Steve Adams

RIP Norm McDonald :(

Let's chat about baseball and try not to think about that crappy news for the next hour
Cash

Who will be SS for NYY in 2022?
Steve Adams
2:05
The honest answer is that even they don't know yet, but I'll put Trevor Story down as my guess. I expect they'll be in on the bulk of the notable free agents.
Not Norm...
2:06
Are we going to see an extension frenzy before the season is over, with the CBA coming up?
Steve Adams
2:07
I don't think we'll see a frenzy, no. I still expect the Braves to eventually work out a Freeman extension. Beyond that, maybe we'll see a couple, but no landslide or anything
Royals make their promotions official
2:08
Dayton Moore is president of baseball operations
J.J. Piccolo is general manager
Jake
2:08
you think the Cubs will show David Ross the door?
Steve Adams
2:08
I do not
Need playoffs
2:09
Will the Phillies be active in the off-season?
Steve Adams
2:10
Yeah -- they didn't hire Dave Dombrowski to come in and make a bunch of fringe moves. They'll be active in the trade and free-agent markets. I just wrote for our Front Office subscribers last week about how they match up nicely for some of the A's high-end arb pieces that'll likely be available.

assuming Acuna is healthy and Freeman is resigned, what do the braves need to do to just just win the east/make playoffs but go deeper than first couple of rounds?
Steve Adams
2:13
Adding to the 'pen would be helpful, since short-series games like that are naturally constructed to favor teams with a deep relief corps. But the volatility of relievers makes that hard to predict with much certainty. We see big-name bullpen additions flop all the time. And even if they do push the right buttons to improve the 'pen, anything can happen in a best-of-five or best-of-seven series.

I'd like to see them add an outfielder, beef up the 'pen... but it's already a good-looking team, especially next year if you believe Soroka, Acuna, etc. can be healthy.

Cutch returning to the Pirates in  2022?
Steve Adams
2:14
If you're McCutchen you want to go to a contender.
If you're the Pirates, you're probably going cheap in the OF and adding someone you can control more than a year -- someone with some prime left. A non-tendered guy, some kind of trade candidate... I don't think a reunion really works there.

2:15
Are the Cards going to end up with a bunch of dinosaurs ending their career after next year? (Wainwright, Molina, Pujols, Carpenter.)
Steve Adams
2:15
I don't think Carpenter will be back.
2:16
Yadi is obviously back already. I expect Wainwright to return. Pujols, maybe if the DH comes to the NL, but man ... if it does, they'd be better off signing a more-productive player. I suppose they could sign him and then platoon him with an in-house option or another low-cost bench pickup. A Brad Miller type or something.

Assuming the Yankees free-fall continues, who is more likely to be excused: Boone or Cashman?
Steve Adams
2:17
I wouldn't expect either.
Gallo
2:17
Not sure what the Rangers offered me, but I should have taken the extension with How I’m playing in NY
Steve Adams
2:19
It's still just six weeks. Not defending the output -- it's been ugly -- but if Gallo has a standard Gallo year in 2022, no one's going to care too much about these past six weeks.
Brian Cashman

Why should I invest Hal's money in a shortstop like Story, Correa, or Seager when I have two prime young shortstop prospects in Peraza and Volpe?  Wouldn't we be better off signing a placeholder (Jose Iglesias, for example) and concentrating  our spending on the pitching staff?  For that matter, why can't Velazquez/Wade hold the fort until the young SS are ready?
Steve Adams
2:21
I don't think adding a shortstop and bolstering the rotation are mutually exclusive, and having top prospect(s) is no sure thing. Estevan Florial, Deivi Garcia and Clarke Schmidt have been non-factors in the Bronx this year, and over the past 2-3 years they've all been untouchable.

Any of the free-agent shortstops could move to another position if Volpe rakes for two years and still looks like a plus defender at shortstop.

What are the chances of the Chicago white Sox’s landing Gallo in free agency
Steve Adams
2:21
Gallo isn't a free agent until after the 2022 season.
Hilby
2:22
The red Sox have only one free agent as far as I can tell (Feliz) . Expecting big trades this off season?
Steve Adams
2:24
Michael Feliz isn't a free agent, though he could well be non-tendered or just outrighted off the roster into minor league free agency at season's end.

The Sox have plenty of free agents: Adam Ottavino, J.D. Martinez will opt out of his final season, Eduardo Rodriguez, Kyle Schwarber. They'll probably buy out Garrett Richards' option.
Super Giants
2:25
Can you think of a team with a similar preseason expectation exceeding it by so much as this years Giants team?  They looked like a team at the crossroads with all those older position players. Yet here we are.
Steve Adams
2:27
I don't think anyone pegged the 2014 Royals as a World Series club. The Twins went from 100 losses to a Wild Card berth a few years ago. I don't want to downplay the Giants' success or the manner in which they've beaten expectations, but I liked them at least somewhat more than the 1% preseason playoff odds they retweeted from ESPN today, ha. (Although I'm guilty, too, of thinking the NL West was basically a Dodgers/Padres race back in March)

HOF RYAN BRAUN!
Steve Adams

BOLD prediction: He does not get in.

Would signing Wainwright be a smart move to pair with Morton for the Braves?
Steve Adams
2:29
If Wainwright were going to sign anywhere other than St. Louis, it'd probably be the Braves ... but I would put the odds at like 98% Cards and 2% Braves

Do the marlins make a big splash?  I think Correa playing SS for them makes too much sense!
Steve Adams
2:30
They're not spending near that level. It'd be fun as hell, but it won't happen.
Chaim B
2:30
You suspiciously left out Martin Perez option. Do I bring him back, because he is cheap? Or do I excercise the option and trade him?
Steve Adams
2:31
I was going off the cuff before and just forgot Perez off the top of my head. At a net $5.5MM price, I don't love picking it up.

What would an Astros 4 man playoff rotation look like, especially if Odorizzi's foot injury keeps him out? Framber, McCullers, Greinke and Garcia  with Urquidy in the pen?
Steve Adams
2:32
They literally just put Odorizzi on the injured list about a minute ago.
