Steve Adams
3:09
Hello world. We have a chat. About baseball. And other things. If you like. Maybe I'll type this way. All chat.
Probably not.
Feel free to start asking questions and I'll get underway in a minute or so.
Nats
3:10
Jenmar gomez claim him? Also roark to DL with phantom injury possibility?
Steve Adams
3:11
I doubt anyone claims him with his salary. He'll get released and sign elsewhere... maybe traded someone with a bunch of cash to offset the salary, though I imagine the Phils at least asked around already to see if anyone wanted to take him off their hands.
3:12
Nats are a reasonable guess for any released reliever -- Twins, Brewers as well. Gomez is missing more bats this season... he's just giving up an unfathomable amount of HRs as well
Jon Daniels
3:12
What can I get back for Darvish, say if we sell? Use the Cubs or dodgers for example? Happ doesn't seem like he will be traded
Steve Adams
3:13
Jeff Passan reported yesterday that the Rangers have no plans to trade Darvish even if they're not in contention... keeping him in TX would have to at least somewhat improve their odds of re-signing him
Matt
3:14
When do we expect to hear more news about international prospects signing?
Steve Adams
3:14
There are already lists out there from MLB.com and Baseball America with scouting reports and expected destinations for the top prospects on this year's class. We've linked to them numerous times in the past. Actual signing/bonus news will all be an avalanche on the morning of July 2.

3:15
Should the Angels trade Maybin or extend him?
Steve Adams
3:15
Given the state of their farm, I'd move him if they're getting any kind of decent return. Kind of dicey to sign a player with that type of injury history to (another) long-term deal anyhow
Sox Hopefull
3:16
Would a team ever deal 2 arms from the pen to one contender or does that diminish value? Thinking Robertson & ether Kanle or Swarzak from the WS could fetch a great return. Don't recall any moves like this in the past.
Steve Adams
3:17
Rick Hahn (or any GM) would be open to that type of scenario, yeah, but it varies on a case to case basis. It's not entirely different from what the Brewers and Phillies did in trading Lucroy and Hamels... Jeremy Jeffress and Jake Diekman weren't the main components of those trades, but they certainly enhanced the prospect return.

3:17
Do I trade Schwarber for a starter?
Steve Adams
3:18
Cubs aren't trading Schwarber -- especially not with his value at a low point.
Marine Layer
3:18
If Leonys Martin stays in AAA all year, how does that impact his arbitration?
Steve Adams
3:19
He's not accruing any MLB service time, so he'd be arbitration eligible once again this offseason. And, if he doesn't get to five years of service, he'd technically be controllable for another extra season
3:20
Actually, he's off the 40-man roster anyhow -- not sure where my brain was at there. He'll have the opportunity to elect free agency at season's end, in that case, which he assuredly will. And, if he makes his way back onto a 40-man, the previous service time implications I laid out would be the same

Since it seems less and less likely that the Reds trade Cozart due to lack of a market, is there any greater chance that they keep him beyond this year?
Steve Adams
3:22
I think they'll still find a taker for him this season. Injuries to contenders' shortstops could create opportunities, and Cozart is such a good defender at short that he could push a team's SS to third or second base

3:23
What would it take for the twins to aquire me from the phils?
Steve Adams
3:24
Not much -- probably some prospect from the back-end of their top 30. He's a rental with a not-entirely insignificant salary that was acquired as an offseason salary dump. I'm not saying he doesn't have value, but he's not going to fetch any type of top-tier prospect.

Any chance Justin Upton opts out after this season?
Steve Adams
3:27
.266/.351/.494 and on pace for about 30 homers... there's a chance, yeah. Recent market for sluggers has to be concerning for him, but he knows he can't be hit with a qualifying offer, and if he maintains this pace he'd have top top 4/88. Probably needs a big finish, but he's going to be 30 when he hits the open market, and beating that sum isn't unthinkable if he keeps this up

Cozart to Balt ??
Steve Adams
3:28
One reasonable option, though he's on the DL himself at the moment. But, yeah, he'd be an upgrade over Hardy
Blaine
3:28
Trade Cody Bellinger or just enjoy the ride?
Steve Adams
3:28
I don't know if you're talking about fantasy baseball or actually asking for the Dodgers, but either way, hard no on trading him
Jack

Is Houston the likely landing spot for Sonny Gray? What would the cost be for the Stros?
Steve Adams
3:30
I don't know that there's one "likely" landing spot at this point, but they'll obviously be involved in talks. I can see about nine plausible landing spots for him -- I'm working on something for the site on that very subject right now, which will probably be up tomorrow (or mayyyybe later tonight. But probably tomorrow)

Hi Steve:  Excluding Posey, Crawford, MadBum, Slater and Panik, does anyone on the current roster have real trade value?
Steve Adams
3:32
Nunez will bring something useful back. Cueto is tough to read because of his opt-out, but someone will give up some type of prospect haul for him (less than what KC sent to CIN for him), I'd have to imagine, even with the downside the opt-out carries.

I'd say they could shop Brandon Belt around as well, though he's not having his best season at the plate right now. Could get someone fringe-y for Nick Hundley, and they have some decent relievers they could market, such as Kontos, Strickland
3:33
Send Strickland to the Nats! (I kid)
Andrew
3:33
Brewers make a surprise buying move at the deadline (maybe a starter with a couple more years of control), or do they stick to the plan despite being in first?
Steve Adams
3:34
They're one of the weird teams I'm wondering about in connection with someone like Sonny Gray. I doubt Milwaukee was expecting to be in this spot in 2017, and I don't think they're going to mortgage the future for rentals, but adding someone with a few years left before free agency doesn't necessarily fly in the face of the rebuild.

3:35
Barring injury, there's no chance the Rays DON'T trade Alex Cobb, right? Far too many capable replacements in the organization to let Cobb hit free agency and get nothing for him
Steve Adams
3:35
Yeah I think he's getting traded even if the Rays are in contention. Still have Snell and De Leon in the minors, plus Andriese coming back. Faria has looked real good thus far.

Possible destinations for Brad Hand? What kind of trade value do you think he has?
Steve Adams
3:38
Virtually any contender or fringe contender makes sense as a speculative landing spot. I don't think he has the type of value that most Padres fans in our comment section seem to think, but at least one really well regarded prospect and another middle-tier type is plausible. I don't love saying "Player A is worth X" because it's so subjective, but the notion that he's going to bring back a pair of guys that are top 50-ish prospects or bring something close to the Andrew Miller return isn't realistic to me.
