ARTHUR HILL
12:01
Welcome to this week's chat. We'll start with a question about the Kings.
KJ
12:01
As of today who is currently the best team in California?  Dare I say Sacramento?  I mean realistically between DeMar, Fox, Monk, and Sabonis all 4 can legitimately get you 20 on any night
ARTHUR HILL
12:04
The Kings have enjoyed the best offseason of any of the California teams. Re-signing Malik Monk was a huge win, and the DeRozan trade puts them into the conversation among Western Conference contenders. The Lakers didn't improve, the Warriors lost Klay and the Clippers may be much worse without Paul George. Sacramento might now be the best team in the state.

Where do you see the 76ers at in the east? Did the moves they make vault them to the top?
ARTHUR HILL
12:07
To me, the addition of Paul George puts them on a level with New York as the teams in best position to challenge the Celtics. Beyond their talents, George, Embiid and Maxey have complementary skills that should work well together. Philadelphia is one of the clear winners of the offseason.

The nuggets seem to falling down the standings in the west. Losing players  2 years in a row without much replacement. Do you think they are contenters or pretenders?
ARTHUR HILL
12:12
They're in danger of slipping out of the top four in the West. It's hard to overstate how much Caldwell-Pope meant to that starting lineup with his ability as a perimeter defender and a three-point shooter. The Nuggets have lost too many key pieces from their championship team, and I'm not convinced that adding Russell Westbrook would be enough to keep them in contention.

With money being dried up, do you think Trent will take a 1 year deal and try again? Where will he end up?
ARTHUR HILL
12:15
This summer is a reminder that free agents need to get their deals in place early. Trent will keep looking for MLE offers, but it's conceivable that he'll sign a short-term deal and stay with the Raptors, where he at least has a defined role.
KJ
12:15
I know it's super early but based on the projected rotation and estimated starts, who do you think wins rookie of the Year? I'm going to say Zach. I was going to say castle but if they are going to play him at point he's not going to start until next year when they trade Chris Paul. Zach on the other hand I believe should be a starter from day one. Thoughts?
ARTHUR HILL
12:18
Risacher should get an immediate opportunity to produce in Atlanta, which gives him a head start over most of this year's rookie class. Even among the top 10 picks, there aren't many players in this draft class likely to put up impressive stats, so Zach looks like the early ROY favorite.
Troell
12:18
Do the Sixers bring back Marcus Morris and Pat Bev along with adding Marfkieff to sure up this rotation?
ARTHUR HILL
12:21
Philadelphia should be an attractive spot for a lot of veterans who are hoping to win a ring before they retire. Team needs will factor into the decision, but all three names you mentioned are the type of players the Sixers will be looking for.

Do you think Lamelo is a trade option for teams? Keep hearing his name popping up in scenarios. I know their FO said they don’t intend to shop him, but what they say is rarely the truth. If so what would his value be, he was a better rook than Ant and an 20yo all star who still has a sky high ceiling. But his injuries are a big issue. Hard to imagine what he might be worth.
ARTHUR HILL
12:23
Injury problems have depressed LaMelo's trade value, so this isn't the time to move him. The Hornets need to be patient and see if he can stay healthy for a full season and assess how he fits in with the rest of the young core. If it doesn't work out, they can consider a trade in February or next summer.

Looking at the way Houston are holding off on extending Green and Sengun. Are you expecting them to be aggressive if a top 10-15 player comes available? I can’t imagine a better offer from anyone that could beat, one of Green/Sengun along with one or two of Smith/Eason/Whitmore/Amen PLUS multiple picks.
ARTHUR HILL
12:28
I think that's exactly the Rockets' strategy, and acquiring the Suns' picks from Brooklyn gives them more assets to pursue it. In addition, this is the last guaranteed year for Fred VanVleet's contract, so they'll have the option to be aggressive next summer on the free agent market if Green and Sengun don't have extensions in place.

