Steve Adams

Greetings all -- sorry for the late start. Wanted to get the Rays' moves and Scherzer's return up on the site before kicking off.
I'll try to run through about 3:30 CT
Rocktober
2:30
What do you think the Rockies' haul will be for Story?
Steve Adams
2:31
Probably not what Rockies fans will hope, but Story isn't having his best year, has been injured, is a two-month rental and is on a notable salary. I'd expect one above-average prospect and some lower-level guys. The Dodgers gave up Yusniel Diaz and five lesser prospects for Manny Machado a couple years ago. I would expect the Story return to be a little lighter.
Twins just claimed Beau Burrows off waivers from the Tigers.

When am I going to just give up?
Steve Adams
2:33
Ah, the favorite pastime of snarky internet commenters: telling wildly gifted pro athletes to "give up" and "just retire" as if those players' perseverance is somehow an annoyance.

Really though -- why would he? He's 27, enjoying an amazing season when healthy and will be out probably 4-6 weeks. Sounds like time to retire to me, sure.
Champdo
2:33
How much do you think the Tigers could get for Schoop?
Steve Adams
2:35
Not a huge demand at his positions, and he was available at a year and $4.5MM this winter for a reason. I don't think they'll get too much of note, but the Tigers can maybe pull a prospect who'll rank in the 20-30 range in their system post-trade.
:-)
2:35
Scherzer to cards
Steve Adams
2:35
Nats have won seven of eight. I doubt they trade him unless they're completely buried in the NL East. They're not at the moment.
Dalton Wilcox
2:36
Who is the best CF that MIGHT be available with Buxton down? Marte and ??
Steve Adams
2:37
Ketel Marte and Starling Marte, although as I noted in last night's post, the Twins aren't going to make a push to bring in someone from outside the organization when they're still 10 under .500. If they take six of seven in their upcoming Indians/White Sox stretch of games, maybe that'll change the thinking, but again, I would think Buxton will return this summer.
deGrom
2:38
Should I start tipping my pitches just to make it a little fair?
Steve Adams
2:38
Ha.
2:39
I feel like deGrom could go full Greinke and call his pitches out, and he'd still dominate.

2:39
Does Kris Bryant's June slump change his chances for being extended/traded by the Cubs?
Steve Adams
2:40
I think his fate is largely tied to the team's overall record -- not his own performance. The Cubs can't trade him when they're tied for first, or even if they're only a couple games out. If they're four, five or more back with a day or two till the deadline, that's when I'd start wondering about a Bryant trade.

And as long as he's not completely lost at that point, I think there'd be a solid market.
Bob Castellini
2:40
Is there a market for Nick "Made of Glass" Senzel?
Steve Adams
2:41
There's no reason for the Reds to trade him when his value is probably at an all-time low.
Astros
2:41
Will James Click propose a new offer to Correa before the season ends?
Steve Adams
2:41
Doubt it. I'll be shocked if he doesn't hit the market at this point.
Matthew Boyd
2:42
Even with my current setback, should I expect to be on the Tigers after July 30th? Or, will I be on a different team?
Steve Adams
2:42
I think as long as he comes back and makes a healthy appearance or two while looking decent, there's a better than 50-50 chance he's moves.d
moved.*
Natsman
2:43
What kind of moves do you see us making?  Maybe a small pickup like our old friend Asdrubal?
Steve Adams
2:43
Death, taxes, and the Nationals acquiring Asdrubal Cabrera.
2:46
But yeah, something along those lines if they're still winning. Maybe a trade for a veteran starter to help stabilize the rotation -- probably someone without a sky-high asking price in a trade. An Andrew Heaney type of guy? (If the Angels are out of it) ... thinking a veteran with a decent enough salary that the offers for him won't be overwhelming but enough of a track record that Rizzo & Co. will want to go get the guy.

2:46
Naquin to Yanks male any sense?
Steve Adams
2:47
It makes sense in that he's technically a CF-capable outfielder who could be acquired without going over the luxury threshold. But Naquin is much better suited to be in a corner.
Nicholas
2:47
Lars Nootbaar coolest name in baseball right?
Steve Adams
2:47
It is immediately up there among my favorites.

2:48
Does it really make sense for the A’s to go after Story? Especially if Montas keeps struggling, wouldn’t pitching be the main focus at this point?
Steve Adams
2:51
If you want to argue that pitching is a bigger need, I don't think that's crazy, but I'm a Montas believer and think he'll be fine. Velocity is still good. Swinging-strike rate still good. Chase rate way up. He's giving up too much hard contact, and I doubt he's going to be the sub-3.00 ERA guy from a couple years ago, but I think it's a mid-3.00s profile and will trend that way over a larger body of work. He's only had two really poor outings, though obviously his most recent start was his worst of the year.
Tribulations
2:51
The Indians HAVE to acquire a starter now, right?  They have 5 bullpen guys - only one of which has gone 5 innings even once - and no viable major league starters in the pipeline.  They were already short BEFORE the injuries, so who do they target and when does it come together?
Steve Adams
2:54
The rotation should be their primary focus, yeah. I don't know how they're still 10 games over .500 with this many injuries, and I doubt if they replayed the schedule with the same health issues that'd be the case. But you can't unplay those games. They're in the books, and they owe it to their fans to try to improve now that this is where they are.

With Cleveland, it's always a question of how much money they'll be willing to spend, and that's especially true now after owner Paul Dolan gutted payroll this winter. I think Cleveland is a good fit for a Merrill Kelly or Chris Flexen type of acquisition -- a solid fourth SP you can plug in to help stabilize innings but won't break the bank, financially.
2:55
Frankly, I'm surprised they don't emulate that strategy in the offseason. I know Cleveland is uber-confident in its ability to develop starting pitching -- with good reason -- but those are depth adds for the rotation that cost pennies, even by their standards. If you have that level of budgetary constraint, why not take a shot on a cheap, two-year success story from the KBO or NPB?

2:55
What would it take for the Brewers to get Mancini? Would a package of Hiura + Ray Black as upside plays do the trick?
Steve Adams
2:57
I wouldn't be surprised to see them open to moving Hiura, and I do think other clubs would like him as a change-of-scenery candidate. I'm not sure Hiura has the type of value to bring in a middle-of-the-order bat with an extra year of cheap control remaining at this point, though. And the Orioles are likely going to want players with six years of control left -- not four-plus like Hiura.

Any suitors for Wilson Ramos now that he is a free agent?
