What reason would Donovan Mitchell have to sign an extension this early? Seems like he only has up to go
Dana Gauruder
1:04
Extra security? The Cavs are motivated by the fact that there's always speculation he wants to play in New York. To give more background, last Friday was the first day the Cavs could talk extension with Mitchell. He has three years left on his contract, including a player option in final year. Cleveland went all in to get him and an extension would signal it's still committed to building around Mitchell long-term. From his standpoint, Mitchell might consider the possibility of an injury marring his career. He could lock into substantial money now, rather than risking that something bad could happen to him physically down the road.

I stated this week in an interview that the Bucks don't need a backup point guard as we have enough secondary ballhandlers to take the load off of Jrue.  Am I wrong (or posturing)?
Dana Gauruder

The loss of Carter puts that to question. I don't know if they have a true backup point now. Beasley is more of an off-guard and Andre Jackson is a rookie with good all-around skills but he's a work in progress shooting-wise. But obviously, Giannis handles the ball a ton and a healthy Middleton can shoulder some of the responsibility as well. I don't see it as a major problem right now but they could acquire another point man at some point next season.

Why are teams so low on Christian Wood? He's not Jabari Parker on defense or whatever, and he seemed to be a regular guy last season as far as off-court stuff went. Is he just holding out to get a better deal? Or do they know something we don't?
Dana Gauruder

Wood really bounced around the league in his first few years until he put up some big numbers on a bad Pistons team and got that nice free agent deal. The Mavs certainly soured on him during the second half of last season and I think he'll regret not signing an extension. He's always been more of a numbers guy than a major impact player and there's a clamor around the league for young, switchable bigs. He's gotten caught in a logjam of veteran free agent bigs on the market. I agree he's worth quite a bit more than a vet's minimum but he may have to settle for that and try to rebuild his value next season.

The DLo situation will be interesting.  Does he come in with a chip on his shoulder and play hard or disappointed with his contract then outplayed by Vincent?
Dana Gauruder
1:13
Competition for minutes isn't a bad thing. I think Russell got as much as the market could bear. I don't think there was a team out there looking to sign him as their main floor leader. What's interesting is that Russell dropped his no-trade clause in the new contract. He'll get his money but he can be moved if things don't work out and Vincent becomes the main backup guy.

Hypothetically speaking, we get Dame.  Losing Lowry, Robinson, Herro, Jaquez and some picks in a 4 team deal.  Who do you see the Heat looking at to fill their roster.
Dana Gauruder

If they gave up those players, it would leave them thin at the wing positions. They also lost Strus in free agency on a sign-and-trade. But with cap limitations, they'd probably have to look for a reclamation project or two on vet minimums and/or promote a couple of their young two-way guys and hope those developmental players can blossom like Vincent and Strus did.

I love my Cavs and like our offseason, but hedging our bets on Damian Jones as our backup big doesn't sit well with me. The way we looked last year when Allen or Mobley was off the floor was disheartening, and they played too many minutes in the regular season. We badly need a true combo big or at least a quality backup Center.
Dana Gauruder
1:22
With the current roster configuration, they may have to play small ball more often to keep down the minutes of Mobley/Allen. Beyond Jones, they have Niang -- I assume they're looking at him as a backup PF -- and Wade. I agree not the most imposing group of backup bigs but by adding Strus and re-signing LeVert, seems to me they'll be playing a lot of small lineups.

Best guess on when LeBron finally hangs it up. Not that he shouldn't still be playing. Just curious.
Dana Gauruder
1:23
I don't know how he'd give up the possibility of playing with his son. The grind of staying in top shape all these years and the minutes he played finally seem to be taking a toll. But it certainly would be cool to see them playing alongside each other for at least one season.

Are any teams linked to the Eraser ?
Dana Gauruder
1:26
Really haven't heard anything on Noel since that 10-day with the Nets late last season. Don't think he's signed with an overseas team. Considering there are still some vet free agent big men looking for jobs -- as we discussed earlier with Wood -- I doubt he'll get anything soon.

