Steve Adams
8:24
Good morning! Same 1pm CT usual start time today, and as always, feel free to start sending questions ahead of time if you prefer. Talk to everyone in a few hours!
1:04
Sorry for the late start!
Let's get underway
Jo Adell
1:05
Angels will be happy they never traded me.
Steve Adams
1:06
Depends who they might've gotten at the time, but to your general point, I doubt they mind having him around right now. He's having a pretty nice breakout with greatly improved contact rates and greatly improved quality of contact.

hearing rumors Rowdy Tellez will NOT be on the roster at 6 40 PM tonight...any info/intel on this?
Steve Adams
1:08
I assume this was in reference to Jason Mackey from the Post-Gazette speculating as much during a radio hit this morning. He's since confirmed that Rowdy will remain with the team for today at least, but I'd be pretty surprised if they weren't considering a move there. .181/.250/.233 isn't cutting it. I didn't like the Tellez signing even when they inked him. At his best, he's an OBP liability with poor defense and 30-homer pop. He wasn't great all-around even when he hit 35 homers.

I suppose for the Pirates, they viewed that as their best chance at adding a potential 30-homer bat in their price range, but it just wasn't a move with a ton of upside.

Does the amount of "cash considerations" vary wildly or is it a narrow range? What might the narrow range be?
Steve Adams
1:09
Can be and has been as low as $1 in some trade instances, so yeah, there's a wide range
Cub Lament
1:10
Cubs have a crowded outfield with big money allocated to vets Bellinger, Suzuki, Happ.  Any possibility at all they can get Happ to waive his no-trade so they can move him in order to open up a spot for Pete Crow-Armstrong and a little bit down the road Owen Caissie?
Steve Adams
1:12
Even if Happ were playing well, I highly doubt they'd trade him during a season they're trying to compete. Injuries are inevitable. Bellinger and Suzuki have already missed time. The team's expectation is going to be that Bellinger opts out and clears the way for PCA to have a full-time role next season. It's not a scenario I feel is particularly plausible.

1:13
If the Royals continue to compete for the division, what type of deal(s) seem plausible for them to make at the trade deadline?
Steve Adams
1:16
Outfield help:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/the-royals-outfield-drought.htm...

Their outfield has been terrible since Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain left. There'll be plenty of veteran options on the trade market... Jesse Winker, Tommy Pham, Michael Conforto, maybe Tommy Edman if he's healthy by that point. The current group isn't producing enough -- not by a long shot

Could Hunter Harvey go back to Baltimore? Or do teams not usually want a guy that didn’t work out for them back after success elsewhere?
Steve Adams
1:22
Harvey's throwing harder than he did with Baltimore, he's healthier and he's changed up his pitch usage and the shape of his changeup. It's not like he's the same guy, just having some good luck. I'm sure they'd love to acquire him if the price is agreeable. If anything, there are probably a fair number of people in the org who predate the current GM and feel vindicated to see him thriving elsewhere.

I don't think the O's are necessarily more likely than any of the other contenders who'll be on the lookout for bullpen help, but I also can't imagine Mike Elias saying "No way. Been there, done that. Not interested."

Kody Clemens has been solid since the callup for Trea Turner's IL stint. Who is the odd man out when Trea is healthy? Whit release? Pache trade?
Steve Adams
1:24
Probably Clemens himself. He's been solid, as you said, but he's had 25 plate appearances. Turner said in early May he'd miss a minimum of six weeks. A lot can change in how Clemens looks between now and then -- and the track record here isn't great.

Also possible/likely there are other injuries that impact the infield/bench mix.

Is Wencel Perez legit?
Steve Adams
1:28
Like the plate discipline. Don't love the .366 average on balls in play, lack of consistently impactful contact. I think he can be a fine role player but doubt he has the power to be this type of bat in the long run. But a switch-hitter with good speed who can bounce around the diamond and make contact at a decent clip has the makings of good bench guuy

1:28
Is there a chance the Cards could look to ADD a lefty bat and back of the rotation starter instead of selling?
Steve Adams
1:30
If they're controlled beyond the current season, sure. They're going to need SP help again this winter, and the current mix of bats isn't getting it done.