I know it's early, and the Wizards have 4 years with their 3 1st round picks.I was just curious if having that many 1st round picks in a year can be harmful,or a good thing in the long run?I'm just looking ahead at the financial issues that might arise
ARTHUR HILL
12:31
For a team like the Wizards, it's best to amass as much young talent as they can, and then worry about financial issues later on. This year was a good first step, and they should prioritize draft assets and any young players they can get when they ultimately trade Kyle Kuzma.
Keith
12:32
Shocked that the owners of the Celtics put them up for sale right after winning the championship!
ARTHUR HILL
12:34
This may be the best time to sell, considering the team's long-term financial commitments. The new owner will eventually have to either pay a record tax bill or trade away part of the nucleus of the championship team. Wyc Grousbeck gets to leave as a hero.

Do you see the Nets moving cam Johnson, dfs, or Dennis Schroder? Where do you think is a potential landing spots for them
ARTHUR HILL
12:38
All three seem to be on the market, and they'll probably all be moved sometime before the deadline. It's just a matter of finding the best price. It's pretty clear that the Nets plan to rebuild through the draft now that they have their first-rounders back for the next two years, so Johnson, Finney-Smith and Schroder aren't in their long-term plans.

Any word as to whether or not Brogdon stays with Washington? Could be a homecoming for the UVA alumni.
ARTHUR HILL
12:40
He didn't seem likely to stay in Portland after the Blazers acquired him last summer, but he remained there all season. He's a good veteran to have around to guide the young roster. He makes more sense on a contender, but I can see why the Wizards might not be in a hurry to trade him.

12:41
Pels planning to play a lot of small ball this year?  Or will they try to ship off BI for some size up front?
ARTHUR HILL
12:44
Trading Ingram is probably the next step, but teams have been reluctant to give up many assets for a player who's a year away from free agency and will demand a big contract next summer. The Pelicans signaled their intentions to be contenders with the Dejounte Murray trade, so I don't think they'll be content with Daniel Theis as their starting center. Another move or two is coming.
Arcman
12:44
So do all the moves the warriors made so far make them better or the same? Looks like the defense will be so much better than last year which is why they didn't move up into the playoffs.
ARTHUR HILL
12:48
The Warriors concentrated on defense with their offseason moves, and they should be improved on that end of the court. They weren't able to add another star like Paul George or DeMar DeRozan, so they'll have to count on their young players to assume more responsibility around Steph and Draymond. A bounce-back year from Andrew Wiggins would also help. I would say they're about the same, with a chance to be better.

Talk Bulls.... Zach Lavine, Vuc? Are they gone?  Is the tank on?
ARTHUR HILL
12:54
Their willingness to part with DeMar DeRozan for a modest return confirms that the tank is on. They may give up the two second-rounders they got in that deal to convince someone to take LaVine, although it's hard to see which team would be willing to gamble on him. Vucevic is likely available, too. The Bulls finally recognized that they had a limited ceiling with last year's roster, and they opted to rebuild rather than string together more play-in appearances.

12:54
Knicks losing Hartenstein hurts... what backup center options make sense now?
ARTHUR HILL
12:55
There aren't many good options considering the Knicks' financial situation. Re-signing Precious Achiuwa is probably their best one.
Raps
12:55
What's next for TO?  Trade coming or wait until the season starts and see how competitive they can be?
ARTHUR HILL
12:57
Other than a possible sign-and-trade involving Trent, I think the Raptors are content with the roster they have in place. Injuries kept them from getting a real look at the Barnes-Barrett-Quickley trio last season. They'll take some time to see how they all fit together.

Could the Cavs realistically net Jerami Grant in a three-team for Darius Garland? Garland to the Jazz, John Collins and two Cavs firsts to the Blazers, Grant to the Cavs, for example? They have two-guards in abundance and Mitchell has shown he can play PG effectively.
ARTHUR HILL
12:59
I don't think that's enough of a return for Garland. The Cavs could find better offers if they start shopping him, but I believe he and Mitchell will be together for at least one more season.

Pels have Orlando’s Wendell Carter on their radar
ARTHUR HILL

Carter would be a good fit for the current roster if they can get him at a decent price. They don't need a star center, just someone on that level.

Why doesn't Sam Presti want me?
