'Tis almost playoff season! One week until October baseball is in full effect
3:17
I'll get underway in a minute here -- need to make one quick tweak to a prior post. Feel free to start asking questions
3:19
Weird, was having trouble getting any questions in Firefox, but looks like we're running smooth in Chrome
3:20
Nope. Something is up with the chat software here, one second. Sorry for the technical troubles here. Trying to sort this out.
3:21
Ok... trying again here.

Do I extend a QO to Markakis?
Steve Adams
3:23
I can't fathom them doing so. Markakis had a huge power surge in the first five weeks of the season -- 7 HR in 140ish PAs -- and has hit 7 HR in something like 500 PAs since. Basically, since mid-May, he's hit like Nick Markakis.

Plus, the free agent market has immensely devalued corner-only OFs and players in their mid-30s. Markakis is both of those.
In short, I think he'd insta-accept. At least he should.

Trade me to STL for young pitching?
Steve Adams
3:25
He's had a pair of down seasons at the plate, some injury issues, isn't cheap and has some no-trade protection. Plus even with the front office shakeup, I can't see the Giants rebuilding

Do you think the O's will consider moving Cobb this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:25
I'm sure they would love to, but no one is taking that contract.
3:26
It's not a matter of "Hey should we do this?" It's a matter of "Who could we possibly talk into this and how?"

No one was willing to pay the guy anywhere near that much when he was available to all teams. No one's going to want him at that rate coming off his worst professional season

Who is an underrated free agent catcher this off season?
Steve Adams
3:29
Can you be the top catcher in the class and still be underrated? I don't think Yasmani Grandal gets credit for just how good he is. He's a slam-dunk QO for the Dodgers in my mind (and a slam dunk to reject), and yet I still saw lots of pushback when Mark suggested that in his QO forecast piece this past weekend.

If you want someone more low-key, I'd say Rene Rivera was a pretty nice bargain last winter and could be again this winter.

Chances Santana and/or Broxton get moved this offseason
Steve Adams
3:31
They're both out of minor league options now, so I have to think they're quite likely to go this time around. Milwaukee won't lose them for nothing. Could try to trade Thames and keep one of the two as an alternative, I suppose, but they'll be moving some OFs this winter.

Bumgarner to Braves for Ian Anderson, Christian Pache, and Colby Allard.  Who says no?
Steve Adams
3:32
I'm not giving that up for one year of Bumgarner if I'm the Braves.
And again, I don't really see any way the Giants rebuild.

3:33
Take a guess on the contract for Michael Brantley this offseason and do the Indians pursue?
Steve Adams
3:35
He's such a hard one to peg given his injury history and the way the market has devalued corner outfielders. Brantley is a considerably better player than Jay Bruce, though, so I have a hard time seeing him take less than that. Could be two years at a huge annual value or something like Jay Bruce-plus (he got 3/39). If he had better health, I'd take four years on him. As it is, I'm saying something like 2/36 or 3/45, but this is honestly the first real thought I've put into it.

Melvin or Cash for manager of the year?
Steve Adams
3:37
I'm sure it'll go to Melvin since the A's made the playoffs, but either one would be deserving. If I were choosing, I might go with Cash myself, but either would be fine with me.
Cora will get some consideration, too, I'm sure... but it seems to usually go to more unexpected contenders if there is one.

Can you review the QO and what it means to receive one ? Thank you.
Steve Adams
3:40
If a team wishes to receive draft compensation for the loss of a player it can offer said player a one-year deal worth the mean salary of the 125 highest-paid players in the game. A player can only receive one QO in his career and can only receive a QO if he spent the entire year with that organization (midseason pickups are ineligible).

He has 10 days to decide whether to accept or reject the offer. Accept, and he's signed at one year and whatever that rate is (should be about $18MM this season). He can't be traded, without consent, before June 15 of the following year. Reject and any new club signing him will forfeit pre-set draft pick(s) and possibly some international funds.
As I type all this out, of course, it dawns on me that I could've just sent this link, ha:

Who’s the next team to blow it all up?
Steve Adams
3:42
D-backs are in a pretty tough spot looking down the road. Pollock and Corbin gone this offseason. Goldy gone after '19. Robbie Ray after '20. Jake Lamb's got shoulder issues. Greinke aging and on that huge contract. Stuck with Yasmany Tomas in AAA and the remainder of his colossal misstep. Weak farm system.

Is Buck a goner?
Steve Adams
3:43
Seems likelier than I'd have thought three months ago. Awhile ago I'd have guessed Duquette out and Buck maybe stays. Sounds like the opposite may hold true now.

Give the Tigers rebuild a letter grade...  Progress so far (barely a year in). "Incomplete" doesn't count!!
Steve Adams

B-? The top end of their farm is looking nice with Mize, Perez, Faedo, Manning, Burrows -- plus Fulmer and Boyd in the Majors. Helped that they had the most clear-cut 1-1 selection available in recent years, but they did well in the Verlander trade, and I think Candelario will be a good player for them. Think they should've traded Greene sooner (said that last winter, so not speaking based on 100% hindsight here or anything), but I don't know that they'd have pulled in a haul for him even then.

It sucks for them that Fulmer had such an unremarkable season, but I get not wanting to deal him last winter coming off nerve surgery.

Would the Reds consider trading Scooter and Suarez this winter? I’m guessing they could get quality prospects for them
Steve Adams
3:47
They want to extend Gennett, and if they were going to trade Suarez they wouldn't have A) Extended him for 7 years or B) Moved Senzel to the outfield

Would you like to address your Cub bias?
Steve Adams
3:48
My Minnesota-native Cub bias? Sure thing.
Not looking past the playoffs

Watching everyone of his starts makes me think Sean Newcomb is on the move this offseason. Newcomb for Austin Hedges, who says no?