In general, I think we'll see non-contending clubs continue to be more willing to add MLB-level players who can help them beyond the current season. I don't think that's going to mean someone who's making significant money in most cases, but if the Cards had the opportunity to acquire someone else's version of Alec Burleson or Nolan Gorman -- a big league bat who's just struggled to find consistency in his current environs -- that seems like something that'd be on the table.
Just Asking
1:30
Any chance White Sox just release Benintendi?
Steve Adams
1:30
Not with three years to go on the contract, but closer to its conclusion, sure. For now it's in their interest to try to get him back on track.
1:31
I didn't like the Benintendi deal when they signed it, but holy cow even I didn't think it could possibly go this badly.

How do you think the Orioles lineup looks next year?  Who is in the OF among Hays, Santander,  Mullins, Kjerstad, Stowers?  Are Mayo and Norby trade bait or on roster?  Assuming Holliday/Henderson/Mountcastle all locks
Steve Adams
1:35
I'd be surprised if they make a real push to re-sign Santander. He's a free agent and I expect he just signs elsewhere on a two- or three-year deal, depending how he finishes the season.

Hays seems like a guy they'd be willing to move or perhaps even non-tender, depending on whether he can get back on track. It's been a brutal season for him.

Something like Cowser-Mullins-Kjerstad seems viable. Stowers as a fourth OF, sure. I imagine Mayo will also eventually be a factor in the corner OF mix, but he could kind of bounce between the four corner spots early on once he's called up.

1:35
Is Syndergaard done? Doesn’t look like he’s even on a minors deal right now.
Steve Adams
1:38
He didn't sign anywhere this offseason. I think the big rush to call a guy "done" is always silly. I've been asked whether Syndergaard, Garrett Whitlock, Vlad Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Aaron Civale are "done" in the last like 6 minutes alone.

I didn't see much to like in Syndergaard's past several seasons, no. But guys reinvent themselves all the time. Rich Hill came back at like 35. Daniel Bard at 36. Erick Fedde was a non-tender who couldn't get a 40-man roster spot and now he looks like a legitimate No. 3-4 SP after revamping his repertoire in Korea.
1:39
If Syndergaard signed somewhere tomorrow and took the same approach and came out looking exactly like he did in 2022-23, I wouldn't have high hopes for him. But if he takes time to rest, get healthy, do a bunch of weighted-ball work and whatever else to get a bunch of the lost velo back, who knows? We've seen far more improbable comebacks
Ethan
1:40
How do you think the Guardians fill their open 40 man spot? Could Brad Keller come in on a minor league deal?
Steve Adams
1:42
Keller on a minor league deal wouldn't surprise me once he clears waivers, but that wouldn't fill their 40-man spot. I'm sure they'll claim someone or just select a contract that's not currently on the 40-man. Tommy Mace and Aaron Davenport aren't really big prospects but both are shoving as starters in Double-A. Doesn't need to be a big, grandiose addition from outside the org.
Matt
1:43
Who's your favorite prospect to make an impact this year who isn't Langford, Chourio, Holliday, Wood, or Skenes (The big preseason 5)
Steve Adams
1:44
As I've said in past chats, Jared Jones was my preseason ROY pick in the NL and I'm all aboard his hype train. Imanaga has been great as well, though debatable if he's a "prospect" as a 30-year-old with a long career of success in NPB.
Kyle
1:45
Thoughts on Andy Pages’s debut and Dodgers OF needs? .313 BABIP and 3.2% BB rate seems like he’s not legit. Obv could turn things around, and Outman and Taylor aren’t helping, but I wonder if the Dodgers try to snag an OF at the deadline along with a reliever
Steve Adams
1:46
Pages consistently walked at 11% or better in the minors. I think the early lack of discipline is surprising but also not something that'll prove to be a long-term concern. I think he's going to hit, and hit a lot for the Dodgers. I see him as a regular in their outfield over the long run.
All I do is Wynn, Wynn, Wynn
1:47
Fantastic defense + a better than expected bat at a premium defensive position. can I challenge Imanaga for RoY?
Steve Adams
1:48
Sure. I wouldn't call him a front-runner or anything right now, but we're not even a third through the season. If he starts finding some power and doesn't sacrifice much contact or anything, that's possible.
HAWKS
1:49
sorry im late. But Ian Happ does not have a no trade clause
Steve Adams
1:49
His extension came with a full no-trade
Jurickson pro so far
1:49
If Profar somehow keeps this up, what value will he have as a FA next year?
