmarish free agency mlb had this year leads to guys signing more quickly next off season?
Steve Adams
3:25
Maybe in a few instances, but it's always been the case that those who sign early get paid better. I suppose a few guys who are hoping for four-year deals might jump at a decent three-year offer early on, but I don't imagine we'll see guys taking crap deals in November because they're terrified of waiting it out -- especially with the top tier names.

Are you looking california or feeling minnesota?
Steve Adams
3:25
Honestly, I'm just feeling outshined.
Horace Clarke
3:25
Latest rumor has Showalter being replaced by Girardi before the All Star Break.
Steve Adams
3:26
I haven't seen that, and I'd be shocked if Buck is ousted in Baltimore unless he just doesn't want to keep managing after '18
Colin McHugh
3:26
How likely is it that I will be traded this year?
Steve Adams
3:27
There's no real reason for the Astros to trade him. He's a great long guy/sixth starter, he's not making ridiculous money, etc. If they got something that immediately improved the roster, maybe, but depth is extremely valuable. And it's not like McCullers is a workhorse in the rotation.
Cookie Monster
3:27
in three years is it Ramos, Shaw and Duggar in the Giants outfield?
Steve Adams
3:28
I think you have to assume that at least one of them flops or is just more of a bench guy. Never a great plan to bank on an entire group of prospects actually panning out. More often than not (much more often) you're going to be disappointed.
Stan Dupp or Syd Down
3:28
Could you please explain WAR to me in simple terms?
Steve Adams
3:29
In really, really rudimentary basic terms -- Player A is worth XXX more than a readily available Triple-A scrub who could be called up by any team in the league.
Royals
3:30
Do either of the recently DFA former Royal top prospects ever make an impact in the bigs?
Steve Adams
3:31
I think it just depends on whether they can ever stay healthy. Both Almonte and Zimmer -- especially Zimmer -- have just been decimated by injuries. I don't know that you can really count on either to be healthy enough to pan out. I'd bet against it, though hopefully I'm incorrect. ever really want to root for a kid to have his career wiped out by injuries.
Cole
3:31
Bigger year for the mets- Thor, or DeGrom
Steve Adams
3:32
I think Syndergaard is the better pitcher, but I'll vote deGrom simply because I'd project him for more innings after Noah's injury in 2017.
Cole
3:32
Jordan Hicks has looked good thus far for the cards- Can he keep it up?
Steve Adams
3:33
Guy skipped Double-A and Triple-A entirely. Stuff is huge, but you're looking at the tiniest of samples for a reliever less than a week into the season. I'd anticipate some growing pains.