Based on what you saw of Victor Wembenyama in the Summer League, is it realistic for Spurs fans  to expect the team to make the play-in tournament this season?
Dana Gauruder
1:30
I'm sure ESPN/TNT certainly would love to see the Spurs in the postseason hunt. He's going to be terrific -- a force from Day 1 -- and the Spurs will improve. But they were horrid defensively last year and as good as VW is already and will be in the future, I don't think those issues are magically solved. But the Spurs fans certainly have a reason to watch again -- it's going to be fun to see just how good he'll be in his rookie campaign.

Any teams linked to our league's Cult Hero Boban Marjanovic ?
Dana Gauruder

Haven't heard any buzz regarding a team signing Boban. I hope he does. He's good for the league and fun to watch in the games he gets to play.

Why would the Clippers possibly think Harden makes them a title contender?
Dana Gauruder
1:35
For the same reason Houston and Brooklyn and Philly wanted him. He's still an offensive force, capable of putting up 40 points at any time, as he did twice vs. Boston. And he's also capable of disappearing at the worst time, as he did in the last 2 or 3 games of that series. It's easy to be seduced by his talent.

What are the chances of the warriors getting a real center with their last open spot that they are willing to use?
Dana Gauruder
1:38
Willing to use? Not sure. I mean, he'll be the last guy they add the roster. But Dunleavy has indicated they're looking for a big man to fill that spot, so they are aware that the current roster is undersized. They were more concerned with getting Saric first than signing a vet center. So now they can focused their attention on that spot.

Who can the Mavs target still in FA since Thybulle was retained in Portland? Or are they still a surprise trade team before the season starts?
Dana Gauruder
1:43
I don't think they're going to make any major moves. However, I don't think they're done looking for more bench help. There really aren't a lot of desirable free agents out there -- Grant Williams was their biggest move this offseason, other than re-signing Kyrie. I could see Hardaway been moved at some point, though they may have to wait until the season starts before that happens.

Help us understand the Celtics logic behind essentially Trading, , Smart and Grant Williams for Porziņģis, and a bunch of second round picks. Is it a style of play change or something because it seems to be a net negative on the surface??
Dana Gauruder
1:47
They were originally going to deal Brogdon as part of that Porzingis and then the Clippers balked because of health concerns. They were intent on getting another major impact player, a versatile offensive big in his prime with size. Porzingis has had his share of injuries but this move signals that there are concerns about Williams' knees and whether he can stay on the court for long stretches. To me, it just seemed as the Celtics wanted to do something bold, rather than just running the same group out there again. It was also an endorsement of Derrick White -- he was solid in the postseason and they're committed to giving him a bigger role.

Any Kevin Knox rumours drafted 9th a few years ago someone should like him any lesser name FA moves?
Dana Gauruder
1:50
I think he'll get a vet's minimum somewhere. Too young to give up on just yet and as your 14th or 15th man on the roster, he can step in and give you some good minutes off the bench when needed.

Why is Lillard so opposed to going to Boston? With Tatum, Brown, Lillard, and Porzingis they would easily be favorites for the championship.
Dana Gauruder
1:54
For one, Miami's a whole lot nicer place to live than Boston in the winter. I just think he'd fit that Miami "culture" so well, plus he'd continue to be the primary scorer with the Heat. I don't know if he'd be a great fit in Boston with those other scoring options.

O/U 40 games played for DRose this year?

He get some minutes before Ja returns. After that, I doubt he'll play that much. I'd say under.

Can the Mavs still acquire Capela from the Hawks? If not are there any free agents that can help out this season? Thanks
Dana Gauruder
1:58
The Hawks already traded away Collins. I don't see how they could remove Capela from the equation unless they get a starting-level center in return. If they're giving Murray an extension, all indications is that they want to be a serious contender. So it's doubtful, unless it turns into a three-team trade in which Atlanta gets another center to replace him.

Do You Think The wizards will win 35 games this season?
Dana Gauruder

I think you can divide that in half -- I'll give them 17 or 18 wins and a big lottery ticket.

Is James Bouknight still in the Hornets plans or would a trade benefit both him and the team?
Dana Gauruder

I believe he's on their Summer League roster and trying to expand his game. He's been a major disappointment but I don't know if there's much of a market for him.
