Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 7/2/19

Steve Adams
3:05
Greetings all -- sorry for the abrupt end to last week's chat. There was some kind of server error with our chat provider, and I wasn't able to end the chat or publish anything to explain the situation (outside of putting a note in the actual post o MLBTR)
3:06
Seems like all the chats since have been fine, so hopefully that was a one-off issue

With the Pirates only 5 games out of 1st, the chances of them selling seems unlikely. Could the Pirates make a play for someone like Stroman to help their rotation?
Steve Adams
3:08
Kind of wonder if they'll be a bit gun shy since the Archer deal has blown up on them. I don't think the Pirates know just yet how aggressive they'll be; they're one of several clubs whose next few weeks of play will determine their deadline activity. If they do anything in the near term, I think it'd be a lower-scale move like a middle reliever.

We need a starter and reliever. What are the chances that a team would package both in a deal?  For instance...Boyd/Greene or Bumgarner/Smith?
Steve Adams
3:10
The price to acquire both Boyd and Greene would be astronomical; I can't imagine a team even paying it. Bymgarner/Smith is plausible for the Giants. (Or MadBum and one of Dyson or Watson)
Felipe Vazquez
3:10
Should I be worried that I'm going to get traded to the Dodgers or a team that's contending?  If so what might the pirates get in return for me?
Steve Adams
3:11
Neal Huntington basically flat-out said he's not trading Vazquez:

I wouldn't read too much into the Dodgers specifically being tied to him. Every team in baseball would have interest in acquiring Felipe, but it doesn't sound like anything's going to happen on that front.

What could Detroit get back if they traded Boyd and Greene together
Steve Adams
3:13
If they were packaging both, I wouldn't blame them for asking about virtually any prospect in baseball. 3.5 years of Boyd is extremely valuable, and 1.5 years of Greene is pretty nice as well. They'd have to hit a home run and land multiple elite prospects, probably one of whom is in the top 10-15 in all of baseball.

How close are the Red Sox to deciding that they should be sellers?
Steve Adams
3:14
They're 4 games over .500 and two back from a Wild Card spot. It'd take a pretty substantial losing month for them to punt on the season.

When does Tebow make his debut?
Steve Adams
3:16
At this point the Mets are such a circus that I expect them to actually do it -- maybe in September or something. And yes, I know he's been awful in the minors. I doubt they'd care because of ticket/jersey sales

Does Michael Wacha fetch any sort of return if we trade him? He looked awful earlier but has been better lately.
Steve Adams
3:18
Could probably get a middling prospect back for him and save a few bucks in the process, but he's not missing bats in his brief resurgence and is a free agent at season's end, so I wouldn't expect anything of real note in return.

The Rays are keeping hold of the first wild card, 8 of 12 against the Yankees after their current series is done. Isn’t now the time to make a trade to bolster the club?
Steve Adams
3:20
They can't force sellers to drop the high early asking prices; I'm sure they're trying to make some kind of move, but if you're a selling team why settle for anything less than a haul right now? With so many teams unsure of their deadline direction, you could very well have another 3-4 buyers to jump into the bidding by waiting two weeks or so

Are the Mets sellers at the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:22
Have to trade Wheeler and the see what else they can get for others (Vargas, Frazier, Thor if a team is willing to part with a strong package in hopes of revitalizing him). They're cooked in that division and aren't going to claw back into wild card contention

3:23
Do the Braves prioritize a starter or reliever before the deadline? or both? Any chance we see Folty come back a setup man/closer?
Steve Adams
3:25
At this point the rotation is a bigger need, which I didn't think was even possible with the 'pen they were trotting out earlier in the year, ha. They moved Newcomb to a relief role so I suppose it's not impossible, but I think Folty is viewed more definitively as a starter.

3:25
If the Padres trade Kirby Yates, should they be looking for ML-proven talent in return at this point, or still go after nearly ready touted prospects like Alex Kirilloff or Jesus Sanchez?
Steve Adams
3:27
I don't think they're a lock to move Yates -- although I think they'd be wise to do so if they slip much further in the standings. Also can't see him returning someone of Kirilloff's status; I know they pulled Mejia for Hand last season, but Hand was on a longer and club-friendly contract and the Padres packaged him with Cimber.

Will Zack Greinke be a hall of famer? What about Christian Yelich when all is said and done for him?
Steve Adams
3:29
I imagine Greinke will get in pretty easily. He's already a borderline Hall of Famer. He's going to retire with 200-250 wins, possibly 3000+ K's and 60-70 WAR. He's a pretty easy case.

Tougher to say with Yelich since we don't know how long this peak will last, but he's on that type of trajectory at the moment.

Is Trey Mancini worth a team's top-30 prospect?
Steve Adams
3:32
A top 30 in all of baseball? I doubt they'd get that. But if you're just talking someone in a specific organization's top 30 -- of course. He's worth a package of a few of those guys, headlined by one of a club's better farmhands. Mancini isn't a star, but he can flat-out hit, and he's controllable for 3 years beyond 2019.
Melancon
3:32
When do I get DFA'd a la Russ Ortiz style?
Steve Adams
3:33
Rough June for Melancon, but the overall body of work in 2019 is solid.

3:33
It has been a tough 12 months for the Halos, Aaron Cox (Trout's brother in law), Luis Valbuena and now Tyler Skaggs. Do you think playing today will help get their mind off of what happened or just a reminder of him not being there? One game just doesn't seem like enough time to process what happened.
Steve Adams
3:34
I cannot fathom how they'll go out and play with clear heads after yet another tragedy. That story is so, so sad.

3:35
Since Alex Wood will most likely never pitch for the Reds, do they make a move for a controllable pitcher like Wheeler, Thor, Stroman, ect..?
Steve Adams
3:36
Wheeler is a free agent at season's end.

The Reds' strategy seemed to be to load up on shorter-term assets without mortgaging too much of the farm. They'd need to change course in order to bring in someone controlled through 2020-21. I don't know if they perceive the rotation to be enough of a need to do that.

If Cleveland decided to test the trade market on Lindor, any prospect untouchable for him?
Steve Adams
3:37
They won't do it, but no, they'd be justified to ask about anyone for Lindor
Contract
3:38
What is the quickest instance you recall of a player signing a large contract and being traded? (I.e hand extension traded year later)
Steve Adams
3:39
That's the most immediate one that comes to mind for me. Could consider the Marlins' fire sale where they traded Buehrle, Reyes, etc. one year after pretending they were going to be aggressive because of the new stadium.

Colome to Boston -- can the Red Sox afford his salary?
Steve Adams
3:40
Any money the Sox are taking on at this point comes with a 75% luxury tax. I doubt they'd go get Colome unless the White Sox paid pretty much all of his salary.
