Trades are happening. What a time to be alive.
Let us discuss.
Chris

When will dipoto start trading?
Steve Adams
2:59
Have the Mariners ever stopped trading? He moved Encarnacion back on June 15, has been shopping Leake and will probably find a deal involving Elias, too.

Mark Feinsand says Royals are now in sell mode and will try to move Kennedy, Diekman, Hamilton, Duda... maybe Soler? What can they get?
Steve Adams

I didn't really understand why that report was framed as if it's a new revelation that the Royals are selling. Of course they are, and those guys have been known to be available forever. We were writing about Kennedy as a suddenly interesting trade candidate back in May:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/royals-trade-rumors-ian-kennedy...

If the Royals are willing to eat most of Kennedy's deal, as I suggested in that piece, they can get a decent prospect or two. Beyond him, I don't think the trade assets they have carry much value (outside of Whit Merrifield, who probably isn't going to be moved but would command a mammoth return)
3:02
No one is trading for Duda when he's hitting .152/.238/.283. He shouldn't even be lumped in as a trade candidate. He's a DFA/release candidate.

Rockies as buyers or sellers? Or do they need another 10 days to sort that out?
Steve Adams
3:05
I expect them to take a bit more time to make that determination. They won't go full tear-down, though, which makes it tough to imagine them selling much. Part of the reason they're in their current predicament is because their expensive, short-term veterans are performing so poorly. Maybe they'd move Scott Oberg, but they'd need a decent offer with him controlled through 2021.

Most likely pickup for Braves:  MadBum, Stroman, Boyd or neither of them?
Steve Adams
3:08
Wouldn't call any likelier than the others; it's going to come down to which arm the Braves deem the best blend of upgrade/cost of acquisition. It's a boring answer, but it's true.

I think they're better off condensing some of their upper-level arms into one of Stroman or Boyd, myself. And Anthopoulos knows both from his time with the Jays.
3:09
Mariners just DFA'ed Mac Williamson -- going to get a quick headline up on that. Sorry. One minute.

i need 2 SP right?   Tanaka, Paxton,Happ, Ray and Stroman? German can take Holders position in pen and CC 6th/Spot Starter??
Steve Adams
3:13
I'd say the Yankees would be fine adding one starter. They're still hopeful of getting Severino back -- possibly pairing him with an opener
Royals

Ian Kennedy seems like a good fit for teams not wanting to give up a big prospect. Could the Red Sox be in play, or is it a salary situation?
Steve Adams
3:15
Kennedy is the opposite type of reliever the Sox will pursue, unless KC pays all of his salary. Boston's already over the top luxury line, meaning they'll pay a 75% overage tax on any money they add to the books.
3:16
So Kennedy is owed about $6.3MM more from now through season's end... Boston would pay that AND $4.7MM in taxes. They'd need serious salary relief, at which point they'd have to include better prospects anyway.
Wait a minute...
3:16
Aren't the Cards in a wild card spot?  Why are they looking to sell off assets?
Steve Adams
3:18
Being open to moving players from your MLB roster doesn't make you a seller. In general, the whole black-and-white "buyer or seller" trope that proliferates so many deadline columns this season is overstated. It's certainly possible to move a player from the MLB roster for help in other areas. If anything, given the parity in both leagues with so many teams tanking (thus creating a tightly bunched Wild Card race among non-tankers every year), it'll become more common.

3:18
How come the best best 2B in the Padres organization is in AAA?
Steve Adams
3:18
I have no clue why the Padres don't have Urias up -- particularly when they're within striking distance in the NL WC race

Is Riley Greene already a Top 100 prospect?
Steve Adams
3:19
Greene, the Tigers' pick at #5 overall in this year's draft, is ranked 80th in MLB on Fangraphs' updated rankings:

With Wheeler's current injury and Stroman's recent (and historied) injury, does this enhance Bumgarner's trade value?
Steve Adams
3:21
I don't think so. You could also look at it and say teams will be more reluctant to pay a premium on Bumgarner because the ask on Wheeler has now dipped.
Giants Fan
3:21
Given his trade value, shouldn’t Giants trade Will Smith even if they stay hot the next 10 days and climb to .500?   They could keep rest of staff (including Madbum) in hopes of making a wild card push.  They may also get Cueto in September so he might provide a little boost as well.
Steve Adams
3:21
The Giants should not be deluded into the notion that they can contend in '19 and should still trade Bumgarner, Smith, Dyson, Watson, etc.

3:22
What pitchers do you see the Cubs targeting? Starters or Relievers?
Steve Adams
3:22
Lefty relievers over starters is my expectation
Dark lord
3:22
How about Nicholas castenoals and Shane greene to the rays for Wander Samuel Franco?
Steve Adams
3:23
The Tigers aren't getting the #1 prospect in baseball for Castellanos and Greene
Boyd
3:24
What are the changes the Tigers move Boyd or is the price simply too high?
Steve Adams
3:26
It's extremely high right now, as it should be. I don't like putting percentages on these things because there's no scientific way of going about it. It's just guesswork. I think it's likelier than not that he stays -- but not to the extent that I'd be stunned if he moves. So...., I don't know... maybe a one in three chance he's moved? [insert shrug emoji]

Does the Cubs deal make sense? Was Montgomery's value that low?
Steve Adams
3:30
A little surprised by it, but I'm sure they've been floating his name around and were underwhelmed by offers. He's pitched poorly and been hurt this year and was a possible non-tender candidate after the season. Tough not to like the Royals getting to take a chance on him when it only cost Maldonado, though.

I think, in general, Cubs fans have an inflated opinion of Montgomery because of his prior contributions. I saw several Cubs fans suggesting him as a piece to include with the Royals in a Merrifield deal (since KC wants MLB-ready talent), and my head spun.
3:32
And the Jays DFA'ed EJax, which I also missed at the time. Whoops. Another "back in a minute" moment for me. (Shout out to the guy who said that felt like a total AIM moment, ha)

3:34
Does Schwarber, Almora, Adzolay get us Whit Merrifield?
Steve Adams
3:36
Nope. The Royals are looking for pre-arb guys with tons of control. Schwarber and Almora have less control remaining than Merrifield. It seems like every Cubs fan hopes that a combo of the prospects they've soured on -- Schwarber, Almora, Happ -- can get Merrifield. It cannot.

Where do you think Gore and Hamilton will be traded to and what they will get back?
