Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/19/17

Thoughts on me playing exclusively as a pitcher?
Steve Adams
4:53
That was the general assumption all along, wasn't it? I never expected him to keep playing shortstop all that long based on anything I read. And it's the right move, I'd say... have him focus on developing one specific skill set rather than more slowly progressing down two separate (and perhaps conflicting) development paths.
The Upside Down

Will season 2 of Stranger Things be better than season 1?
Steve Adams
4:53
Tall order. I'll be happy if it even approaches the goodness of S1

Does ruseny Castillo have  enough trade value to make a worth it? If he stays with the Red Sox is being a 4th outfielder next year a real potienal?
Steve Adams
4:55
I don't think he has much trade value at all, and I don't think he'll be with the Sox. He doesn't count against the luxury tax if he's not on the 40-man roster, but if they add him back to the 40-man they take that luxury hit.
Eric Byrnes
4:56
Eric Byrnes, a good friend of Justin Upton, says he will stay with the Angels.  What are your thoughts?
Steve Adams
4:56
I don't think even Justin Upton knows what he's going to do yet, so I don't see why Eric Byrnes would know.

If Dodgers choke again in the Playoffs, think they fire GM/manager?
Steve Adams
4:56
I can't see that happening whatsoever, no.

The Sandoval experiment hasn't gone well for SF. Of course, neither has anything else. Who mans the hot corner for them next year - Arroyo, Jones, a free agent? Or a Pablo retread?
Steve Adams
4:59
It blows my mind that they even gave him the at-bats to have an 0-for-38 slump. If I'm the Giants, I'd rather have gotten a look at Jae-gyun Hwang for a few weeks.

I think their hope is that Arroyo can hold down the fort, but they should still bring some kind of veteran in to get at-bats there if Arroyo needs more development time.

Bringing back Eduardo Nunez makes a good deal of sense to me, actually... give him 3B early on, make Arroyo win the job, and then bounce Nunez all over the field.

Time for Tommy Joseph to get cut and play in Japan.
Steve Adams
5:00
He does seem like the kind of dude that could go mash in Japan (or Korea). But if the Phillies move on from him, some AL club could feel he's a decent bench bat still. I don't think he's at that point yet.

Who do the Twins start for a one game playoff?
Steve Adams
5:01
They'd go with Santana if they have the luxury of clinching a couple of days early and being able to set it up that way.

What happened to Chris Carter, 40 + homers and no job?
Steve Adams
5:02
No defensive value, huge strikeout rate, limited on-base skills. Plus homers are more prevalent than ever before in 2017. I'm surprised he couldn't find a better deal than the one he got with the Yankees, but he played his way out of a role with that team

Cozart 100% accepts a QO, do the Reds want him next year?
Steve Adams
5:03
I disagree with the notion that he'll 100% accept. There's a chance he takes it, to be sure, but Cozart for one year and $18MM is perfectly reasonable.

Can the Rockies pull it out at the end and get the second WC?
Steve Adams
5:06
I've been the Rox doubter all year because of their lack of pitching. But, they've got a better schedule in the final two weeks than the Brewers and a current two-game lead. Plus Milwaukee lost its best pitcher for the rest of the year. My predictions seem to always end up as curses for the teams I choose, so I guess I should apologize to the Rox for saying that at this point I think they can indeed just barely hang on and fend off Milwaukee.
(Before probably losing to a much better D-backs team in a Wild Card game)

Who is the favorite to land Ohtani? I think he would fit well with the Cubs.
Steve Adams
5:07
I think he's going to an AL team so he can DH on days he doesn't pitch. Beyond that, I don't think there's much point in venturing a guess. Every team is going to be interested in him and the new CBA prevents any one club from dramatically outspending the others to get him.

I imagine that there's going to have to be some kind of handshake deal involving an early-career extension.

What would AZ have to offer JD Martinez for him not hit the open market? How about a Cespedes numbers?
Steve Adams
5:09
I don't think Cespedes' contract is anywhere close to getting it done. If they offer him 6/140 or something right now, perhaps he'd stay. But, as I wrote in this week's Mailbag, I think he's gone:

Is the future outfield of the mets. Nimmo lagares cespedes or do they bring back jay Bruce to be an outfield/1b
Steve Adams
5:11
Conforto is a huge part of that future unless his shoulder doesn't allow him to return to full strength. I think Nimmo's more of a fourth guy for them, and I don't think they'll re-sign Bruce this winter, no. Adding some kind of fourth OF type as an insurance policy for Conforto and Lagares makes sense though, even if it's just an Austin Jackson or Rajai Davis type.

Is Counsell a strong contender for NL Manager of the Year?
Steve Adams
5:12
He'll be in the running, I'd imagine. Manager of the Year seems to often just go to "Manager of the team that unexpectedly contended" or "Manager of the team that decimated its division" -- Counsell fits the former nicely
Chipper Jones
5:12
Will I get into the HOF first ballot?
Steve Adams
5:13
Chipper should get a unanimous vote, but some curmudgeonly fool will leave him off on principle and make a moronic pitch for how there should be no such thing as a first-ballot HOFer (when really he probably just wants attention).

At any rate, yes. He will. Deservedly so.

Jayson Werth,  am I a Nat next year?
Steve Adams
5:14
I don't believe so, no.

Do you see the Cubs  going after second tier free agent pichers or trading from major league roster
Steve Adams
5:15
Can I say "both"?

I think they could very well do both this winter.

I'm going to say "both."

I am.

Both.

I've done it!

Who are the top three GM's on the hot seat by the end of the regular season in your opinion?
Steve Adams
5:18
I don't really think there are many on the hot seat right now, to be honest. So many teams have a GM they only appointed within the past couple of years. I could see the Marlins' new ownership group making some changes, but beyond that I'd be at least somewhat surprised by any other GM changes (unless I'm just stupidly blanking on someone obvious -- in which case point it out!)

I'd say MAYBE Alderson, but reports have suggested that he's probably safe.

should the giants target Kiermaier, or inciarte for CF. Both have favorable contracts and would greatly increase the outfield defense, which is indispensable at att.
