We looked like Legit Contenders last night.  61 Rebounds !!
Dana Gauruder
11:03
I expect nothing less from the Pelicans this season with the return of Zion. They made it to the play-in tournament last season despite his absence and a really slow start. With Zion, Jones, JV, Ingram and Nance, they should be one of the top rebounding teams in the league.
Jazz
11:06
Do you think Jordan Clarkson will be a more willing Passer now that he is in the Starting lineup?  He has been kind of a Black hole / Ball stopper in recent years.
Dana Gauruder
11:09
He's been asked most of his career to provide point production off the bench. He should have been a facilitator as well in that role, though that hasn't always been the case as you point out. Five assists and six turnovers -- not good numbers but the Jazz have a brand new look, so you can cut him some slack. I think it will certainly enhance his trade value if he becomes more of a playmaker. I doubt Clarkston will remain on Utah's roster after the trade deadline.

Raptors looked tough and that was without 2 rotation players. They still need that slasher and just wondering who do you think they would have their sights on? Clarkson comes to mind but I'm sure there is someone else out there we won't be thinking of.
Dana Gauruder
11:12
Hey, another Clarkston question. I could see Toronto as a good spot for him. I'd like to see the Raptors get another quality option in the backcourt, particularly at the point. If VanVleet goes down at any point, they're really in trouble in that area. It was just opening night but it was a nice win over a Cavs team that on paper has a lot more depth.

The Wizards bench looks stunningly good. 43 points from the bench even without Hachimura going insane (granted, some of that was Avdija getting injured, but still).
Dana Gauruder
11:15
I'm not stunned at all by the bench production. Washington has depth, particularly at the forward spots. Their lottery pick didn't even play and yet their second unit looked sharp. Delon Wright was a nice pickup, Rui was a lottery pick and Barton has been a starter most of his career. Gafford is a great energy guy to have on a second unit. Depth shouldn't be an issue for the Wizards.

Celtics trade Grant Williams and Al Horford to the Atlanta Hawks for John Collins. Celtics throw in a protected 1st round pick?
Dana Gauruder
11:18
Interesting deal, though I don't see it happening. I think Boston is content with the roster it has. I also don't think the Celtics would be eager to trade with another potential EC playoff team -- the Durant pursuit was an exception, as he's one of the top players in the league. I don't Atlanta would go that route, either, at least not in the short run.

Hard to believe these 3 traditional Bigs are still out there on the Free Agent market.  Looks like it will take an injury for them to get Back into the League ?
Dana Gauruder
11:20
Each case is a little different but I think it goes to show how traditional centers have been devalued by the current state of the game. You've got to be able to defend pick-and-rolls and it helps to be a reliable 3-point threat. As you indicated, it would probably take a significant injury to a center for any of those vets to get signed.

How about splitting up the Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen combo?  Play some Kevin Love next to them, so we can get more Shooting out on the court.  Love can still rebound too.  The twin towers look is bad for spacing.
Dana Gauruder
11:24
I don't believe the Cavs would have signed Allen to a long-term deal and drafted Mobley last season if they had qualms about playing them together. They got to the play-in with those 2 sharing the court and the expectation is they'll only get better in the coming seasons. I could see scenarios where one is off the court in late-game situations but if there's any issues regarding the Mobley-Allen combo, the Cavs are going to underachieve. I doubt that will occur.

Will this be the year that we see a healthy De’andre Hunter for the Hawks and watch him become the great player he can be?
Dana Gauruder
11:27
They gave him a really nice extension, so they're definitely banking on him to be a quality starter going forward. He's had some injuries that have set back his career. I don't know if they need Hunter to be an All-Star level player to live up to the extension but he has to be more productive at both ends of the floor than he has been in his first three years. That 10 for 15 shooting performance in the opener was a nice start.
Durant
11:28
We looked awful. Did i call Rich right after the game and tell him to start pushing for a trade again?
Dana Gauruder
11:31
Pushing the panic button after one loss? I don't think that's a good look. Simmons of course didn't even play last year. He's got a ways to go to develop chemistry with KD/Irving. O'Neale is new to the lineup and Harris/Warren are a couple of impact players who still haven't returned from injuries. The Nets should get better as they go along.

If lakers out of it by the 20th game of the season should they start trading assets for draft picks to build a better team for the future?
Dana Gauruder
11:35
A loss to the defending champions on their home floor shouldn't be a cause for major concern. Lots of new pieces that have to be integrated with LeBron and AD, plus a new coach running the show. If there's a trade, it's more likely finally finding a landing spot for Russell than acquiring future picks. Really, other than giving up AD, what player on their roster would deliver some future first-rounders? The season would really have to go in the tank for that to happen.

Should the wizards pay kuzma 20m or more per year?, or trade kuzma in the mid-season? Or do a sign and trade in free agency?
Dana Gauruder
11:37
If they could sign Kuzma to an extension in the 20-25 mill range, that might be considered a bargain. Remember, the salary cap is going to jump in a couple years when the new TV money rolls in. What happens with Kuzma is predicated a lot on the type of seasons that Rui and Avdija have. If that duo produces at a much more efficient rate, Kuzma becomes more expendable.

The lakers two picks have great value especially if a team decides to tank. Do you agree? the media is saying the lakers have no assets but I disagree.
Dana Gauruder
11:42
I don't think those picks are all that enticing. You're talking about 2027 and 2029 -- way down the road. If they had the ability to deal a 2023 or 2024 first-rounder with little or no protection, that would have greater value. If teams have a choice between acquiring a pick that comes to fruition in the next year or two, compared to one 5 years down the road, they'll choose the earlier pick pretty much every time. If you're a GM, you don't know if you'll still be running the show that far in advance.

Does dame finish the season in portland?
Dana Gauruder
11:46
By virtue of his contract extension, he can't be traded until next summer. So yes, no matter how this season plays out for the Blazers, he'll be on the roster.

Pistons rookies looked great last night, but is time running out for Killian Hayes?  1-for-9 last night and has never shot 40% from the field in a season.
Dana Gauruder
11:49
Again, I don't put much stock in one game, one week or one month. But yes, Hayes can't shoot like that if he wants to be part of the Pistons' revival beyond this season. His playmaking skills and defense give him value -- if he can find a consistent offensive stroke, he'll be a very nice asset. It will also help him when the Pistons get healthier. Burks and Livers were out last season -- those are 2 players who can space the floor and give Hayes more room to operate.
Montrez Under or Over Rated?

The advanced stats at Basketball Reference show Harrell to be both productive and very efficient.  Yet his reputation is that of an extremely limited player with the Lakers benching and banishing him the one season they had him for.
Dana Gauruder
11:54
I've got to believe Doc will play him more than 11 minutes, as he did in the opener. Harrell has also put up good numbers off the bench when given ample playing time -- it's the defensive aspect and his lack of a 3-point shot that gives coaches pause. That's why he's been a 20-25 minute guy. If he added a 3-point shot to his offensive game and/or was considered a top-notch defender, his value would rise.

Orlando got 4 point guards, Suggs, Anthony, Fultz, Hampton, Now who should we trade?
Dana Gauruder
11:59
I found it interesting that Ross, who has been a second-unit guy most of his career, started last night. Of course, Harris was out but if there's one spot that the Magic need to upgrade, it's the '2.' So unless they want to go with a 2-point guard look most of the time, I'd say one of those point men is expendable. Are they ready to give up on Suggs after an injury-plagued rookie year? I doubt it. I'd say Anthony is the most likely to go.

I'll take the Clippers on that one.
That's. all the time we have today. Luke Adams will host our next chat on Tuesday at noon CT.
