Hi everyone!  Sorry for the late start on the Marlins chat....the Bruce Bochy news pushed things back a bit.

Let's talk some Marlins!

Given where they currently are on the win curve, do you think the Marlins bring in a closer / late inning arm from outside the org?  Does Floro start the year as closer?  He had a ton of trouble missing bats after he came back from injury last year, but looked more like himself as the season wore on.
Mark P
1:48
I suspect they stick with Floro. He was their plan as closer going into last season before he got hurt, and as you noted, it took him until late in the season to really get healthy and get on track.  That strong finish probably makes the Marlins feel pretty good about penciling him in as closer

Are the Marlins likely to explore trades involving any of their starting pitchers not named Sandy Alcantara?
Mark P
1:50
Top prospect Eury Perez is also reportedly on the "will not trade" list, along with Alcantara.  But for everyone else, Miami will at least listen
Christian Yelich
1:50
Can they trade for him in a bad contract swap with Avisail Garcia???
Mark P
1:51
As funny as this idea would be, Yelich has a no-trade clause, and I doubt he'd be too open to a deal back to Miami.  (Not that he has anything against the team, but it's just that they're not exactly lined up to contend.)

Beyond that, Yelich is a whole lot more expensive than Garcia

Do we think Espada and Quatroro are the final 2 managerial candidates? Personally hoping for Espada
Mark P
1:53
They've been keeping this search pretty quiet, as it's a little surprising that they're already in the "second interview" stage.  Given the secrecy, we shouldn't assume Quatraro and Espada are the only finalists, or that things have even reached a finalist stage

WILL YOU MAKE A RUN AT TREA TURNER?
Mark P
1:54
Me, personally?  No.
The Marlins?  Also no.

Is Elieser Hernandez not a non-tender candidate?
Mark P
1:55
He had a rough season, but I think the Marlins will explore trade options, and quite possibly find an interested taker before considering a non-tender.  Hernandez isn't very expensive, if they do end up retaining him.
1:56
Teams are always on the lookout for pitching, and Hernandez might have a good deal of bounce-back potential
Chris

Marlins seem to have struck gold in pitching development but can't buy a decent bat. What gives? They've had a great deal of success with position players in the past
Mark P
1:57
It's a question that I'm sure the Marlins have asked themselves time and again in recent years.  Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald recently had a comprehensive (and if you're a Fish fan, kind of grim) breakdown of just how many highly-touted prospects and position players have seemed to stall out in the farm system, or when they hit the MLB level

can their "speed and contact" strategy actually work? outside of the 2015 royals can't think of a team in the modern era having much success built that way

The Guardians, just this season

Lifelong Marlins fan here... Trying to stay optimistic for next season, but it's tough. Any scenario you can think of that results in Miami making the playoffs, other than significant injuries to the rest of the NL East?
Mark P

Their young pitchers stay healthy and all excel, Garcia/Soler have bounce-back years, Chisholm stays healthy and posts his 2022 numbers over a full season, Cooper stays healthy and hits well, a couple of the younger guys like Bleday or De La Cruz break out
2:01
It's a lot of ifs, to be sure, but it's not like the Marlins are untalented.  A few breaks go their way, and maybe one of the NL East powers had some bad luck, and who knows

The Marlins talked to the Angels about Brandon Marsh but the deal didn't go anywhere. Could they now ask about Jo Adell?
Mark P
2:02
Oh come on, I can't even avoid Jo Adell trade questions in these team-specific chats?!?!

Miami has the pitching to get the Angels' attention, but it's probable that in moving Marsh, LAA will be hanging onto Adell.  It would be an unusual pivot to see the Angels deal both highly-touted outfield prospects in rapid succession.
Pablo Lopez
2:03
Pablo Lopez for a package centered around Lux, which side says no???
Mark P
2:04
This would be an interesting move.  The Dodgers are likelier to say no, especially if Trea Turner leaves and Lux is now needed to play shortstop.  Of course, the Dodgers could conceivably deal Lux and sign one of the big FA shortstops....

Thoughts on Chisholm moving forward?
Mark P

A ton of talent, I hope he can stay healthy.

Would Charlie Montoyo be a fit in Miami? Seems he got a raw deal in Toronto.
Mark P
2:07
There were some whispers that Montoyo had lost the clubhouse in Toronto, and that may not be a new team would want in giving Montoyo a second job so quickly.

In general, however, Montoyo isn't a bad fit.  He has experience in helping get a young team on track.
Kahlil Watson
2:08
What’s next for me? Am I out? A trade? A second/third chance?
Mark P
2:09
I've speculated before that Watson might be a trade chip just because the Marlins probably didn't ever have him in their plans, not expecting he'd fall so far in the draft.  A team might see such a player as a steal, or maybe as an asset to be flipped for a win-now veteran

Is Miguel Rojas's gold glove defense enough of a reason to keep his terrible bat in the lineup?
Mark P
2:11
If Miami can add some more hitters, Rojas' defense can certainly play in an everyday lineup.  And to be fair, Rojas was also playing hurt for much of the year. He's never been a big hitter, but if he can at least get closer to average (in the 90-95 wRC+ range), that's good enough for a player with an excellent glove
Lopez
2:11
Lopez was rumored to be available at the trade deadline. Will he get moved this offseason and to who.
Mark P
2:13
Lopez is available, yet I'd suspect he's one of the pitchers Miami would least like to move.  Not a hot take or anything, but at least with Lopez, the Fish know what they're getting in 2023, whereas any of the Luzardo, Rogers, Cabrera, Garrett bunch have more question marks
So while the Marlins will listen on Lopez, it will take a big offer to get them to budge.  On the other hand, if Miami wants to get a difference-maker kind of bat in the lineup, Lopez might be the price tag

Sandy Alcantara, Max Meyer and Sixto Sanchez for Julio Rodriguez - who says no?
Mark P
2:14
The Mariners hang up the phone, and throw the phone out the window.

What happens with Brian Anderson?
Mark P
2:16
He's another player who will be shopped before the non-tender deadline, but I'm leaning towards Anderson not getting tendered.
