In your opinion, will Geno ever get himself into the conversation for a Selke? There are lapses, but when he's on, he can be a defensive beast: knocking people off the puck, disrupting passing lanes, etc.
Jason Mackey
5:20
I like Geno for the reasons you mentioned, but there's not enough consistency there for me. He also stinks on faceoffs. Malkin is a great player, but his defensive game isn't in the same solar system as Patrice Bergeron's.
Joe
5:20
Jason, our bottom 6 is brutal. We won't get much offensively from them. Please tell me JR and Sully see how bad they are and back at trying to find an offensively gifted 3C so we run at least three strong scoring lines.
Jason Mackey
5:21
I think they're going to wait and see. I get that. It's a long season. Let's see if they can fail at something before telling them they're going to. It's a long season. I'm OK with affording the opportunity for that to play out.
Joe
5:21
I know AA hasn't signed in Detroit and they were waiting on that to trade for Sheahan. Do you think they have or should move on and try to trade with some other teams? What about Vegas? They have a lot of centers, like Haula who I see playing wing for them
Jason Mackey
5:22
I can't say whether they've talked to Vegas or Haula or not. I wouldn't rule it out. My feel on this is that GMJR has talked to a lot of teams about a lot of players. As for Sheahan, you can only wait around so long, right? I don't think they're closing the door at this point, but I couldn't imagine they're terribly hopeful either.

Sid:do you think  other players   are as assiduous in attention to signing autographs as you have been?
Jason Mackey
5:23
First time assiduous has been used in one of these chats, I know that. ... Sid, I'll let you answer this one.

What do you think the plan is for keeping the guys fresh?  2 long off seasons has to take a toll at some point
Jason Mackey
5:23
As much as I can gather, they're not going to rest guys just for the sake of resting them. The Penguins monitor the heck out of this stuff with their sports performance staff. That's one. They will ease off some practices and morning skates. That's fairly expected. There's not much else they can do, though.

What do you think of Joe Colborne on waivers?
Jason Mackey
5:26
I see the intrigue there, but man, if the guy couldn't crack the lineup on the worst team in the NHL -- by a long shot -- do we realistically think he's going to contribute to the two-time Stanley Cup winners? Pass. They can do better, especially for $2.5 million.

Hi Jason,  I'm so glad the Pens are back in action.  What do you think Greg Mckegg showed in camp that Jay McClement didn't ?  I would've bet on Mclement earning that third line center spot. Based on his experience on the PK and on face offs, Mclement seemed like a more reasonable facsimile to Matt Cullen.
Jason Mackey
5:27
Hey Phil. Me too. One word answer here: speed. McKegg has it. McClement does not. That was the difference. You're right in everything else -- faceoffs, PK stuff, etc. But here, speed plays. They feel they can live with everything else -- at least for now -- with McKegg. I agree with them. McClement didn't fit.

Not trying to be a jerk with this question, but with the season beginning to start, why do the media -- not just you specifically and the PG -- like to quote Malkin phonetically, making an interview with him read like one with Ivan Drago? Obviously it's not the same thing, but some of the the things writers did during Clemente's time here now are cringe-worthy? And hearing some athletes speak on TV and then read how they are quoted in articles, you can tell they have been cleaned up a bit.
Jason Mackey
5:28
I can only speak for myself, but I always clean Malkin's English up a bit. I think he deserves it -- my Russian would suck, trust me -- and it reads better. So, in a sense, I don't know what you're talking about.

5:28
Now just a basic hockey question: with Pouliot gone, what do you think the chip(s) will be if they need to get a 3C?
Jason Mackey
5:29
Hard to say. It depends on at which store they're shopping. Riley Sheahan? Would think picks would work. Maybe a young winger. If they're going bigger ... it just depends on how big and for whom.
Dave
5:29
Thanks for doing this chat Jason. Enough thanks cannot be heaped upon JR for putting pens fans out of their misery by sending Pouliet on his way! Now, what are the chances of packaging Maatta for a decent center?
Jason Mackey
5:30
Not good, I don't think. It would be really strange to trade a top-four defenseman who has looked really good at this point for a third-line center.
GMJR
5:30
Mackey, Operation Pouliot is off. Thanks for all your help.
Jason Mackey
5:47
Anytime, Jim.
Pat
5:47
Hey Jason. I don't know if you heard/saw, but the Avalanche put Joe Colborne on waivers today. Do you think there is a chance that the Pens claim him..? Or should they claim him? He had a down year last year, but in previous years he has put up points and has proven that he is capable. Only has a year left so not the biggest risk? What do you think?
Jason Mackey
5:47
I did see that. I don't think they should. Outlined it above, but he makes $2.5 million -- too much -- and if he couldn't cut it on the worst team in the league, what makes us think he'll produce on its best? I think they can do better.
Dave
5:48
The Staal rumor still baffles me... Friedman mentioned they checked in on him, but how would they have fit him under the cap?
Jason Mackey
5:49
All they did was check. One, he isn't available. Two, you're right. That's a lot of money. But do they know Carolina isn't willing to take money back if they don't at least ask? Due diligence. The Penguins do a lot of it.
Ron
5:49
Do you feel like the Penguins don't want to give up anyone from their roster to get a 3C, or do you think they'd be willing to part with a winger to get the 3C? I feel like the Penguins would have an easier time finding a good 3C if they'd be willing to include a winger, which they seem to have internal replacements for.
Jason Mackey
5:49
I think they would be OK parting with someone like Wilson or Kuhnhackl if they felt the return was worth it. Definitely not Guentzel or Rust. Sheary would be a maybe, in my opinion.
Pat
5:50
Hey Jason. I don't know if you heard/saw, but the Avalanche placed Colborne on waivers. Do you think the Pens will or should claim him? He had a down year last season, but has proven that he's capable of putting up points and he only has a year left on his deal!
Jason Mackey
5:50
I do not. Got this one twice. No way.
John
5:50
Jason, the pens 3rd line combined for 9 goals in the NHL last year, that isn't good, why isn't Sprong with the pens playing on that 3rd line right now?  Kuhnhackl is a 4th liner at best.
Jason Mackey
5:51
Because you want to use your top prospects out of want, not need. Look at the Blues. They're being forced to play a bunch of young guys because of injuries. The best thing for Sprong's development is for him to get some time in the AHL and refine certain aspects of his game. Would he help offensively? Maybe. But it's no guarantee. And they're trying to not cut corners with his development.
Mike
5:51
Had he been healthy, do you think Mario could've played for as long as Jagr has? Into his mid-40s, I mean.
Jason Mackey
5:52
That's hard to say. Mario has done so much good in our community. Who's to say he wouldn't, as Chuck Noll said, have wanted to get on with his life's work? Just too tough and too theoretical.
Pat
5:52
Do you think the Pens will/should claim Colborne from the Avs? Can he be the new 3C?
Jason Mackey
5:52
No, I don't think they should. I think they can do better.
Ctrl+F McKegg
5:52
Has anyone contacted the penguins about acquiring a 3rd line center from us?
Jason Mackey
5:52
There have been talks both ways. You looking to get out already, Greg?
Steven
5:53
Brutal honesty: there's no way they're going to win a 3rd straight with McKegg in the lineup every night, right? Just seems like common sense.
Jason Mackey
5:53
I can't disagree with that. I think they need to upgrade that position at some point, and I think they will. I can understand waiting on it, though.
