Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/10/24

Good morning all! Looking forward to another chat. We'll get going at 1pm CT, but feel free to start shooting questions my way anytime. I always try to answer a blend of preloaded questions and those from the live crowd.
1:01
Greetings! I'm a couple minutes behind schedule, sorry. I'll get this rolling in about two minutes.
1:03
Ok! And we're off

When does MLBTR expect to start the offseason outlook series? I always enjoy reading the articles!
Steve Adams
1:04
Likely in the latter half of the current month. I'll have to check with Tim Dierkes on the timeline for that, but we'll probably get those rolling and start doing prep work for our annual Top 50 free agents late September and throughout October.

The Angels have three potential free agents after next season, Rengifo, Anderson and Canning.  Do you expect all three to be traded in the offseason or by next years trade deadline?
Steve Adams
1:06
I don't understand why they weren't traded at this past deadline.

I mean, I do. The Angels want to be as competitive as possible and think they have a chance in 2025. I just disagree. (As do a lot of/most onlookers.) I think they SHOULD be open to moving them all this winter but think they'll probably delude themselves into playing for '25 and then move them (and some other guys they sign to one-year deals) at next summer's deadline.

Twins are in free fall.  Could the front office be in trouble if they blow this lead?
Steve Adams

It wasn't president of baseball ops Derek Falvey and GM Thad Levine who decided to cut payroll by $30MM. Joe Pohlad can look in the mirror if he's upset with the late struggles. The MN front office missed on several of the small-scale additions they DID make, but you can only criticize so much when after winning a playoff series last year, ownership comes to them and says "Great season guys! Now do it again, with about 80% of the payroll, thanks."

Falvey and Levine are in the final year of their contracts, I believe, and they were hired when Jim Pohlad was running point, not his nephew Joe. So I suppose there's a small chance they make a change, but I have a hard time faulting them too much given the restrictions placed on them by ownership.

That doesn't entirely excuse the offseason dealings -- banking on Anthony DeSclafani to be healthy was an odd choice -- but they were hardly put in a position to succeed.

How many years does MVProfar get in free agency, and would he even risk leaving the Padres again?
Steve Adams
1:11
I can't see him getting more than three, and I think it'll come from the Padres
Tim
1:11
I wonder if Pete Alonso would have interest in coming to St. Louis?
Steve Adams
1:12
If the Cardinals are willing to offer him more money/years than the other 29 teams, I'm sure he would.
Tim
1:12
Out of Lynn, Gibson and Kittridge, who you see back with the Cardinals in 2025?
Steve Adams
1:12
I'd be surprised if they don't pick up Gibson's option.

Hi! Looking for advice, what you recommend me as a FA? Return to the Dodgers or look for change of scenery?
Steve Adams
1:14
I'd prioritize landing in a spot where you're given a committed rotation spot, and I don't know that the Dodgers can promise that with the way they cycle through their staff. They'll obviously be competitive, and it's a familiar place for him, so totally understandable if he stays, but I'd be looking to follow Jack Flaherty's lead and go to a team that says, "Ok you're in our rotation and you've got a good long leash there."

1:15
Too soon to say Chourio's extension is looking good for the team?
Steve Adams
1:15
Nope. Chourio looks great. Obviously that can change, but of course it's looking good right now. He's been one of the best players on the planet since June, and he's 20. He's outrageous.

Why would Ohtani ever want to pitch again (Risk injury - Miss playing time)?
Steve Adams
1:16
I would assume:

A) Because he is very good at it
and
B) He enjoys it

Do Ha-Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar get qualifying offers?
Steve Adams
1:16
Kim should. I'd be surprised if he doesn't.

I wouldn't make one to Profar, and I think he'd absolutely accept it if they did, but maybe the Padres are fine with that. They clearly love the player

Do you expect any of the Skubal/Miller/Crochet chatter to continue in the offseason? Or has the door closed on some of these guys in terms of them being trade candidates?
Steve Adams
1:18
Skubal was never a big trade candidate. We put him a symbolic 50th on our summer Top Trade Candidate list and then outlined that he was only there because he was the most in-demand player on the market but the Tigers had no intention of moving him and would need one of the most comical overpays in recent memory to do it. Now the Tigers are pushing for an improbable late playoff bid. They're not trading him this offseason. It's not a thing.

Crochet will be out there, 100% yes. Miller's somewhere between the two in the sense that Oakland will listen, but I lean toward him staying.

Trade Ozuna in the off season to replenish their farm system.............what say you?
Steve Adams
1:21
I don't think a 34-year-old pure DH making market value for a pure DH is going to have the trade value you're suggesting here, and that's even before going into his off-field issues in the past. He's had a great season at the plate, but I don't think you're going to command some franchise-altering haul of prospects for him. Plus, the Braves will of course want too contend next season and Ozuna seems like he'll be a part of that.

They probably need to move one of Ozuna or Soler, though, and I suppose Ozuna is the easier of the two. That Soler trade was odd.

Who are you picking in the 2019 Draft with the #1 Pick?  Adley or Bobby?  Think the Orioles regret the pick?
Steve Adams
1:25
Right now, Witt, sure. But at the start of the season I'd have said Rutschman. I doubt they regret it. Adley's been very good, even with his summer slump, and these things ebb and flow. I would not at all be surprised if Rutschman had a 7-8 WAR season and Witt "only" had like a 6-WAR season that year in the near future, for instance. It's not like Rutschman is a Brady Aiken or Mark Appel level miss.

Does Teoscar get a QO from LA?
Steve Adams
1:25
Yup
Free agency
1:26
Does Bellinger opt in or out?
Steve Adams
1:27
I lean toward forgoing the opt out, since I think with a big 2025 he could still get that nine-figure deal. But if he's content to max out right now, he might be able to top his contract's remaining 2/50 this offseason if he's content to settle on a notably lighter AAV
Ryan
1:27
When is the last time a mutual option got picked up by both sides?
Steve Adams
1:28
The last instance I recall was the Rockies and Matt Belisle in 2013:

Soto
1:29
Does Soto structure his contract like Otani?
Steve Adams
1:30
Scott Boras was pretty critical of the structure after the fact. His comment on the deflated net-present value was:

"The market remains status quo. No average annual value at or above $44 million. Clear evidence of a strategic and managed effort."

I think he'll look for a new AAV record absent the presence of large-scale deferrals.

Do you see Goldschmidt getting inducted the HOF some day?
Steve Adams
1:31
Sure, especially if he bounces back at all next season and has another good year or two left in him.
